If you continually finish in the middle of the pack and never end up with one of the top rookies and miss the playoffs or just get in and are one and done.
This. If you have an older roster and are working hard just to sneak into the playoffs then it's time to rebuild. Take a look at the top rosters in your league and if they are loaded with good young talent then don't fool yourself that you will be able to compete.
I don't know if I would be that drastic. You can never look at someone's team and know for sure if you can compete long term. Someone looking at a division rival who had Hernandez, Harvin, nicks, and Ryan Matthews two years ago would have said " I can't compete"...and they would be dead wrong.
I think a better answer is look at your team honestly and if you can't say "yes, I can win this league THIS year," then you are in some form of rebuild because that is the goal each and every year ; to win the year you are playing in.
I think that is one of the biggest mistakes dynasty owners make in that they get so caught up with the word dynasty and think they have to have a roster of 26 year olds that they forget that to become a dynasty, you have to actually win at some point and then proceed.
I am a staunch believer in the idea that the very best dynasty teams, especially in large leagues and IDP, are the ones that have an obvious blend of old producing players and youth. You know the realistic nature of older vets better. They are typically more obtainable for cheaper prices, and you infuse youth to keep it going and being the next man up. Too much age and you obviously hit a wall and have to totally rebuild. Too much youth and I guarantee that you will find out somewhere that you're not nearly as smart at playing youtube scout as you think you are (none of us are or let's face it, we would have a real job scouting if we were that good).
