1989, Houston, Texas. All of us noobs. First five picks, I #### you not: Kicker, kicker, kicker, Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders.

Played it while I was in San Francisco right out of college for two years and then took a five year hiatus and picked it up in 98 with some co-workers and haven't stopped since. Be interesting to see how many do high stakes now. Started 2 years ago and have been increasing investment amount each year.

1990. And finding any information was HARD. I think I remember this one guy got a book on FF, Carpenter's perhaps? I was Soooooo jealous...

It's probably be worth having companion polls on the age or setting (work, school, other) that people started into FF in. The poll results here so far are interesting, though.

Started in '97 with a group of guys from work. I was out to lunch (randomly) with a bunch of them and they needed an 8th to get off the ground, so I agreed. Have been an addict ever since. I know Al Gore invented the internet prior to '97, but for the first year, we still did manual scoring and data was not so easy to come by. I had my trusty FFI mag and picked Jeff Blake with the 8th overall pick...somehow I got lucky and managed to go to the title game that year.

I started around 1998 I think. It was with a work league for free. That got me hooked so next year I started playing for money. I have not looked back.

I'm sort of impressed by the # of vets here. I wonder if that is a FBG thing, though.

Seems like too much of the FF stuff out there is catering to those familiar with the last 10 years of FF. (e.g. the ESPN "Fantasy Hall of Fame")

I never really followed football; I watched a few Super Bowls that was it. A friend was looking for people to be in his XFL Fantasy Football League (yes the XFL had fantasy football believe it or not) and I was brought in. He thought I did well enough to warrant a spot in his NFL league.

1992. None of us knew what we were doing. Lots of kickers taken early. I won the league that year with a bad-### receiving crew: Andre Rison, Sterling Sharpe, and Anthony Miller.

Edit to Add: I had blocked USA Today boxscores out of my conscious mind. Forgot about the pencil and calculator!

I think I started in 1999....but in 2001 I drafted some scrub named L. Tomlinson with my 10.6 pick... All I know is that I just went back and looked at my roster on Yahoo and he didnt even make my final roster!

1988. Me and a buddy played in a 2 man, head to head league.

Lindy's magazine was my source of information for the upcoming season.

1988 in college at NC State with several members of the athletic department. My first pick - Joe Montana.

Then, in second round - TIMMY SMITH, Redskins - fresh off a 200+ yard day in the Super Bowl.

1988 or 89 as we were finishing college. my buddy had been playing with some stuff since 1981.

We hand scored the games until the late 90s from the Washington Post I am guessing. All that time, never had a week where we both agreed on every game.

Thank god for the Internet...

I was working for the NBC station in San Diego that year and joined the work league there. We had access to various news sources via the news servers but nothing like today obviously. We could get the game breakdowns Sunday night though for our scores instead of waiting for the paper in the morning. Plus I got to watch all the AFC games (when NBC still had them) in the tape room on 4" monitors. I came in 4th, I believe it was a good year for Herman Moore and Scott Mitchell..

The stats here so far suggest that a little over 60% of FBGs started playing FF in the "pre-internet" era (pre-1997). I always think of 1997 as the watershed year in this respect. Yahoo FF premiered in 1998, but as I recall, the first year in which nfl.com facilitated live scoring and availability of statistics was 1997.
