Touchdown There

Footballguy
NFL on Yahoo! Sports had this poll and I thought I would see what FBGer's thought on it. I personally think that there has been behind the scenes federal pressure on these talks. Obama was too quick to say "I do not want to get involved but I will" when asked about the NFL labor situation. http://sports.yahoo.com/video/player/nfl/24402258

This means the President has had meaningful discussions about the NFL labor situation prior to this video on 03/03/11. I have no doubt that the owners are feeling more than the sting of the Judge Doty ruling on the "lockout insurance". http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/02/nfl-union-tv-dispute-federal-judge_n_830154.html

Current results of the Yahoo NFL poll:

What will happen by March 11 deadline?

New CBA - 36%

Talks extended - 34%

Work stoppage - 30%

As of right now, only 13% of FBGer's believe there will be a lockout. It looks like the tide is turning. Most people feel that some sort of progress is being made.

Everything is pointing toward a new CBA being agreed to. Another extension is a possibility, but one week should be enough to iron out the final details.

Can't vote. I would only vote lockout because I would be happy if they got a new CBA. Or could say "I was right" if there is a lockout. So I "win" :) either way.

God willing this will be over and we can look forward to the draft and free agency without this cloud floating over us.

I very much wanted to vote new CBA, but something inside me just doesn't feel like that will happen. I think there will be another one week extention and then i hope a new deal at the end of that week.

Yeah, I think the owners are scared to death of Judge Doty.

In my humble opinion, not much has changed. My take is that both the owners and the players want to create all kinds of visible publicity to generate an impression of "we tried really hard, but just couldn't come to a consensus". So, I see whats happening now as 90% posturing and 10% real progress. I hope I am dead wrong.

My hope:

The owners bound and gag Jerry Richardson, sedate Jerry Jones, while the NFLPA locks out the hardliners.

A compromise deal is reached:

[*]player get a minimum of 55% of the revenue

[*]limited OTAs

[*]exhibition games reduced to two

[*]improved health care and retirement funds for players

[*]rookie wage scale imposed; contract length a max of 3 years

[*]salary cap ceiling is eliminated

[*]salary cap cellar is increased

[*]17 game schedule with 2 bye week is approved for the 2012 season

[*]The use of franchise tags increased from 1 to 5, but limited to a one time tag per player

A compromise deal is reached:

[*]player get a minimum of 55% of the revenue This is fine, and how it should be. The players ARE the product, they deserve the majority of the revenue

[*]limited OTAs sure

[*]exhibition games reduced to two Fine

[*]improved health care and retirement funds for players definitely

[*]rookie wage scale imposed; contract length a max of 3 years I think 4 years would be better...some players take that long to even get to their potential

[*]salary cap ceiling is eliminated NO FREAKING WAY. The hard cap is what stops this from becoming like baseball or basketball. Without an upper limit, the small market teams would have no shot, and there would simply be 4 or 5 dominant teams every season. Parity is not a bad thing.

[*]salary cap cellar is increased definitely

[*]17 game schedule with 2 bye week is approved for the 2012 season Why not go the full 18?

[*]The use of franchise tags increased from 1 to 5, but limited to a one time tag per player No comment on this one
My comments in bold

This whole disclosure of financial data is disappointing to hear. Come on owners, get the damn deal done. If there is a lockout now after making such progress over the past couple of weeks, it will be a massive blow.
