All original team owners. Bunch of young goofballs that more/less grew up together and grew into close friends. At this point we've all seen our kids grow up together. Pretty crazy when i think about it.
My longest running league is a redraft league that started in 1985 (37th year). It always drafts the Saturday before the first Sunday games. This wasn't a problem until they started the Thursday games and we decided....screw it we like the Christmas Eve aspect of drafting the night before the big slate of games. The Thursday players are available and you can start them week #1 knowing how they scored. It sometimes raises draft spot and sometimes lowers it but everyone knows the facts before the draft starts. It's an interesting wrinkle to the draft that has only added to the fun. It really hurt me one year as I had Julius Thomas as my sleeper TE and he jumped up huge after his 3 TD - 100 yd game on Thursday.
Dynasty league (2005 - 16 years) always drafts the Saturday before Labor Day weekend. We found Labor Day was hard to manage around and wanted a date set in stone so everyone had plenty of time to make sure they were available. This has worked out well also. Much of the pre season has been underway so you get some idea of how things are going. I would like it closer to the start of the season but with other draft commitments and other life items this has been about as ideal as it could be. We only had one issue over the years where one out of town guy didn't show up. We called him and asked where he was and he was on the golf course. He mixed up weekends and thought the draft was the following week. He just went on auto-draft and ended up with the best finish he had ever had. We make sure he is at the draft now so that doesn't happen again....hahahaha
