What's a sound you heard when you were young that you no longer hear? (1 Viewer)

We play a bunch of Yahtzee at our house once winter starts. I'll start a fire and we'll sit in front of the fireplace and play games almost every weekend and sometimes during the week. I built a wooden "court" since the box fell apart long ago.

It's made with teak wood and I made a lid that slides on with a nice handle. On the underside of that lid we record the winners of each game with a little tic mark. I'm by and far the leader in the clubhouse. I dominate at this game.

Yelling "Yahtzee" at the top of my lungs so the whole house can hear is one of my true joys in life. :headbang:

Beeper going off. Filling up the pay phone with coin after the beeper went off. Hearing "Summertime" blasting out the twelves in the ride as we leave to meet the one who called. Ejecting and flipping the tape.

Milk bottles clinking in a metal carrier
Damn - and I thought I was old
If you think that's old, you should know I also remember when our bottled milk was delivered to an insulated box on the doorstep.
I remember having a square compartment in the side of an old house that could hold either milk deliveries or blocks of ice for your ice box. Seems like it could be modernized to hold packages from Amazon and UPS.

Yes! Reminiscent of listening to AM radio late at night to see if schools would be closed the next day.
Right? I especially remember winters of 77, 78 and 79! What a fantastic time to be a 10 year old with sleds living in a hilly area. We would wake up early, grab our little AM radios and listen for our school to be closed and run around like we won the lottery when our school was announced. We used to build all kinds of things in the snow. . . I mean there's only so many snowmen you can build, you move on to snow forts, etc. We used to play a TON of football in the snow, go sled riding in our buddies huge backyard hill and all of this was done right after Christmas so we had a bunch of new toys to play with, what a blast!

whoa ...

blast from the past - had completely forgotten about that

I still know all the words to this one by heart and love driving my kids crazy singing it.
That's awesome, love it! Maybe it's just nostalgia getting the best of me but I recall my parents going out of their way to get Lawson's chip dip! :)

yep, it was the best - it looks like you can still get it at Circle Ks, even though it's made by some company in Cleveland. And it was the ONLY place to get our chip chopped ham (we've had extensive conversations about it over the years in these threads).

Lawson, Inc. (株式会社ローソン, Kabushiki gaisha Rōson) is a convenience store franchise chain in Japan. The store originated in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, but exists today as a Japanese company.

The company has its headquarters in East Tower of Gate City Ohsaki in Ōsaki, Shinagawa, Tokyo.[3

What happened to Lawson's?

But after Dairy Mart went bankrupt in 2002, the Canadian company Alimentation Couche-Tard acquired the stores and renamed them Circle K. Today, the only vestige of the local stores is Lawson's Original Chip Dip, made by Dairymens Dairy in Cleveland, which continues to be sold at Circle K.

Big Chuck and Little John Intro
Were these guys known at all outside of NE Ohio?
Only Ernie Anderson and Tim Conway. We used to skip dinner and get a pizza (my older brother and I) and watch Big Chuck and Lil John. Good times.
I've met Lil John on a couple occasions and even played in a charity golf event with him at Tanglewood. Of course, I'm old enough to remember Houlihan before Lil John.

Strawberry men.
Walking down the streets all day yelling "StrawBay, STRAWBAY!" with trays of fresh strawberries.

I've never met any of them. I remember sneaking downstairs to watch Big Chuck and Houlihan when I was really little and supposed to be in bed. I had three older sisters and they used to be allowed to stay up that late while my brother and I were supposed to be sleeping. I remember they used to play some old skits and Houlihan was in those so I was familiar with Bob "Houlihan" Wells a little bit. I also remember being a teenager, with my friends at the movie theatre watching Summer Rental with John Candy and noticing that Bob "Houlihan" Wells had a bit part (non-speaking if I recall) in that movie and I'm yelling out "holy crap that's Houlihan!" :)
