What kind of WINE did you drink last night? (1 Viewer)

Hey Bob,

You might simply try typing the full name in quotation marks and googling it. You might uncover some wine distributors or restaurants that still carry it or have some left that you might be able to access.

Loomba

Local wine store in Calgary is selling 2005 Bordeaux futures. I am probably going to pop in and pick up a few bottles to set aside and open on my 50th birthday or when I retire... I'll let you know what I pick up.

Yeah, I did that. Mostly old links to wine shops and reviews.

Bob,

Maybe a good wine store can inquire for you with other wine stores they may be associated with. Perhaps, they'll put out an APB for the vintage.

Perhaps list the wine here. Let the rest of us take a look at our local wine shops to see if we get lucky. We can call it an Oenophiles Scavenger Hunt. I'd be happy to check in the two or three wine shops I frequent. Maybe offer a reward for anyone that can find you a bottle or two (may I suggest a bottle of wine???).

Loomba.

Hey guys...haven't chimed in here in a while as I have been on vacation. I just finished updating my list and have gone with a totally new pricing structure. $18 mark up on every single bottle. I think the reduction in price will cause 1. more tables to buy a bottle instead of glasses, 2. cause more tables to get a second bottle, and 3. create a buzz through word of mouth (which is what drives the restaurants here more than any amount of advertising could) in the dining community. Chef & I also just decided to go ahead and get a few more "big" names like Opus One, Silver Oak...etc and give them the same $18 markup.

Example

Caymus 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon @ Dante's Kitchen: $67.

Caymus 2003 Cabernet Sauvigon @ Cochon (a new very hip place in the CBD): $135

I feel like we have declared war on the other restaurants in town. I cannot wait to sell Opus One for under $80  :lmao: :boxing:

it would make me come in for sure. good idea, you know where i work & we charge almost double.

i can't wait to find myself having dinner at your place. it'll be awile since i just had my first baby, a girl! :excited:

I would like to make a reservation Tipsy. I'll start with a nice Pinot and finish off with the Caymus.

Where is your restaurant? Nawlins (a guess based on your avatar description)? A bit of a hike from Calgary but at these prices!...

I would love to come down for some good 'Nawlins food.

Wait a second Tipsy!

Where's the Turley? :boxing:
Hiding in my wine cabinets. I still have 6 bottles, but those are not for sale. I told you I would hold a couple for a year or so just in case one of ya'll show up!

Tipsy, what's the name of the restaurant? If/when I get down to Nawlins, I will definitely swing by.

On another note, had a 2003 Dourthe No. 1 Bordeaux tonight with a little BBQ steak in the backyard. Fairly well balanced and smooth. Nothing exceptional in terms of flavour but pretty good all in all.

Dante's Kitchen

Had a 2001 Piramimma Shiraz tonight with a friend after work. Very nice and smooth and drinkable. Highly recommend giving it a shot.

Havent had the time to read through all the pages yet, so if this is duplicated I apologize in advance...

I recommend a white wine called Evolution. It is from an Oregon region & is made from 9 different grapes. I think it is excellent & havent had any of my friends dislike it yet either. It runs $15 over here on the east coast.

Here is a webpage discussing: Evolution Wine
Just curious. Did anyone try this since my initial post? What did you think?Has anyone had it before?

we serve it by the glass. pretty good stuff. mildly sweet, lots of white fruit, very light, no real finish. i don't care for their red NV blend, meditrina--syran, zin, pinot--an odd mix.

Just what I needed - another reason to go to New Orleans - and still no one to pick up the tab - other than myself...

Wine Newbie here. Next Saturday my wife and I are going out for her birthday. The restaurant offers a $25/ bottle wine list. Any suggestions?

$25 Wine List

Thanks.
I'd give 149 or 152 a try. Two pretty reliable producers there. I can't recall if I have tried these particular two however.

Any ideas on what you will be having for dinner along with the wine? You can always ask the waiter or sommelier, if there is one, for a suggestion that will enhance the meal.

I wouldn't recommend the Banfi Col di Sasso. One of the few wines by them I dislike. Sangioveses are normally safe wines for noobs. I used Sangios and Chiantis to start transitioning my wife from whites to reds.

As a side note, the wife got back on the hooch last night. Had a bottle of J Pinot Noir to ease back into things. Woo-Hoo!!
nice!my wife just had our first baby & can't wait! me either, it's been a little lonely :D

I hear ya'. She was going to try to nurse the first three months, but that's just not going to happen. And while I'm disappointed from the standpoint of it being better for the baby, my tastebuds are doing an endzone dance that would make Chad Johnson envious.

My wife will have some sort of cream pasta, I'll be going for their tasting special. This is my wife's night, so whatever would go best with a cream pasta, most likely with shrimo or chicken involved. Thnaks for the suggestions. My main goal is to not look like an idiot.

so far my wife could feed a village of 20  we're freezing milk like mad & are planning a night out where the baby will get pumped milk for 24 hours after our night out. but at this rate we'll be breast feeding till 1. happy for the baby & it'll be nice to get my wife back in full, a year from now....

J was one of my favorite wineries when I visited Sonoma last year. Very very nice Pinot.

a highly acidic medium body red would be best. a full chianti or a light amarone. gotta cut through that cream

Just got back from South America with our fine wine team, I am impressed.

Navarro Correas --> Grand Rsv Malbec - NICE, GR Cab not as good.

Santa Rita --> Rsv Sauv Blanc, Medalla Real Cab, Floresta Syrah, Casa Real Cab Vertical back to '95 --> NICE

Mont Gras --> Ninquen Vertical - '02/'01 ('03 not so much), ANTU Syrah - NICE

Erasmo --> vertical to '01 -- hit and miss, I liked the '02 most.

Fascinating variety of terroir in both Argentina and Chile... but especially Chile. It is like pieces of every wine making region in the world is spread out between all the valleys. The Andes and coastal ranges make for beautiful scenery and versatility for grape growing. The most exciting part is that they are just now starting to figure it out - look out for Argentina Malbecs and Chards, and Chilean Cab, Syrah and Sauv Blancs!

I have been hearing and reading a lot about Argentina wines the last year or so. "The next Australia."

Thanks. You too.My wife was in the same boat. She could have fed Ethiopia for a year. But she got mastitis, developed a fever of 102 for the better part of a week (Had to go to the hospital to get an IV), and the doctors were worried the baby might get thrush. That freaked her out a little bit.

So she decided to start pumping, feed her from the bottle, and then start weaning. It was more mental than physical at that point, but it's her body and I certainly wasn't going to fight her on it.

Like I said, I'm disappointed at the decreased benefit to the baby, but it does open up a whole world of conveniences. And from everything I've read the first 6 weeks are the most critical in terms of breastfeeding. She'll get through that and then some with everything that gets pumped, so at least there's that.

And now that we're no longer keeping milk, that means the addition of wine to the dinner menu and the addition of birth control to regulate the hormone swings. Bobby Sac wins on both counts!!!

good for the sac! heh-heh

picked up some good wines tonight

01 tapestry for $16

00 chateau cruzeau $17.50

00 pommard $28

gb restaurant connections!!

had a nice spanish 00 reserve tonight, the name escapes me at the moment, but i'll get it to you guys later.

Had a bottle of the 1st edition Kestrel Platinum a couple nights ago. Mix of Gwerstaminer (sp?) and Viogner, a very pleasant white when it's hot out.

Bob, you cork that facelli yet?
Soon. The wife's drinking again, so it won't be long. My first priority is to clear a few spots in the overflowing wine fridge. Then I'll get to a few wines I've been wanting/needing to drink. That's at the top of the list.

Effin bragger.
You know it. 60 ####in bottles of gluttonous joy. It could never possibly be topped by any cellar. Choke on the fumes of my excess, #####es.
:goodposting: edit: Wait, 60? You're bragging about 60?
60 of the best White Zins money can buy. I had to take the racks out to make the boxes fit in there, though.

enjoyed a 98 campo viejo rioja reserva. quite tasty! great earthiness, almost rhone like. rhone lite. great balance. widely available. around $20.

My most recent Opimian offering is featuring the following California wineries that I know very little about:

1. Burgess Cellars (Howell Mountain) -- higher end stuff ($20 - $40 bottle)

2. Steltzner Vineyards (Napa) ($20 and up)

3. Stone Valley (Lodi) ($10 per bottle)

4. Bear Creek (Lodi) ($17 range)

5. Castoro Cellars (San Luis Obispo) ($16 to $21)

6. Butterfly Ridge (Napa) ($10)

7. Ironstone Vineyards (Murphys/Lodi) ($12)

Any of these names jump out at any of you fine gentlemen? All price ranges are in CDN pesos...

burgess does good wines, i'm partial to their zins. i also enjoy the steltzner cab. my only experience with ironstone, is their white 'obsession' it's obscenely sweet. hope that helps.

i got to share in a bottle of 98 chateau latour tonight. heaven!

then i went home & drank a 17.50 dollar a bottle of 01 chateau cruzeau. i love this bordeaux! i have 5 2000's left that will all be cherished.

03 chinon, 100% cab franc, loire valley. deceptive, almost zin-like. it almost had a sparkling wine touch to it.

97 tapestry..surprisingly tight when opened, it loosened up but didn't live up to the vintage.

99 lancaster reserve, pretty damn good. excellent bordeaux blend with nice fruit & a hint of steel. i would've been hard pressed to place this as a new world wine. it had great complexity, with a nice slate finish(hence the confusion)

1999 Pio Cesare Barolo for our 5th wedding anny.

Wow.

:banned:

I know a little bit about California wines, a tiny touch about Italian and Australian, and nothing about South American or French. With that in mind, this was an awesome bottle of wine that you could really tell will age well. Very good alone, it really popped with food - I had a steak and my wife had shrimp/penne vodka sauce, and it was excellent with both foods.

Bought a couple of bottles of Titus Cabernet on a whim. Looking forward to trying it.

Edit to add Etiquette Question - I had a glass of 1985 Dow's for desert. It was OK, but not as good as I was expecting and not worth the $15 I paid. Oh well, live and learn. However, when I got to the bottom 1/3 of my glass, it was full of sediment. I don't mean a few specks - I mean a good tablespoon of sediment. Experienced wine drinkers, what should I have done, if anything? I was a little tipsy and we had plans elsewhere, so I did nothing - but it still irks me.

Nothing.21 year old Port?Sediment is harmless. It doesn't look appealing but if I could show you some of the wine bottles I have hadthat had a lot of sediment. There are many who foolishly believe that the presence of sediment indicates that a wine is somehow flawed. This belief is so prevalent in this country, even among wine sellers and restaurants who should know better. Nowadays, winemaking techniques both here and abroad have been altered to reduce sediment from forming. Many wines are now subjected to such unneeded filtration techniques which, while they do the job of reducing sediment, they also strip the wine of its character.

as usual, good posting. it is a normal to have sediment in wines. as far as what you could have done differently, you could have asked for more if there really was a tablespoon of sediment in your glass. that would take up quite a bit of room in your wee port glass.

as usual, good posting. it is a normal to have sediment in wines. as far as what you could have done differently, you could have asked for more if there really was a tablespoon of sediment in your glass. that would take up quite a bit of room in your wee port glass.
The presence of sediment didn't bother me at all - it was the amount of it. It did take up a lot of room in my glass, and the last 20% of my port wasn't drinkable because of the volume of sediment. The barolo was awesome, though.
