Wheelhouse - Interesting Stats, Info and Tidbits

Thru Week 12

In this edition you will find out...

* Which team or teams have reached the 100-yd rushing mark agains the Vikes this season

* How many consecutive games the Colts have given up a 100-yd rusher

* Just how good Chad Johnson has become

* A sneak peek into how Matt Leinart might fare after passing for 400 yards last week

1. Free-falling - Rex Grossman has 5 TD and 7 INT's in his last 4 games with a QB rating avg of 61.8. In the Bears 2 losses this season, Grossman has 1 TD and 6 INT's. In his 9 wins, he has 17 TD passes and 8 INT's. In his last home game, Grossman was 18 of 42 for 210 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs.

1st game this year @MIN - Grossman was 23 of 41 for 278 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT's - QB rating of 64.9. One of four games in which he had 2 INT's or more.

Rex's QB rating by month

Sept. 100.9

Oct. 81.0

Nov. 57.1

2. Carson Palmer vs. Baltimore - Carson Palmer's lowest QB rating for a single game this year is 52.4, which was ironically at Baltimore. He has had 4 games this year in which he did not have multiple TD passes. The Baltimore game was one of those games.

3. Turning the ball over multiple times = L in the win column, right? - The Patriots and Seahawks won their games last week despite turning the ball over at least 4 times. New England had 5 turnovers and still won. :o

4. Chad Johnson is on a tear - CJ had 482 yards and 2 TD's in the first 8 games of the season. In the last 3 games he has 576 and 5 TD's.

Going further...

Chad has had 4 games this year where he has caught a pass of 40 yards or more. (5 games of 30+ yard passes). Surprisingly, in his last 3 games, he has only been the recipient of 34% of Palmer's completions.

5. LT for MVP? - If LaDainian Tomlinson didn't play another game this season, Robbie Gould would have to kick 12 more FG's to surpass him in total points scored for the year.

More on LT...

The guy has 16 TD's in his last 5 games. 17 if you count his TD pass! That's a clip of 3.4 TD's per game. Every 66.7 yards he gains, he scores a TD. If you count his 6 career TD passes, he is averaging 18.3 TD's per year if his 2006 season ended today. He has never had less than 10 TD's in a season and the last 3 years he has amassed 56 TD's. That's more TD's than Marc Bulger has passing TD's in the same span (49). That, my friends is sick!

6. Just in case you wondered...The game after a QB throws for 400+ yards

There have been 6 instances in which a QB has thrown for 400 yards this season. Matt Leinart was the most recent last week. So historically how have they done for the next game?

Peyton Manning week 2 - 400 yards. Week 3 he threw for 219 yards with 1 TD

Joey Harrington week 7 - 414 yards. Week 9 (bye for wk 8) he threw for 137 yards with 3 TD

Ben Roethlisberger week 9 - 433 yards. Week 10 he threw for 264 yards with 3 TD

Carson Palmer week 10 - 440 yards. Week 11 he threw for 275 yards with 3 TD

Drew Brees week 11 - 510 yards. Week 12 he threw for 349 yards with 2 TD

Matt Leinart week 12 - 405 yards. Week 13 ????

Averages in the game after = 248.8 yards, 2.4 TD's

7. Alexander is back in the house - Shaun Alexander has 425 rushing yards on the season. He got nearly half of that last week vs. GB. All he needs to do to reach 1000 yards for the year is average 115 yards rushing each game for his next 5 remaining games. It's very doable. The crazy thing is he has only 2 TD's so far and his receptions is WAY down with only 6 for the year.

8. Hey Torry - what's up? - Torry Holt is averaging only 12.6 yards per catch this year compared to his career average of 15.1 He has a very respectable 795 yards receiving and he's on pace for over 1100 yards, but if he stuck to his average he'd be at 950 yards right now and on pace for 1389 yards.

9. A healthy dose of Edgerrin James this week? - The Rams have allowed a league high 12 running plays of 20 yards or more.

10. Building on the information above - Big info here  - Two teams are allowing over 5.0 yards per rush this season. Go ahead, take a guess then peek below for the answer. You may be surprised.

11. IND has allowed 100-yd rushers in each of the last ? games. What do you think? Go ahead, take a guess.

The answer is 1. In fact the Colts, believe it or not, have not allowed back to back games where they allowed a 100-yd rusher this season. (There's your water cooler stat for you to tell your buddies).

Here's the really interesting part - The Colts have allowed a 100-yd rusher in every other game since week 1.

Week 1: 110 T. Barber

Week 2: HOU no 100 yd rusher

week 3: 103 M. Jones-Drew

week 4: NYJ no 100 yd rusher

week 5: 123 T. Henry

week 6: BYE

week 7: WAS no 100 yd rusher

week 8: 136 M. Bell

week 9: NE no 100 yd rusher

week 10: 109 A. Thomas

week 11: DAL no 100 yd rusher

week 12: 124 B. Westbrook

Week 13: ????? BEWARE Travis Henry fans!!!

12. Boy with the above tidbit of information, I could quit right now - but I've got more. The following TE's lead their team in receptions and there looks to be a correlation between that and success.

51 Heap

50 Gates

48 T. Gonzalez

45 B. Watson

37 Crumpler

There still may be hope for Atlanta to squeeze into the Playoffs, because the average wins for each of these teams (not including ATL) is 8.2. Or, maybe that only applies to AFC teams. ;)

13. All hail Steven Jackson - Jackson is averaging 8.7 receptions over his last 4 games. Compare that to 3.7 receptions per game in his first 4 games.

14. Darrell Jackson is quitely having a great season - D-Jack has scored a TD in 6 of his last 7 games and 8 of his last 11.

15. Have you ever seen Mike Furrey and Wes Welker in the same room? - Lions WR Mike Furrey has had at least 3 receptions in every game this season, except one (against SF) where he only caught 2. Strangely enough, he has only had games of 70+ yards 3 times. Two of those three games he scored at least 1 TD. He hasn't scored a TD any other time.

The exact same thing can be said for Wes Welker - although his 2-reception game was against Chicago. Oh, and he has only 1 game with 70+ yards and he's only scored 1 TD. :D

16. Big game for Donald Driver and Greg Jennings this week against the Jets? - The Jets allowed 20 receptions to the Texans two top WR's Andre Johnson and Eric Moulds last week. Both WR's had 10 catches each. David Carr attempted 54 passes! I'm not expecting a repeat performance this week from the Jets defense, I think part of that reason is because the Texans couldn't run the ball. Their leading rusher was Wali Lundy with 11 yards. Beware Ahman Green owners.

17. On those same lines - MIN held Edgerrin James to 15 yards rushing last week despite allowing James to have a game long rush of 14 yards. Conversely, the Cardinals and Matt Leinart passed for 405 yards. This is not a fluke thing. Teams cannot run on the Vikings, but more importantly, they can pass on them - hence the exploitment of their pass defense.

MIN - This season's games. rush defense vs. pass defense, beginning with most recent

vs. ARI 17 rush yards, 405 pass yards

at MIA -3 rush yards, 254 pass yards

vs. GB 47 rush yards, 347 pass yards

at SF 42 rush yards, 91 pass yards

vs. NE 85 rush yards, 345 pass yards

at SEA 53 rush yards, 237 pass yards

vs. DET 16 rush yards, 201 pass yards

at BUF 95 rush yards, 201 pass yards

vs. CHI 51 rush yards, 274 pass yards (this week's opponent)

vs. CAR 107 rush yards, 164 pass yards

at WAS 103 rush yards, 163 pass yards

18. Target leaders - players with 10+ targets last week (consecutive games of 10+ targets in parenthesis)

15 A. Johnson (5)

15 Boldin

14 Furrey

14 Fitzgerald

13 Moulds (1st 10+ target gm this season)

13 S. Jackson - RB

12 Coles (4)

12 Roy Williams (2)

12 Owens

12 Gates - TE

11 C. Johnson (3)

11 Keyshawn

11 Berrian

11 M. Robinson (1st 10+ target gm this season)

11 Cotchery

11 B. Watson - TE

10 Holt (3)

10 S. Smith

19. Roy Williams, did you know? Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson can't say this Williams has had 5 games of 125+ yards or more, including 4 games of 135 yards or more. Three of those five games were against teams that average less than 205 passing yards per game. (BUF, MIA, STL) In case you wondered, this week's opponent, NE averages 221 pass yards per game. Don't go assuming a good game from him just yet. Four of those five games in which he had 125 yards or more were at home. The NE game is in Foxboro and the Pats have allowed only 7 passing TD's this season and only one in their last 3 games.

20. Andre Johnson can say this though - Johnson has at least 6 receptions in 9 of his 12 games this season. He also has 6 games of 9 receptions or more.

21. The Bengals shutout the Browns last week - yeah, but so what - The Bengals pass defense is averaging 326 yards per game in their last 3 games. MIN is allowing 332 pass yards per game over their last 3 games. Translation, start your Bears and Ravens WR's and QB's with confidence.

Great job as always :) Two comments, though.

Re #2: What's ironic about that? The Ravens defense is good, so you expect lesser performances against them. Am I missing something?

Re #11: Somewhat misleading that there was no 100 yard rusher - it wasn't that the Colts stopped one person, but rather each of those teams seem to employ a RBBC.

Week 1: 110 T. Barber

Week 2: HOU no 100 yd rusher 23 for 108 (4.7 ypc)

week 3: 103 M. Jones-Drew

week 4: NYJ no 100 yd rusher 37 for 135 (3.6 ypc)

week 5: 123 T. Henry

week 6: BYE

week 7: WAS no 100 yd rusher 24 for 114 (4.75 ypc)

week 8: 136 M. Bell

week 9: NE no 100 yd rusher 33 for 148 (4.5 ypc)

week 10: 109 A. Thomas

week 11: DAL no 100 yd rusher 36 for 117 as a team (3.2 ypc)

week 12: 124 B. Westbrook

Week 13: ????? BEWARE Travis Henry fans!!!

In other words, the Colts are not stopping the run just because someone didn't have 100 yards. In fact, it shows that 3 different backs can find success against this defense in a game. Allowing Barlow, Leon Washington, and Cedric Houston to combine for 100 yards says more about a defense than giving up 100 yards to LT or LJ or some other stud.

Henry's games:

Week 3: 21 for 60

Week 4: Nothing (inactive?)

Week 5: 19 for 123

Week 6: 32 for 178

Week 8: 15 for 29

Week 9: 19 for 67

Week 10: 27 for 107

Week 11: 18 for 143

Week 12: 12 for 27

IN week 8, he was the #3 rusher behind White and Young with 29 yards. In week 12, he was #2 behind Young with 27 yards and led team with 12 rushes. In every other week, he was the leading rusher in carries and yards.

5. LT for MVP? - If LaDainian Tomlinson didn't play another game this season, Robbie Gould would have to kick 12 more FG's to surpass him in total points scored for the year.

Hmmm..... just adding two and two here....Good job as always, Wheel. I look forward to Thursdays because of this.

I was pointing out that Carson Palmer rarely has bad games, but when he played BAL earlier this year, he did play poorly. Perhaps that's an indication of what he'll do tonight against them??

That was fun :)
