If this has been polled before, my apologies, I didn't see anything.

A very simple question, but I'm curious to see the responses.

Do you play fantasy football for:

1) The winnings and/or bragging rights

or...

2) The pure excitement it adds to the NFL season/off-season

or...

3) Another entirely different reason? Maybe the love of competition? Fun among friends? Feel free to expand.

My answer surprised me, because as much as I love the excitement it adds to watching nearly every football game (either to root for my players, or against my opponents), I wouldn't be as interested if some sort of winnings weren't on the line.

The competition and the thrill of winning it all. It seems like so many other people are always concerned about nothing but winning the money, and don't get me wrong, the money is nice, but money comes and goes. If you win it all, that gives you bragging rights for a year, and that is much more fun and rewarding than a wad of cash (which will be gone in a lot shorter time span than a year).

I voted other. I play mostly free or low stakes games so it's not the money. I find it more easy to enjoy a game when I don't have to wonder how my players are doing on the other games. My view is FF started as a way for friends to gather together and determine who could be a better GM. Evaluating talent, drafting properly, making key trades, not to mention another angle on football to discuss with their friends.

Other - I enjoy the analytics in the offseason.

Other - Builds comradery and commonality amongs friends that you would have otherwise fallen out of touch with

Other - Competition

Other.

I like the challenge more than anything. The 12 team dynasty league I'm in has some of the most skilled owners I've ever played with. I used to play in 3 other leagues with alot of morons won some cash frequently, I quit them all to focus on this dynasty league. Its a freebie league, but I really enjoy the challenge with these owners skill levels. I've never finished above 6th place in 7 years and yet despite my lack of success I love it. I guess thats what makes me tick and how I'm wired. I personnally get no thrill or rush from gambling or winning money.

i love games
 It's just fun. And I don't have any more fun when I win than when I lose. We're still gonna swap jokes and insults on the message board all season and drink beer on auction day, no matter what anyone's record is. And, yes, I do play for money.

That sums it up for me pretty much as well. One of my leagues I first started and still run primarily to keep in touch with some others. I also just enjoy playing. I enjoy the activities of scouring waivers and looking for good values, of negotiating trades, etc.

 Me too!
:lmao: It's all about maintaining friendships. I wouldn't get involved with a league unless I knew more than a few team owners.

Damn, well let me first apologize for not including nearly enough choices on the poll. Some very good 'other' responses here.

Nothing thrills me more about FF than building a team together based on my own research and feelings, building it up through the season and the off-season, and throwing it out there in some good competition. That alone makes this the single most addicting thing I've ever competed in. For me personally, it all changes a bit if there's nothing more than bragging rights at stake. Maybe I have issues.

I've got to think it's that, as we get older, we just don't have the opportunities to play sports as much as when we were younger so this is a main outlet for us.

Also, when you played when you were young, just because you had more desire than most didn't mean you had the talent. Here, desire is everything. Even if you're not winning in this "game", the thrill of the competition (winning games, winning in trades, etc.) is all.

I really love football... it's not so much that FF adds excitement to the season, it does. But part of it, is really that it's an intellectual exercise for me.

Started as just a fun thing to do with my friends. Had NO IDEA what I was in for.

I know the reason I stay with it:

Makes crappy games worth watching.

When I was in high school, I could watch any pro game, and get really into it. Now, if I don't have players going, and it's two bad teams, I'm as likely to lose interest. With multiple leagues, you always have something happening.

My oldest league is with my cousins and uncles. My other money league I run and it's all friends from college. I do them to have something to stay in touch with basically.

is it bragging that any time my brother(we've been in same league for years) comes over i genuflect( :lmao: ) in front of my fantasy football trophy from 06' (that i beat him in title game for). thinking of adding a 2nd spot light to it. nothing in my house holds more value, lol

moments like that is what i play for

little did I know that 14 years ago when I walked in the computer room and the operator said, "hey we are starting a fantasy football league, you want in?" when I said yes it would turn into this year long obession.

back then it was manually scored from the usa today, lineups had to be turned in on Friday before we left work.

Im a complusive NFL football addict. even before FFL I would watch every single minute of ever single game I could.

there are many reasons people love fantasy football, but i think one of the largest reasons for fantasy football's popularity is the chance it gives men to bond with each other (forgive me for how lame that sounds).

unlike women, we don't call each other up and talk just to talk.

i refer to fantasy football as the replacement for hunting for millions of guys. it keeps us in touch with people that we may stop keeping in touch with.

i see fantasy football as more of a social event (i know it's heresy to say, but i think fantasy baseball and basketball are better pure fantasy games)

our leagues message board, it's just a great time, all 12 members are all close friends, and we just let loose on each other, nothing is held back, we all know everything about each other and people get grimey, and it's hysterical...god help you on there if you don't know your football

 Me too!
 Me too. Also my sons are in everything and invite me, I love that.

I was a gambler and when I quit, non important games didn't interest me. FFB brought me closer to me kids and replaced the gambling forever.

I don't really care about the money (I play in fewer and fewer money leagues, even though I could probably afford more than when I first started) and I've already won a fair amount (and lost a lot more, of course) so that isn't the main reason I play.

Like others said, it's the camaraderie. Seeing your friends, getting together, having something social to enjoy. As we get older, there's less and less free time available. It's silly to waste it just sitting around making small talk or being bored. With fantasy football there's competition, humor and something to rally around. Sometimes it's easy to find excuses to not make time for your friends, but with ff there's a compelling reason to show up and make time. Maybe I'm just getting old, but that's worth a lot more than the money you win.

it's all about the winnings for me.

truth be told, FF kind of ruined the pure enjoyment i previously had while watching a game. I had teams I always kind of rooted for and teams i rooted against. I would watch the games to see who would win.

now because of FF, i don't root any particular way except for my players to do well. The actual winners of each game (except for my favorite team) are more meaningless compared to pre-FF

It would only be appropriate to put this into a draft format....

1.01

1.02 Love of

1.03 Comraderie

1.04 Acting like a GM

1.05 Interest in every game (SOD)

The game livens up the workplace where we have a dynasty league. We play for bragging rights and trash talk. Have found it adds interest to games you ordinarily wouldn't care too much about and makes you a better fan.

Initially, there was a guy at work with a league and the trash talk seemed like fun.

After asking the guy (commish) privately and politely though email during the season on forcing his trades through early a week before he vetoed mine because it wouldn't be fair for other teams to have to play the new teams created by my trade because both were stronger and not everyone had to play them like that earlier in the year... I was not invited back.

I formed three leagues that year, family, friends, and work. Another guy formed a league at work. Five years running for all. Freinds league went to keeper format two years ago.

Did my first survivor league two years ago and four this year. Reason: Fun and informative.

Tried NFFC this year. Tried Kelly's Heroes league this year. Both were fun.

Why run 3 leagues and compete in 7 more?

As a player,

6. Winning is fun, prize is an enhancement, but in some leagues, I just donate the prize to make the contest more entertaining. In other leagues, some donate toward the prize, others are free.

NFFC big contest seems like it would be fun, but $100 total points a year is about my budget to have a shot at it. I wish they had a $100 draftmasters that award a spot in the contest.

5. Win or lose is something to laugh about.

4. Commish motivation is I get to be creative and provide this entertainment. Feels good most of the time.

3. Responsive FBG staff, league-mates, and posters.

2. Fun getting together and talking with family, friends, coworkers, and strangers about football and competition.

1. Gain more knowledge about what I am watching during a game. Much more fun in my opinion.

I really want to understand the game much better, and still have a lot to learn.

1. It gives me a reason to watch almost every NFL game and not just games featuring my favorite team, the Steelers, or other key games of interest.

2. It helped me curb what had become a problematic gambling habit. This goes back to point one. I gambled to add to an element of interest in nationally televised games that I had no rooting interest or failed to get me excited.

3. As a backup to have major reason to care if the Steelers suck.
