whats up with Steve Smith? (1 Viewer)

All I can find is something about that he left the game or left the game a couple of times last week with a undisclosed injury.

What does that mean?

I might make a trade offer for him and I want to hear the latest. I can't seem to find anything definite so I am thinking it can't be anything serious.

Thanks

He's very good. No: very, very, very good.
Except for last week.
Won the game for us in the third quarter without catching a pass, basically.Fantasy-wise, not a great day, but before this week he was at or near the top, no?No injuries of which to speak, but good luck getting someone to part with him.
Well, since this is a website dedicated to fantasy football, that's about the only kind of very, very, very good that we're interested in.

Do whatever you can to get him. One of the few wrs that cannot be stopped on most weeks. No matter what you do.

I watched the entire game.

He missed a couple easy catches. Atlantas played good d on him. Specifically Dante Hall. The game was very exciting without Steve Smith...weird.

Footballguys recap.

WR Steve Smith, Rush: 1 - 6 - 0, Rec: 1 - 10 - 0 (6 targets)

Smith was blanketed by DeAngelo Hall the entire game. Smith had two uncharacteristic drops early on and he didn't have a catch until there were 10 minutes left in the game. While he didn't contribute with stats, Smith did cause Hall to blow up and possibly cost the Falcons the game. Smith had him beat and forced Hall to commit a 37 yard pass interference penalty. On the very next play Hall was hit with a 15 yard personal foul. On the same drive, Hall continued to jaw at Smith and another 15 yard penalty was thrown on Hall. Carolina then scored a touchdown. So even though he only had one catch, Smith should probably be credited with an assist on the Panthers second touchdown

The concern with Smith isn't last week's game - which was putrid - but the effects of Carr as the QB. In my opinion, Carr is a rather sizeable downgrade from Delhomme though he is much better than the backups the Panthers have had in the past. As we all know, Carr is very sack-friendly and gets jittery at hearing his own cadence in the pocket. Both are major potential downgrades for Smith. On the plus side, as we saw with Andre Johnson last season, Carr can get the ball to his top WR often so in a PPR league Smith's production has a chance to remain high from a reception standpoint. It also helps that the Panthers run a lot of quick hitters to Smith where the QB doesn't have to do much other than take 1 or 2 steps back and pass. That helps both Smith and Carr since it gets the ball to Smith quickly and it prevents Carr from having to stand in the pocket and make decisions. The greater concern is TDs. I'm not sure Carr is going to be able to get the ball downfield to Smith as well as Delhomme can so the TDs Smith will get may have to be ones where he breaks free quickly and takes it to the house. He's definitely capable of that given his immense talent but those are more difficult TDs to generate and predict.

Bottom line: I think Smith needs to be downgraded a bit with Carr at QB. Instead of being a Top 3 WR (which I believe him to be) I think he moves down to the 7-9 range. I think his receptions will be strong, his yardage could take a minor hit and his TD potential takes a stronger hit. He'll still be a darn good WR1 but it may be more difficult for him to reach elite status with Carr. I hope I'm wrong and he doesn't miss a step with Carr but I do think the potential for a downgrade in production is there.

David Carr never has played with this kind of offense in his career. Only reason you would down grade S. Smith is if you think that Panthers decide they are going to run the ball even more now.

Carr has played with a top WR talent and a respectable running game. I think Smith is better than Johnson but Johnson is pretty darn good. One could argue Dom Davis was actually better - at least more consistent when healthy - than Foster or Williams. Carr has had similar talent around him in the past and failed. Maybe the Panthers will provide him with better coaching? Perhaps but I think the best thing that can happen to Smith is for Delhomme to heal quickly. Again, I hope I'm wrong because I'm a Smith owner but I'm downgrading him a bit as long as Carr is in the lineup.

The situation in Carolina seems to me to be a lot like Houston. Like packersfan said, top WR and decent running game. In Houston, all Andre Johnson did was lead the league in catches. I wouldn't worry too much, Smith will get his.

This isn't true. Even if you're just here for FF, and you didn't see the game, it's good to know that if he wasn't taken down, he would've added a huge catch to his totals.Basically, he didn't have a bad game at all when his statline reflected otherwise. If you're not interested in that, you need to be.

Very good thread. We need more like this. As a Smith owner, I am glad to hear that he was close but just didn't quite ge there.

The concern with Smith isn't last week's game - which was putrid -
See what I mean with the above post? People take a look at the line and call it "putrid", and people can overreact based on it.That's why you need more information.
I saw the game and thought it was one of the worst games Smith has played in a long time. Congrats to him that he got in Hall's head. That's fine and good. But he had two easy drops early and was taken out of his game by an over-rated CB. I didn't think Smith played well and obviously from a fantasy perspective it was downright pathetic.Edited to add - by no means am I saying Steve Smith sucks or anything silly like that. Just saying that I wasn't very impressed with him last week. He's too good a player to put up a game like that in my opinion.

Smith falling to the 7-9 range is quite a big dropoff and an overreaction IMO. I suppose there is a reason Carr is the backup and Delhomme the starter but if anything Carr will lean on Smith maybe a little more. It's not like Delhomme is a stud QB here the likes of Palmer, Manning, etc. He's an average QB and Smith has still put up tp 3 WR numbers this year despite only being 14th in the league in targets. If the targets are there Smith will put up big numbers no matter the QB. Unless Carolina significantly changes their offensive philosophy with Carr, Smith should have no trouble getting around the same number of targets he did with Delhomme. There's no way IMO he drops to the range you are talking about.
