Back to the larger subject, I think a part of the consideration should include how these bad organizations mishandle opportunity when they do get it.
 which is why I voted for my Lions. Draft high, BUST, spend some $ on FAs, BUST, hire a "big-name" coach (sort of), Mooch = BUST, opportunity to fire an incompetent GM and they give him an extension because the owner likes the game being explained to him by the GM. I love my Lions, but they are easily the worst sports franchise. They can't even get over the hump with the best runningback in the history of the game.

where is the love for the worst franchise in sports history----> Tampa Bay D Rays
There's no way TB, in all of their, what...10 seasons?...belongs in this conversation. Also, most of the poll options are terrible. OP must be 12 years old.

Also, I think you have to exclude the Royals. They have made it to the World Series. If you are talking about worst franchises, you have to start with ones that have never made a championship game/series.
Agreed they're not even in this discussion. When Ewing Kaufmann was alive, he literally sunk his own money into building and stocking that team, including the Royals Academy in the Carribbean. It's only since he died that the team has sucked. Basically, the estate taxes put the family in a hole they really haven't gotten out of.

i know its a little early, but so far the texans enough said.
Maybe the worst opening 5 year period in the modern NFL, but way too early for them to be on this type of list. since we are talking all sports, the Texas Rangers should merit some consideration.Edit: Until the last couple of years, the Dallas Mavericks should have been on this list and if they blow another postseason, I might include them for teasing fans.
The Mavericks are killing me a slow and agonizing death.
