What is the worst free agent signing so far this offseason? (1 Viewer)

How about Cleo Lemon who is no better than 3rd string now on JAX yet he is making $9 mill over 3 yrs? He sucked in Miami.
Who are you thinking will be ahead of him besides Garrard? And what young QB do you think would have done well in Miami last year? Were they 1-15 because of him?
Quinn Gray did a good job last year and it would have made more sense to resign him, but for some reason now JAX thinks Lemon is better? Obvouisly Gray goes elsewhere now.As for what young QB would have done well in Miami last year, no one and no they weren't 1-15 only because of Lemon but $3 mill a season for 3 yrs, for a stiff like him? Waaay too much.
Quinn Gray didn't want to come back and obviously be the backup. He was looking for a chance to be a starter. He's still looking. (I'm surprised Mike Smith hasn't brought him in at Atlanta.)

Lots of deals will look bad in retrospect, and a few we're mocking will look good in a few years. I, for one, don't think the Jerry Porter contract is a bad deal AT ALL. He's 29 years old, has been productive (particularly in the red zone) and is an upgrade over what JAX was fielding last year at the position. Plus, he's only guaranteed $10mm. Compare that to what Andre Davis got from Houston, $8mm guaranteed; or what Berrian got to go to Minnesota (2x the money). AS A TEAM, the Raiders are running away with the bad deals so far. They gave Javon Walker $27mm over three years (i.e., Randy Moss money) and guaranteed $16 of it ($1mm more than Moss is getting); signed Tommy Kelly to monster DT money even though he's very much unproven as a full-time 2-way tackle, and threw tons of cash Gibril Wilson's way. I'm not knocking Wilson; he's a solid safety. But they overpaid for his services based on the post Super Bowl hype.
At all?Productive? ... Inconsistent. 29? ... A fair string of injuries.Upgrade? ... maybe a minor upgrade over last years crew but with the signing of Williamson, etc. do you really need Porter at that price?I do agree they aren't in the same ballpark as the Raiders.

Unless Lloyd is paying the Bears to be on the roster, he's at the top of the list.
You may want to rethink that one. Lloyd will only count for $485,000 against the cap. True, he'll probably be a non-factor, but a very inexpensive non-factor.I think Javon Walker wins the prize. Oakland has to overpay for free agents to go there, and while he's a good #2 WR when healthy, he's had way too many knee problems to pay him what they did. That's the nature of free agency though. Overpay for talent.

I think the Vikings overpaid for Berrian, but I'd have to go with Jerry Porter to Jacksonville. Here is a guy who is 29 years old. He's never had a 1000 yard receiving season in his career. He couldn't beat out Ronald Curry as the number 1 receiver last year. He has been the leading receiver on his own team once in his career. He's a headcase who quit on the Raiders. He has no problem throwing his teammates under the bus. And the Jaguars sign him to a $30 million dollar contract with over $10 million guaranteed. That is the stupidest signing so far this year. That may be one of the worst signing of the last five years.
You had a playoff team with a ton of cap room and an obvious weakness at WR meeting an overall thin crop of free agent WRs. Did they overpay for Porter? Yes. But they had to overpay for him if they wanted to lock him up quickly. About the only free agent WR that could have been a better fit was Berrian (Who openly was asking for Top 10 money and he's never had a 1000 yard season either.)Even with Porter's down year last year with that dreadful offense, he still had more receiving yards than anyone on the Jags staff.Could this move backfire on the Jags? Absolutely. But it's nice to see they identified an obvious area of weakness and tried to improve it.

Hands down, it's the Walker contract and it isn't even backloaded.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/raidersblog/2008/03...alker-contract/

In 2008, he gets an $11M signing bonus and a base salary of 1M (12M in 2008 and 12M average per year)

In 2009, he's due a $5M roster bonus and a 4M base salary (21M through 2009 and 10.5M average per year)

In 2010, he's due a base salary of $6M (27M through 2010 and 9M average per year)

In 2011, he's due a base salary of $8M (35M through 2011 and 8.75M average per year)

In 2012, he's due a base salary of $10M (45M through 2012 and 9M average per yea)

In 2013, he's due a base salary of $10M (55M through 2013 and 9.167M average per year)

If Walker has more knee problems, the Raiders could have a decision to make next offseason. Cut him and absorb 9 Mil in dead money or keep him and pay him another 9 Mil.

I'd go Gibril Wilson. Oakland has a long legacy of Super Bowl performers who didn't do much for the Raiders (Brown, Maryland, Howard)Walker's contract doesn't look too horrible for a solid #1 WR for the first few years, assuming he can stay healthy and Russell can get him the rock. While the Kelly signing is kind of baffling, I think a D lineman is going to have more impact on a defense than a safety. Take a risk on a D lineman is understandable in today's NFL, safeties are a bit easier to find in the draft or FA market, at least someone serviceable.
Some of those other Super Bowl signings were over the hill or just not very good. I agree with the positional breakdown but disagree on Wilson.Gibril isn't the best safety in the NFL but he is much better than average and is in the prime of his career. He'll also make the other members of the Raiders secondary that much better. If teams continue to avoid Asomugha now they'll have to deal with one more defender who will make plays. That should also free up Huff to roam the field a bit more.
