What kind of WINE did you drink last night? (2 Viewers)

My local wine store got their hands on a case of 2009 Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classe

they are selling them for $899.99 a piece

:mansion:
You know, my biggest reservation about spending a large amount on a bottle is that, at some point, you have to figure out who is worthy of sharing that bottle with. I might just down that one on my deathbed.
1990 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is the wine I am opening if the Miami Dolphins win the Super Bowl. All me. Nobody else. Open it up right after the win, decant it, and drink it about six hours later with some grilled lamb chops, cous cous, and whatever vegetable I have on hand. It is 23 years old right now but it could age another 30. I just hope I don't have to wait that long. I have two bottles so I have to figure out another event to enjoy it with.
I could become a dolphins fan for a glass......

local wine store just got in a couple of cases of 2010 Domaine Du Grapillion D'Or 1806 - will be picking up a couple of bottles this afternoon.

The wine is from Gigondas which is neighbors with Châteauneuf. 94pts by Wine Advocate

opened one of these up last night. decanted for about 6 hours. It was absolutely fantastic. I wish I bought more :kicksrock:

'09 Medlock Ames Bell Mountain Ranch Red

I've seen this wine in the $33-$40 range, and I'm not sure I'd pay that. There's a local wine shop that carries it for $23, though. At that price point, it's a nice bordeaux blend. It's still a little young, though. It needed to be decanted for a couple of hours to really open up. Pretty good little table wine.

I'm waiting to see if Chris Loxton's latest Sonoma Reds is as good as the last few lots, and then I'll pobably buy a case of this and/or a case of that to have on hand for gatherings.

Alsatian pinot blanc
Love this. Alsatian wine rocks!

Drank a bottle of bubbles from there tonite. Gustave Lorentz Cremant d'Alsace Brut.

Outstanding
I am also a big fan of Alsatian wines. A couple of months before starting culinary school in 01 my wife and I did a 4 week driving tour of France...starting in Alsace. While liking the wines prior to the trip, fell in love with the area. Loved the German architecture and bier, and French cuisine and both German and French wines... the towns were gorgeous.

Route de Vins?

Marcel Deiss, Hugel, Trimbach, Willm, Roland Schmitt, etc.....good times

I'm more of a beer guy but Winking Owl Cabernet found at Aldis is the best quality inexpensive wine you will find. We have taken this to a few blind wine tasting parties and it has won over higher priced wines that others have brought trying to impress.

Not one for the wine snobs but will really surprise for a cheap $3 house wine.

has anyone had experience with this? Seems like a lot of scratch and not sure if it is one of those over-hyped wine gadgets.
yes. we bought one for our tasting room and in a limited trial (just six months) it's performing as advertised. kinda spendy at $300, but a great tool if you want to access some gems in the cellar without pulling the cork.

thanks GB - I may have to get one with my Euro Cave purchase this Spring. How long do the cartridges last?

depends on how long you depress the dispenser/trigger. i burned through the first couple of cartridges pretty quick (5-8 uses) but then figured out how to be more judicial. now getting 10-12 uses per.

if you're going Euro Cave, it sounds like you have an above-average cellar. the Coravin will be an essential tool for you to see how a wine is aging and to gauge peak drinking windows.

thanks! I will budget for it along with the eurocave purchase.

For the cave trying to decide between the Comfort 101 and the Professional 1125S - Solid door. Have plenty of time to do the research.

when creating wine storage, err on the side of more.........

some day i know jules is going to send me a treat..... ;)

did you try either of those pinots yet GB?
Oh yeah. I drank 'em.

I do have some treats I have to send out.

Been drinking a lot of Grower's Champagne lately. You like bubbles?

Just grabbed three bottles of 1968 Kopke Port . You like Port?

Highly recommend Juan Gil Jumilla 2011 - $12 at Costco. Had it several years ago and just thought it was OK, but the 2011 is a fantastic value at $12. I'd say it beats most $20 bottles out there.

Only thing I'll caution you on is it has the fake red fruit, hawaiian punch note up front. Because of that I wouldn't call it a 90pt wine, more like 88 for me. But if that profile doesn't bother you - get it.

these things are great....just got one for xmas. Buddy of mine swears that they will make a bottle last up to a month. Very good for the night when you want to try a bunch of wines by yourself.
$300 though

useful for people with expensive cellars who want to see if one of their $100+ bottles needs to lay down for a couple more years

2001 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet, 2010 Joseph Phelps Insignia and 2009 Jonata Cab. Of the three i really enjoyed the Latour the best. It was showing very nicely. Rich deep fruit, balanced acidity....Very impressive. The Jonata Cab was very clumsy compared to the others. My first time trying this wine which i later learned was $100+ per bottle. IMO it needed to settle down quite a bit. Overall i though it was just ok. The Insignia was decanted for three hours. It showed very well paired with a tenderloin course. If not for the BV, this would have been the best wine of the night.

see above :)

Was thrilled to see the winery I worked for hit #17 on the WS Top 100:

http://2013.top100.winespectator.com/list/

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of WS as a publication but I would be foolish to deny its impact in the industry.

They're sold out of the 2010 as you'd probably imagine. If you come across the 2012s, jump on them. Even their baseline Willamette Valley blend (red label) is a heck of a value at $25-30.

Wine out of a box. Yeah, that's right, I said out of a box. Black Box Malbec and Bota Box Malbec taste just fine to me. Great value too!

what's a good gift for an oenophile? Those aerators worth it? I'm reading mixed reviews.
you can never go wrong with a decanter
:goodposting:

Thing about the aerators is that, with some wines it really does help, but that may be 1 in 10 or less where it makes a significant difference (at least in my experience). The same is arguably true of decanters but at least decanters are classic gifts. Having said that, I think $30 for an aerator (checked amazon) is not a bad price point if you decide to go that direction. For some reason, I remember them being closer to $50 not that long ago.

If you're looking for something more humorous, there are some wine related items in here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/emofly/gifts-for-people-who-love-to-drink

I see a Turley Zin was #12. Was at the winery last summer and was disappointed in it. Not bad but I was expecting it to be great. WTF do I know

aerators are fine. most "oenophiles" use decanters, so that's another option as well.

also:

Chill Sticks - mostly for white wine drinkers

Laguiole Corkscrews - if you have FBG money and want to impress

Gift membership to a wine club - most clubs have this option, and it's a good way to introduce someone to wines they don't normally puchase

Riedel "O" series glasses - these are stemless and are a nice choice for everyday wine glasses (dishwasher safe)
