What To Do Near Knoxville/Nashville (1 Viewer)

Scratch going to Gatlinburg.  The whole town is burning down.  Very sad.  I grew up going there as a kid and still go back every few years.

It's not that bad.  It's a voluntary evacuation, and the forecast looks like rain all night tonight over there.

It's bad and it's a mandatory evacuation.  Not sure where you're watching. Plenty of videos online showing it all around the town. Let's hope the rain takes it out.

Mandatory evacuation tonight in Downtown #Gatlinburg TN due to wildfires. Multiple videos here-

I was just in Nashville last weekend for a wedding.  I really enjoyed brewery-hopping in the Gulch district, which was a cool walkable part of town with a bunch of breweries and restaurants in one area.  I went to Yazoo, Tennessee Brew Works, and Jackalope.

Downtown Nashville on Broadway is kind of a drunken touristy ####show, but perhaps still worth a walk around just to get the traditional Nashville country music experience.  There are live bands in basically every bar along the strip.

Some of the restaurants that were recommended to me by a Nashville local included Arnold's, Monell's, Husk, Butcher & Bee, and Butchertown Hall -- although I can't personally vouch for any of them.
I've been to half of your list from Bonnaroo adventures. Great spots.

A few very good and growing local brew pubs in the area as well as yours mentioned.

I'm not a country music fan so downtown Nashville was difficult but had plentiful beer and no one said #### if you accidentally dropped your beer on the metal overhang and completely wasted a bottle of beer.

From twitter : GM at Ripley's Aquarium tells me there is a fire behind the aquarium. Animals are still inside.

I'm hearing Gatlinbuerg is really bad - like the whole strip is destroyed.  Lots of videos out there that are really scary.

We were just there last week, drove up to Clingman's Dome and stayed in a cabin that may be on fire right now...  Sucks.

Its absolutely crazy whats going on now.  No cable news coverage either.

Can't believe there have not been any deaths reported.  Thats a difficult town to get in and out of on a decent day.  Can't imagine the panic of everyone trying to evacuate.

Was up there in October...definitely sad how much has been lost already.  Hopefully that rain will help some.

Yeah, the one story I had read sounded optimistic.  It's clearly much worse than I thought.  Hope everyone is able to get out.   :(

Dollywood unaffected and the camp ground up a couple miles from Gatlinburg I've been to a few times was also not touched.

Which campground?  I have spent a lot of time in Elkmont.  My college roommate used to have a cabin there until the Feds strip them all away from private hands.

I wonder if the park will still be closed in a week and a half?
Will probably be very dicey on what's open.  They close parts quite frequently for weather. I'll keep tabs on it.  Could always take the back way through Townsend and up to Cade's Cove

Trip report so far, hung out in Knoxville Friday.  Nice city, graduation festivities most of the day.  The area downtown with all the bars and restaurants was very nice.  Saturday we drove to the Smokies and did the Cades Cove loop.  Fantastic.  Awesome to be in a valley with the mountains surrounding you.  A big buck (big rack...hehehe) walked 10 feet in front of our car.  We then drove into Gatlinburg.  It seems that most of the damage missed the Gatlinburg strip.  The whole road area was open but there was fire damage all around.  Pretty serene tbh but it was packed and everyone seemed really happy to have people visiting again.  Really pretty area.  Big fans of Trump and the confederate flag.  My liberal daughter was having a cow walking around and seeing all the merchandise and people wearing the flag in some way.  Everyone was super nice though and the whole area was kind of funky and unique.  I liked it and would go back.  Drove from there through Pigeon Forge (hoping to catch a glimpse of Dollywood) then to Nashville.  Those folks sure love them some Dolly down there.  And I though the park would be kind of rinky dink, but judging from the massive parking lot, streams of cars arriving, and the fact that the place is tucked so far back you can't even catch a glimpse of it, Dollywood  is closer to Disneyland than it is to rinky dink.

Now I'm doing a little bit of work while the family sleeps.  I think we'll hit the Oprey land hotel today and perhaps see The Grinch at the Grand Ol Opry.  Also contemplating a bus tour of Nashville.

I'm headed to Nashville for 3 days after Christmas with the wife.  Any music, beer, bourbon, food and suggestions on things to do are very much appreciated.

Just head down to Broadway and start bouncing around.  I like hitting the bars around 2-3 in the afternoon and ending around 8-9 and then getting some BBQ and going to bed. Music starts around noon everyday in every bar on Broadway.

The Gaylord Opryland Hotel was off the hook.  Several huge indoor garden areas with waterfalls, fish, a billion trees and flowers, the works.  Probably the most beautiful hotel I've ever been in.  It's maybe 20 minutes outside Nashville and totally worth the visit.

And @Da Guru has you covered on the eats and music.

If you have a full drinking day hit. Tootsies, Honky Tonk Central,The Stage, Tin Roof and Legends Corner. They are all within a block of each other.  Tucked in the middle of all of them is Jacks BBQ served cafeteria style.  Just tell them what meat and side you want and they slice it right in front of you and throw it on a plate.  Thought it was really good but that was after 6 hours of drinking.

Can you believe it?  @Joe Bryant refused to see me!  I think the mistake I made was putting my list of "improvements" to FBGs out on the innerwebs for all to see.  Word must have gotten back to him and he shut me out.  Of course, knowing that I'm gb's with @ClownCausedChaos2 probably didn't help my cause.  Hopefully I didn't screw up @Otis's interns due diligence work.  JB seemed pretty shook.

Heading to Dollywood next week - uncertain how many days we will go (we get unlimited for a small price with the cabin we are staying at).  Looking for recommendations/info on the following:

- how many days to go (I'm thinking 2?)

- is the Timesaver Pass worth it?

- what are the can't miss ride (if any)

- food recommendations in the park

And any other details anyone may have.

The Stillery on 2nd (across street and closer to Broadway than the George Jones museum) is a small place with some mighty fine eats (says this New Jerseyan)

Worst thing I can say about the place (been there now four times in the past two trips to Nashville in past 18 months) is that it is kind of small and they only serve beer in bottles.

Have not had a bad meal there yet.

Pity bump - anybody have any insight?
Haven't been in years.  Son is going on Friday...there is a winged coaster there that is supposed to be good.

Food outside the area...it's pricy..but the breakfast at Paula Deans place in    :cstu: Forge was fantastic.  So much food!

Haven't read the whole thread but has anyone here been to the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville?

Wife and I would like to go on a Monday night as it is open mic night and "unknown talent" gets their chance, at least that's the way we understand it. We think it would be fun to hear some up and comer.

We have heard it may be difficult to get in as it is a small venue. Any advice is appreciated.

I drove into the parking lot at Dollywood.  You can't see #### from the parking lot, it's tucked into the mountains.

Gatlinburg was kinda cool.  Like a redneck extended boardwalk kind of experience with no boardwalk or ocean.  We walked almost it's entirety and if there weren't 7 Ripley's Believe it Or Not! "museums" there weren't any.  Southern folks must eat that stuff up.  Oh, and lots of donut and fudge shops, but that pretty much every touristy spot.  If you get a chance to go into the mountains I highly recommend it.  The Smokeys are maybe a 1/2 hour away from Dollywood and Cades Cove was pretty stunning.  Should be even more awesome the time of year you're going, new flowers, young animals, etc.

You need to book in advance I think, if it's the same as 7 or so years ago. I enjoyed our night "In the Round" - songwriters performed.

It's a cool experience, bit overhyped but certainly nice evening.

We are interested in the first show on Monday night, which is open mic for amateurs. From what I can tell, that is a first come first serve basis. Curious how early I need to be there as I heard it's a small venue?

Super small venue. I would get there at least 90 minutes in advance. There are only like 20 tables + 10 seats at the bar + 12 seats in a church pew arrangement.
