When working the wire.... (1 Viewer)

I was just thinking about this question when looking over my teams. Most of my teams are filled with upside type players on bench. But I know that some owners prefer proven vets.

For example, would you take a player like Darius Heyward or a guy like Joey Galloway? Now, lets just say its a deep league that makes both of these players roster worthy. What say you? What has brought you the most success? Because I can see both ways of this argument. It seems to me it comes down to the question of if you want short term or long term proudction. Other opinions appreciated and what has brought your teams the most sucess

Really depends on your team.

im not talking dynasty since thats an easy answer. im talking your redraft 12+ team leagues. say the starting lineup is 1 qb, 2 rb, 3 wr, 1 te, and 1-2 flex spots and your bench is like 7-8 deep

As mentioned, depends on your team composition, and it also depends on what you mean by "proven".

In your example, I don't view Galloway as a proven guy anymore, but rather a one-time proven guy who is in the highlight of his career. In this case, I'd rather have a Heyward-Bey type.

Of course, if you're talking about a Kevin Walter or Jerricho Cotchery and I had a bunch of fliers, I'd go with a Walter/Cotchery.

This is what I was trying to say but you stated it better. Really, you would take a Cotchery over someone like Heyward-Bey or even say a Dez Bryant. I really do not think it has to do with team composition. I mean can you expand on this? I mean for redrafts I like to get a balance of young and old guys. Like one of my strategies, is to always select a proven stud WR and surround them with upside picks.

Like this year, my upside picks were Nicks, Garcon, etc. Nicks has worked out thus far. While Garcon has been very quiet. I know many people use this strategy with RB's. Draft 1 stud and wait later for a flier. Or completely abandon drafting RB's until the late rds. I have seen PPR strategies where they draft consecutive WR's and mix in a QB and TE before they take their first RB

Here's my formula.

Have players at every position you are comfortable starting.

Roster players from the waiver wire who, if their situation improves, can upsurp your starters or provide startable tradebait.

Everyone else is a bye week filler.

Along with this, I tend to draft more upside after most of my starters are set. Then during the season I use free agency to try and get guys who are currently producing more than any of the players I already have.

This is exactly why I picked up Keiland Williams this week. I have a strong stable of RBs and this guy could all of a sudden be a starting RB with not much competition. I figure that Portis will get hurt at some point and I may package him with someone else at that time to upgrade elsewhere.

I'd take literally any player with any amount of upside over a guy like Joey Galloway, Deion Branch, or Justin Gage. You know what you're getting with those guys, which is literally nothing FF-wise. You could never start them, they're just roster fillers or trade throw-ins. A guy like Heyward-Bey or Amendola could be just as worthless as the vets I mentioned above, but there's a chance that they'll be much better & could be startable. I'd always take the upside if it's a bench guy.

Now if my WR corps is riddled by injuries, I may have to pick up a guy to start this week. In that case, if I'm faced with picking up Demaryus Thomas or Nate Washington- I'd take Washington. Thomas may be better for the season, but I haven't seen him enough to know how he'll be used or how healthy he is. I know for sure Washington is a healthy #1 option on his team, so I'll take & start him.

It is a nice formula and I agree with it but from a practical standpoint it is hard to achieve that in a really competitive league this early on. If you have a really good draft and all of your picks work out a set it and forget it lineup happens but usually I exit the draft with a spot or 2 where I either didn't get the players I wanted, ended up with several lesser players who all look alike for a position, or draft picks just plain do not work out. I think in general if my team is going well I will go for people who I think can become better than one of my starters if their situations improve and sit on them. (I did this with Meachem last year) but otherwise my immediate concern is picking up the now people who I think can help me win now (or keep someone else from doing so).

im in a 20 team league/ 30 players a team.

Ive acquired players such as

Fendi Onobun (Who;s been talked about in this forum)

Joique Bell (Signed by PHI)

Hank Baskett

Limas Sweed.

So the answer to your question is depth. only IMO (Because of a 20 team league)

:excited: This is pretty much what I do. The first couple of weeks is when I build my bench and replace any starters who aren't performing.

pssh, i build my bench through out the whole season. only the first couple of weeks? puhleease....key injuries and under performing starters occur through out the whole year. its definitely harder in deep leagues. bc i always am deciding between a few players to choose from. if i pick the wrong player my opponent or other teams in the league will be quick to snatch them up.
