What is the value of Frank Gore vs San Diego (1 Viewer)

He probably won't do much on the ground, but luckily for Gore owners he's a two way threat, so he could still be a viable (though not exciting) play this weekend.

I may bench him this week, for the first time this season, in favor of Thomas Jones against AZ. Call it a bad feeling...

I'm not excited about it, but I'm starting him as my RB2. It is either Gore or Foster against the Ravens. I'd love to get 90-100 combined yards from Gore. I'm going to need Rudi to pick up the slack.

I would agree with that move. TJ should shred AZ.Back to the original post. Based on where Gore was drafted, you probably have someone better and can safely bench him against a tough SD team. He has value this week, but it is limited. I would rate him around #15 for this week. Not great, but could be alot worse.

So far Gore has run great against weak D's and poorly against tough D's. Against KC and Philly he's averaged about 5 pts and around 15 pts against AX, StL, and Oak. San Diego D will be the toughest matchup he's played so far. I don't see the 9er offense getting going at all against these guys.

I'm tempted to bench Gore this week for Marion Barber III. I really think both of them will end up with about 50 yds rushing but Barber's got a better chance at a TD since he's gotten 'em the last 3 weeks.

So far Gore really seems to break the "always start your studs" rule.

No way I am playing him against SD. They give up like 86 yds per game on the ground and only 1 TD this year. I am playing Morris for him. This is the first year I have only played matchups and I fear the "Always play your studs" theory is in jeopardy. Seems Morris would be the safer play.

To be fair, against Philly he was well on his way to a pretty decent game, before getting knocked out with a rib injury 8 minutes into the 3rd quarter. Especially in PPR leagues where he had 6 receptions + the yardage.Against KC, the 49er's got so far behind so quickly & had such little time of possesion, that Gore didn't have much of a chance. Even so, Gore still had a very respectable 4.64 ypc against KC.

If Marty crawls back into his conservative shell and does not allow San Diego to put the pedal to the metal, this game could remain close, which would of course be in Gore's favor as far as San Frans running game goes. If San Diego jumps ahead, Gore still has value in the passing game.

A bonus is Robinson's poor showing last week & 0 fumbles by Gore.

Don't get me wrong though, if you've got better options play 'em. I'm just saying if he's all you've got, don't be completely despondent.

Isn't that the case for most of the RBs?

No, stud Teir 1 and Tier 2 Rbs still typically still have decent games against tough D's. Sure there's the occassional week where LT2 only gets 17 yards but you always start LT2. You don't worry about the matchup. Even Teir 2 RB's like Rudi and Parker shouldn't leave you second guessing to start a backup RB like Turner, Barber III or Morris vs. a tough D. My point is that I don't think Frank Gore is at this level yet. Mostly due to his crummy team but also due to his injury/fumble history. Vs Philly, he was on track for a good game but he still fumbled and got hurt. You can't ignore that. Vs KC he had good YPC but still only have about 70 yds total and a fumble. KC scored hardly any points before they played the 9ers and they put up 41 pts on em. San Diego is a pretty low scoring team too, but I'm not so sure the game will be close.

To be accurate, SF isn't a crummy team. It's a pretty decent offensive team with an awful defense. SF is ranked in the top 10 in scoring and yards per game. I don't expect SF to fare very well vs. SD. But I do expect Gore to grind out 35 yards on the ground along with 7 receptions and 60 receiving yards. I don't expect a TD from Gore, but he might be a decent #2 RB this week.
