when is it time to trade LT (1 Viewer)

This question has been entering my mind recently. I drafted LT his rookie year in my keeper league and he has done no wrong and been every bit of that uber-stud RB. He has carried me into the playoffs year to year and a number of championship games. Now he is creeping closer to that age of where he might start to lose something and I'm wondering when it would be time to trade him to get the top value in return? I can trade for a young back and first round picks for sure....what do you guys thing?

If I'm a serious championship contender, I'm holding unless the package I get can still leave me a contender. If I'm not a contender, then I'm selling before it's too late, knowing that I'm not likely to get what I want for him.

I'm thinking the same thing this season. Sell while his stock is still sky high. I'm considering trade offers now. All of the data regarding # of carries would indicate that the end is near. However, LT is obviously not your avg person. He said last seasons knee inj was the first time at any level he suffered an injury to one of his knees. It's incredible, and I have as much man love for LT as any other FF manager or fan, but value is value and I have a bad feeling not only about LT, but the Chargers in general. LT was injured, he's never had a knee injury, he may be hesitant to cut like he's used to not having any history of how it "feels" to go on a recovering knee. If he comes out slow like he did last year, his value will drop overnight as the whispers of "he's lost it" creep over the FF landscape. He may very well put up #1 numbers again this year, but I'm cashing him in before the season starts.

Yeah, I agree that you ride him into the ground if you're a contender, unless someone offers you something unbelievably good. If trading him would take me out of contention, then no, I wouldn't trade him. I also agree that if you're rebuilding or maybe on the bubble, I'd consider trading him if the deal was right...

I am in the same boat, but unless you are the shark in your league and playing with a bunch of guppies, everyone else is going to know what you are up to. so unless you get an awesome offer for him, I would ride it out. I think this is his last year as the #1 overall pick, but he is going to be a top 5 back for 2 more years... top 10 for 3-4 more years, so there is still some gas in the tank to help your team out.

The trick is locating a running back or two that can replace him as that decline happnes to make a smooth transition.

in a dynasty asap imo. he still has top 5 value but he's at the age that if he falters even a bit or gets injured, his value quickly goes to bunk.

i'd be looking to trade him this year.

i agree that, if you are a contender, the package should leave your contending status intact. that's all the more reason to trade him this year. there is no reason that you can't get a nice "win now" bounty for him while also getting a bit younger. imo, this will be the last year that he will fetch a monster package. there will be a number of people in each league that think he's got 2-3 more years of premium production left. that may not be the case next year, when he will enter the year with the dreaded "30" next to his name.

the package you could get in return by trading him this year will be far greater than waiting a year, imo.

i may be speaking emotionally though. i still haven't forgiven myself for the championship i cost myself by trying to squeeze out an extra year of shaun alexander.

i think it depends on the rest of your team. are you in a win now mode or rebuild? I have had LT since he was a rookie and my team is in a win now mode.

I also drafted him as a rookie and have won several championships.

But, I did trade him away this off season.

traded LT , Cutler and Boldin for A. Peterson, Braylon Edwards and (a retired) Favre.

later traded Favre.

what made me pull the trigger was Shaun Alexander.

I just cut him in another dynasty league where I held on too long.

not sure I would have done the deal for anyone other than AD.

For dynasty leagues, the right time to trade LT2 is one year too soon. Anything else and you're flirting with failure.

Agree on being a contender and holding. Draft Hester to get there back of the future IMO. That is what I just did in my home league.

The question is and always will be is what RB do you trade him for. Outside of Adrian I dont see another guy that could last longer than Ladian in the end. I think his career length could equal Jackson, Addai and such in the end. Just a hard guy to trade unless your out of it and looking for a rebuild and can take picks plus young guys to build around.

Contract league. I was runner up last year. I have McGahee/Rice as my #2 RB. Holt/Marshall as my WR's.

I was offered / years remaining on contract:

Grant - 3

Colston - 1 I can extend him

Ward - 1 can extend him too but need to extend McGahee (maybe)

5th round next year

For

LT - 3

The thing that makes this very tempting is we can start 1-3 Rb and 2-4 WR(5 total RB/WR) . So I could filed McGahee or Grant and Colston/Holt/Marshall/Ward... oh, did I mention PPR!

Seems like a good offer but it's hard to let him go....
