I used to pride myself on only owning 3 pairs of shoes. Dress, Work and Gym. I've evolved to having a shoe for every occasion now and that has lead to a storage problem. How many pairs of shoes does the average FBG own? For this poll you can include sandals and crocs because I know you fellas love your crocks.

That I ever wear out in public? I think 3 or 4. If you include house sandals and old sneakers/boots in the garage that I use for mowing/yard work/winter shoveling then we're in the 6-10 range.

Maybe 30?

7 or 8 pair of boots (combo of hiking, winter, rain, work, casual)
4 pair of climbing shoes
2 tennis shoes (like actual tennis not the generic term)
2 pair basketball shoes
4 pair Altra trail running shoes
3 dress shoes
4 or 5 casual sneakers
2 pair cycling shoes
Probably some others I am forgetting

Just remembering some others
2 pair crocs
2 pair flip flops

Off hand…
8 pairs of sandals
1 croc my wife just bought me
5 pairs of shoes for work
3 pairs of boots
2 pairs of cycling shoes
5 pairs of running shoes in the current rotation
1 pair running shoes unworn
2 pairs of old running shoes now for yard work
8 pairs of running shoes I just haven’t donated yet
2 pairs of slippers

Wow. I thought 18 was bad. Green light to buy some more boots!

Wife on the other hand....might need a calculator and a team of archeologists to rummage through the house to find out.

Casual/work sneakers
Indoor Basketball/workout sneakers
Outdoor basketball sneakers
Brown dress shoes
Black dress shoes
Old sneakers for basic yardwork
Regular Sandals
Sliders style sandals (wear to and from gym)
Water shoes (kind of like sandals? wear at the lake or river)
Work boots for heavier outdoor stuff

Too many to count. A lot of them are split between two places, so that adds to the number. I don't like to have to lug shoes back and forth when we travel.

15 or so pair of sneakers - all Nike. My SIL works for Nike, so I can get 40% off whatever the going price is. A lot of them I've gotten for $50 or less.
10 or so pair of dress shoes - mostly Allen Edmonds. Wear them to work stuff when I have to wear a suit, weddings, etc. Some look good dressing up jeans.
7 or so pair of semi-casual shoes - loafers, chukka boots, etc.
5 or so pair of flip flops - mostly Reef, but a few randoms
3 pair of Crocs - To be fair, I have a pair at home and a pair at our vacation spot. I got the 2nd pair when the 1st pair broke a week in, but they're still wearable, just not in sport mode.
2 pair of cowboy boots - Lucchese, one brown, one black.
3 pair of work boots
2 pair of slippers
1 pair of cleats
1 pair of snowboard boots
do roller blades count? If so, +1 there.
and a partridge in a pear tree.

It's really sad when I list them all out...

Where do you put them all?

I fell into a similar boat with sneakers. I get under armour discounts at 40-50% off some times. Apply those to the outlet sales and its sub $50 shoes.

I have 5 or 6 in regular rotation... so I put 6-10. But I have a bunch of specialty shoes (tennis, soccer, hiking, snow, etc) that push the number up a bit... so i changed to 11-15. probably a little more than that.

1 pair of dress shoes
1 pair of business casual shoes
1 pair of everyday sneakers
1 pair hiking shoes
1 pair of winter boots
1 pair of water shoes
1 pair of crocs for the beach
~12 pairs of running shoes, most of which are shot but I'm really slow to throw them out

Our walk-in closet has custom wire shelving. I have 3 shelves for shoes, probably ~8' wide per shelf, so that's 24 linear feet. That's where the dress, semi-casual, and the nicer sneakers go. Most of the other ones live either under the bed, in the hall closet, or in the garage. As I noted, probably 3 pair of sneakers, a few flip flops, a pair of crocks, and a pair of work boots are at our bay house.

If I really wanted to, I could probably purge a few pair at this point, especially in the semi-casual category. I could purge elsewhere, but honestly, I have very little that never gets worn.

Is this just for shoes, or do you own a crap load of clothes too?

For me, I have a decent bit of clothes. WAY more clothes than I need, but not as absurd as my shoes. Pre-COVID, when I was in the office every day and had to wear business casual, I did have ~45 collared dress shirts, which was really excessive. I'm probably down to 20 now. I have a ton of just casual tee shirts, and I also hold on to clothes probably a year or two too long, so it's not so much that I buy a lot now, but that I don't purge enough.

Do specific/limited use shoes count like golf shoes, baseball cleats, sandals. etc?

If so, I'm easily 50+ (despite my wife's chagrin).

I hate shopping with the rare exception that I love buying footwear.

What’s a crap load of clothes? I have more of a habit buying shoes than clothing.

We have a walk in closet, not a huge one - maybe 6’ x 8’? My wife uses 3 of the 4 walls. The one wall I have has my work clothes hanging, and maybe a dozen polo shirts. I have a large drawer of t shirts, a 5 drawer dresser with one for socks and underwear (I do have a lot of those for some reason), two are workout clothes including bike shorts, jerseys and speedos. One drawer for shorts and swim trunks. One is a junk drawer.

Assuming we are talking all footwear off the top of my head without looking in closets:

~10 pairs of sneakers (ranging from basketball shoes to casual/fashion sneakers) that I regularly wear
~10 pairs of dress/work shoes
~20 pairs of golf shoes (this is arguably egregious but I golf a lot and do wear most of them)
~5 pairs of sandals
3 pairs of slippers/house shoes
1 pair of boots
1 pair of softball shoes/cleats

So, yeah, right around 50. I attribute this to my genuine enjoyment of purchasing shoes along with my development of plantar fasciitis a couple of summers ago that basically force me to buy high quality footwear often.

I do not own clothing like this. Though I probably have like 40 hats that I wear (mainly for golf).

I think I have something like: 1 pair of tennis shoes, 1 pair of casual something, 1 pair of "nice" dress shoes, 1 pair of sandals for the pool, 1 pair for work, and 1 pair of old tennis shoes for mowing and working around the house. I've never understood the pull towards clothes and fashions, so I am also a slob that has 5-6 versions of the same jeans and just wears metal or concert t-shirts 95% of the time too.

Id count them. I have a pair of cleats I dust off once a year for the annual turkey-bowl football game at work. They just take up space the other 364 days.

See my above post - for me that means more than about 10 different outfits. I guess when I read those lists of shoes I was guessing they are all for different settings, and correlate with an equal if not greater number of pairs of X to go with them.

To be fair, most FFAers are 1%ers financially, right? ;) I am probably in the 1% on the other end. I dusted off something Ive had since college for an event recently.

You sound like my wife.

ETA: A lot of those shoes are bought with clubhouse credit from my winnings so it's not like I'm out there buying top of the line stuff at MSRP.

If I’m a 1%er on anything, it’s the number of kids we have.

Casual/work sneakers
Indoor Basketball/workout sneakers
Outdoor basketball sneakers
Brown dress shoes
Black dress shoes
Old sneakers for basic yardwork
Regular Sandals
Sliders style sandals (wear to and from gym)
Water shoes (kind of like sandals? wear at the lake or river)
Work boots for heavier outdoor stuff
This seems like a near-optimal list. Anyone with substantially more than this...I just don't get it

Probably all I have most times a single movie has been watched.

1 pair of three year old sandals that are comfortably falling apart. Will get a new pair when they go on clearance in August.
1 pair winter outdoor/hiking boots
1 pair black utility work shoes
1 pair of nicely worn in running sneakers
1 pair of new sneakers
2 pair of beat up but slip on old sneakers that may or may not have a lasting "scent"
1 pair of house shoe, aka slippers
1 pair black dress shoes for those occasions

I dusted off something Ive had since college for an event recently.
Earlier this year in a bin of stuff I found a t-shirt from a 1990 math competition. Still fits so I rock it around the house every now and then.
“Oldest item of clothing you routinely wear” and “oldest item you routinely use” should be upcoming polls.

I don’t think I wear anything more than 20 years old but my wife often wears a sweatshirt from college, late 90s.

My oldest item I use is a red dog dog dish I bought my junior year in college to use as a cereal bowl. Almost 30 years later it’s still my go to bowl.

Hmmm more than I used to

2 pairs of slip on leather sketchers for work
Pair of slip on sketches walking shoes
Pair of brown dress shoes I never wear
Pair of black dress shoes I hardly ever wear
Blue crocs
American flag crocs
Fuzzy yellow crocs (wife might have tossed those)
1 or 2 pairs of old shoes for mowing the lawn but usually just wear crocks maybe just need to purge those
Snow boots
Ankle high boots
Steel toe boots
I think 1 or 2 pairs of sandals / flip flops

probably missing something

I’d say it’s the work sketchers or crocs 90% of the time though

I have a shirt from the 90s I mow in sometimes. I probably have a full outfit older than my children (13 &15).

I have a pair of steel toed boots from the 90s that still get worn 3 or 4 times a year.

I have a pair of overshoes that my dad owned no telling how old they are. I only break those out once every year or two.

Good question.

2 pair of athletic shoes (I immediately throw a pair away when I get a new pair)

2 pair of work/business shoes

2 pair of Olukai sandals (1 for formal beach wear and one for daily wear)

2 pair of golf spikes (keep the 2nd pair only so my Dad has something to wear when he visits.

4 pair of social shoes; (2 pair of Vans, 1 pair of designer Asics, 1 pair of Kobe’s)

2 pair of boots - 1 for hiking and 1 for snow/mud/camping

So ~ 14 total. That feels like way too many, and far more than I really need. 🤷‍♂️

I was thinking, "man, Tommy is quite disciplined with this... no way I could limit myself like that."

2 dress - one black and one brown
1 casual dress
1 weekend sneakers with shorts
1 running
1 walking (this was my running shoe)
1 lifting (this was my walking shoe)
1 mowing (this was my lifting shoe)
2 slides (one for going out and one for around the house)

1 pair sneakers
1 old ratty pair sneakers for yardwork only
1 pair flip flops
1 pair steel toe boots
1 pair brown everyday shoes
1 pair brown dress shoes
1 pair black dress shoes
1 pair golf spikes that I wear maybe twice per year these days

8 total pairs for me.
My wife has at least 8 pairs of just flip flop/sandals, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was actually 12.

~20 pairs of golf shoes (this is arguably egregious but I golf a lot and do wear most of them)

Yeah, don’t know anything about golf, and have too many climbing shoes, but 20 pairs sounds absurd.

Then again, I have $1000+ mountaineering boots I’ve only worn for 11 days, so maybe I shouldn’t be so judgy.

For the OP, I’m at 25-50:

3 pair slippahs
2 running
3 trail running
1 hiking
1 tennis
2 biking
2 dress loafers
8 climbing
2 water shoes
1 camping booties
1 casual athletic
2 closed toe slip-ons
2 ski boots
1 mountaineering boots
1 tabis
2 approach shoes

I seem to have a handful of polos and dress shirts i've had for decades. So old they are back in style again, right?
