What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight?

New Glarus Unplugged IIPA was somewhat of a letdown, though I got it for free, so I'm not complaining. Is it bad that according to my rating records, I've had more New Glarus (which is Wisconsin-only distribution) than any brewery other than Southern Tier and Ithaca (which are both local-ish)?
I live in Wisconsin and don't really drink all that much New Glarus (and agree their IIPA is nothing special). Their Moon Man (APA) and Dancing Man (wheat) are both very good everyday summer beers. I always have a couple bombers of Belgian Red in the basement - it is something not everyone will like, but is an excellent beer if you like that kind of drink. They make several other solid if unspectacular beers that are great to have here locally, but nothing worth seeking out or shipping across the country imo.

Alesmith: Grand Cru, Horny Devil, and Speedway Stout.
I h8 you. I love the speedway stout, but I live in NY, and the ONLY place I've seen it, or it's oak aged version was in Jamaica Plains in Boston. That was 2 times being in October of last year. The place never had it before or since, and because it's in beantown I only get there every month or so.On topic: Having McKenzie's Cider today, instead of the traditional beer (lol @ woodchuck.) It's a bit too sweet though, I think i'll stick with magnar's in the future.
Apparently South Bay isn't shipping right now, but they usually have a huge selection of Alesmith beers (along with pretty much anything else from the west coast) and they ship to NY. The list of beers is down at the moment, but keep an eye out and I'm sure it'll be back up soon.South Bay Drugs
:excited: Great link. I appreciate it, and it is definitely saved for my next pay-day
I know he has the regular Speedway and the beers that Maurile mentioned above. I don't know if he gets the BA Speedway or anything too crazy like that, though. I've never actually bought from him, because I believe someone has to be home to sign for the package (legally, someone has to be 21+, he makes sure to cover all the legal bases) and I'm not home during the day, but I know a lot of people have (maybe Gator, Hack, Furley, Bakes?). He posts at TBS as well.

Thanks for thoughts on the older beers. There's plenty of English and Irish ales, some sours, but mostly just a wide variety of imports. It's three shelves about 20 feet long each. One to three beers form rows going into the shelves - usually just one. So that makes for a ton of different brews. I'll get out sometime today, buy a couple, and maybe jot down some of this inventory.

Question, what's the main differences in English, Irish and Scottish ales? I do love me some Scottish ales. One they have that I'll pick up today is called St Andrews Ale in reference to the golf course. Lots of sediment in that bottle. It's made by Belhaven.
I think this has been covered, but my comment would be that generally the higher abv beers will age better and the lighter or hoppier beers won't. Sunlight and heat will ruin beer over time. It probably goes without saying that a filtered beer will only get stale with age as there is no point to it if you don't have the yeasties in there working their magic. For the different ale styles, it may help to check out the BJCP official style guidelines here: http://www.bjcp.org/styles04/

Also, if you are still on your quest for malty goodness, I had a Rochefort 10 for the first time on Friday and can't say I've ever had a better beer in my life. The price is hard to justify, but worth trying just once if you love the strong, smooth dark ales. For some reason, I had had several Roch 8's over the years, but never tried a 10. I can't afford to make this a regular thing, but would say I'll probably never have an 8 again after what I tasted on Friday.

I loved the Iced Barleywine (always on the lookout if anyone still has any, I have only 1 bottle left), and I really liked some of their wheats - Dancing Man, Black Wheat, and Crack'd Wheat. Bourbon Barrel Bock was good too.

Cigar City Bolita Double Brown - I may have a new favorite beer

Russian River Consecration. Question; Are all sours have a wine taste to them; Don't like wine and the couple of sours I have tried don't work for me??
Cigar City Brewing Big Sound Scotch Ale is one of the best beers I've ever had. They are making good stuff there in Tampa.I think they offer tastings... hmmmm... I'm only about an hour away.
Hmmm, there was a cigar city tap takeover here yesterday and still a bunch left. We haveCubano espresso madura

El lector dark mild

Guava grove saison

Dry stout

Big sound scotch ale

Tocobaga red

Humidor ipa

Should I mix any in with the dipa's or what?
I stand by the Big Sound Scotch Ale recommendationBig Sound Scotch Ale is dedicated to our good buddy Gino, the most punk rock bagpiper you’ll ever meet, and the rest of the men and women of Tampa Bay Pipes and Drums. Brown in color, Big Sound has huge notes of dark sweet toffee with underlying mild notes of coffee in the aroma. The flavor starts with a slight note of cherry and then opens into a Goliath of a malt character with notes of dark sweet toffee, slight hints of coffee and mild notes of toasted bread in the finish. Big Sound Scotch Ale pairs well with Haggis, Highland Games, Huge Heads and Enormous Pillows and of course Bagpipe music.

Dark Horse Fore Smoked Stout, really fine example of smoked beer with a goid balance if smoke, malt, and a little hops.

OB Pizza Port Bourbon Barrel Z-Man Stou on Nitro x2. ####### fantastic.

Terrapin Moo-Hoo. Still letting warm up from the fridge.

New Glarus is in pretty high demand amongst beer people. i used to trade a lot of the regular lineup for other beers. i'm not wacky about their lineup generally either but it rates very well and brings a lot in return.

I wanted to give a PSA. I've lived in the Lakeland FL area for about 2 years. If you live in or near a major metro, you have no idea how difficult it is to find a store or bar with a decent beer selection. It's pretty redneck around here, tons of domestic. But I found a place. In fact I posted in this thread a really nice (expensive) selection / collection I bought from there about 6 months ago. Well, I visited again today. They had a decent selection last time I was there, and it looks like they expanded. I was highly impressed with the selection.

Anyway, I know the odds of this happening are small... but if anyone finds themselves craving a nice craft beer and they feel stranded in central FL near the Lakeland area, go to this place:

Grapevine Fine Wine & Spirits

4738 South Florida Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33813

(863) 648-2002

I promise you won't be disappointed. And I don't think there is anywhere else in town to bother with.

I'll be F'd in a few hours but...

Halfway through a growler of some delicious Ommegang Hennepin Ale (wooooooo American Belgian beer done right!)

and about an eighth through a handle of Jack.

It was from the store I mentioned with the dated bottles. The owner was there so I asked him about this old inventory and he said he was a beer connoiseur and all the beer was in perfect condition. He then made the recommendation above and hit a homerun.

I also scored a ridiculous deal on some great tequila.

I'll be back... many many times.

You ever have Mikkeller Green Gold IPA? Tasted like a Hopslam clone.

Eh I had it on tap this past weekend. I'm sure a bottle would be like $20...classic Mikkeller overpriced beer. It was good, but out of my price range for a consistent buy...
Why buy a clone of Hopslam when the Hopslam is cheaper???
We don't get Bells in Buffalo, NY...

My dad is in Fort Collins and offered to send me some beer. I can get Oskar Blues and New Belgium - looking for some good recommendations for something he could get from that area that I would not be able to find here in the midwest.

drinking a Bell's Consecrator tonight - part of my father's day bounty.

Great DivideOdell'sBrekenridgeOaked Yeti from Great Divide (and regualar yeti) are greatCan't speak too much on the others except the Odell 750ml special releases I've had are very good.

Been drinking mostly SNPA and the Torpedo of late. I'm not sure what it is, but alot of the beers I can find around here and that I used to like, I find myself really hating now. There's just something about those 2. Wonderfully hoppy and well balanced.

Had to pour out half a glass of a couple Magic Hat brews last night (#9 and Blind Faith). They just don't bring the hops the way SNPA and Torpedo do. #9, in particular, is so fruity that I just can't take it. For some reason, it sort of tasted like trying to drink cigar smoke. Blind Faith isn't terrible. Just not as hoppy and delicious as Torpedo, which I couldn't stop comparing it too.

I'm finding Single Chair really boring too.

Still working through another Sam Adams summer sampler, but the only ones I care to drink are the Boston Lager and Latitude 48. Both nice, but not SNPA and Torpedo. The rest either seem too boring or too fruity right now.

Just picked up a couple of others that I'm hoping will break me out of this Sierra Nevada funk of sorts.

It sounds like the Smuttynose IPA has alot of fans on here and I'm excited to try it.

Also got some Heavy Seas-Loose Cannon Hop3 IPA (Copper City). Anyone ever try it?

See I feel this way about the Torpedo IPA, tastes like pine tar to me. I bought a six pack last year and still have 2 int he fridge.Smuttynose and Loose Cannon are AWESOME. Loose Cannon is probably my most favorite IPA ever. They are considerably different than Torpedo, not nearly the dry, hop bite at the end. Almost syrupy going down but I love those kind of IPA's. Enjoy!

When it comes to good beer, I'm still just getting started (drank good beer in college, but was usually too drunk to pay much attention, then settled for macrobrews for far too many years). Still figuring out exactly what I like. So far, I seem to prefer the drier, hoppier beers that I try. I'm so new to decent beers that this could just be a phase.I don't like sweet foods at all and I tend to find many beers far too sweet. So Torpedo is my kind of beer, with SNPA being perfect, when I want to tone down the hops a tad (or don't want to end up plowed). I'm excited to try Smuttynose and Loose Cannon, but I have a feeling I may not like them quite as much. Sounds like they could be a bit too sweet for my tastes. We'll see.

I'm pretty upset that it took me so long to start drinking better beer. Somehow, when it came to picking a food for my dog, I didn't want to settle for feeding him corn-based food, but I settled for drinking corn and rice based beer for many years.

The money I spend doesn't end up really being that much more. An $8-10 macrobrew isn't that cheap when you can plow through 6-8 of them without catching a buzz. At $14.50 a 12-pack (around here, SNPA), a decent craft beer is really a better value. They take me twice as long to drink because they are actually enjoyable to drink and if getting inebriated is the goal, they'll get you there twice as fast. Not to mention, the buzz is much better.

Update: Had the Smuttynose. Loved it.

It's certainly a more balanced beer than the Torpedo. Nice little fruity, orangy thing going on and a nice hoppy kick, but neither are overpowering. The hops seem to really come on at the end, for me.

Had a New Glarus product named "Two Women" last night. Smooth, but not really a summer brew.

Five beers in I told my wife she could tell her friends she came home and caught me red handed with Two Women. She didn't laugh.

Don't know if I mentioned this before in this thread, but Wisconsin beer drinkers should check out the selection at Woodman's grocery store. I was blown away at the number of micro/foreign brews they had. The two stores I know of are off of WI 41/45 and off of US 43 near the ILL border.

Probably bought a little too much from there, but I was like Robin Williams from 'Moscow on the Hudson'. St. Bernardus 4 packs! Sea Dog BluePaw Wheat! Belhaven in the 12 oz six pack! I stuck with the brews I had tasted before, but this will now be my stop when I'm in the mood to try something new. Just a great, varied selection there.

I'm loving the Smuttynose IPA right now. That and Dale's Pale Ale by Oskar Blues. I used to fiend for Green Flash IPA but it just resurfaced in Baltimore after a long absence and I swear it doesn't taste as good. Maybe we got an old batch. And my favorite for a while was the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA, but that also tastes a little different to me now - significantly more boozy at the finish, which I don't like as much.

I like the Loose Cannon IPA, don't love it. But since it's made here, I can always count on it being fresh.

Growler of Ommegang Hennepin, a growler of Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and an assorted case of Spaten which contains a few optimators, franziskaners and lagers.

Stopped by the beer shop today and picked up a few of the beers I've seen mentioned here that I've never tried:

Stone Levitation Ale

Lagunitas IPA

Two Hearted Ale

Victory Hop Wallop

Yards Philly Pale

Hi, first time poster here.... um...

I prefer GM over any drink, but as far as beer goes...

I like Stella as my go to. It's Heineken w/o the aftertaste. Second favorite is probably Sam Adams Octoberfest with a dingy Miller Lite being the bare minimum.

How far do I have to go and can you help me?

Had 2 16oz Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy tonight simply because I was at the ballgame and they decided not to offer up anything good. I've documented the crap selection they have here before:

Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy (at least it's refreshing on a summer day)

Fosters (ugh)

Miller Lite (this is so close to not even being beer)

Narragansett (guess some people like this. on the same level as Fosters/Bud for me)

Coors light (battling Miller Liter for the worst beer imaginable)

Blue Moon (not a big fan of wheat beer)

They couldn't at least have a Sam Adams available? I just don't get it.

Little bit of everything tonight, I'll update as I go:

Newcastle Brown Ale 12 oz

New Belgium Fat Tire 12 oz

Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA 650ml

Abita Abbey Ale 650ml
