Yahoo half an hour before first pitch? Nobody really knows who's going to play until lineups are submitted by the manager, unless it's something that the Mgr. has put out in the media.

Yeah he's right. Yahoo will show a ^ next to the player if they are starting and an X if they are not. You wont get much notice for the reasons that YM just said.

The only thing you can really project is who will start in a given team's platoon that day by looking at that day's pitcher. I've noticed off days for catchers often seem to come when a night game is followed by a day game the next day, which day the catcher has off varies. Try to identify what players you own that may not start everyday, identify their start time, and set a reminder to check the lineup (I was able to sub-in Billy Butler for Tavares today, had my reminder set on my work pc for 12:25 to check all of the 12:30 and 1:00 starts) shortly before their game's.

So along these same lines, do most carry a backup catcher so as to maximize the 162 games at the catcher position as it seems they miss the most games? Or do you just punt those 15-20 games or so in lieu of a more versatile bench player?

If I have the roster space I try to stream a catcher to fill those off days, but not necessarily on the specific off days. Most roto's have a 162 game limit, on days when the team is off I'll add a catcher on a different team that has a game, hope he doesn't get the day off, and start him. Russ Martin has today off, I added Dioner Navarro for today with the roster spot that opened up on my roster with Pedro going to the DL. In the end I usually end up with slightly less than 162 games played from my C position, but I usually come close and I don't have to sweat out trying to find out if my C is playing at the last minute...and if he isn't making sure my other guy's game hasn't started yet; too much stress for the rewards. Basically I want to maximize the potential production from each position, but I don't feel rostering an extra catcher is justified.

Thanks. I was thinking along the same lines of starting the backup catcher on my main catcher's off days, but I hadn't thought about picking up a catcher every now and then instead of always carrying a 2nd catcher. Both require a free roster spot, but your idea allows for more flexibility.

i did it for awhile last year til i needed the spot,my 2nd catcher wasn't playing as well as originally, and i ran out of patience running to the computer to check lineup status. (no hitter limits in my league) it works best with primary catcher in east or central time zone and and backup further west, so you can check the lineups. :excited: still not a perfect system, since all teams travel around the country some.

Also keep a close eye on rotoworld.com, this site updates very quickly with injury information. I use this site for all fantasy news it quickly became one of my most visited sites when I found it 2-3 years ago.

I will platoon a catcher. I want to fill every cat possible.

Lineups are set an hour before the game. You can check MLB.com or numerous other sites for the official starting lineups.
It would be nice to set up a database of places to look prior to that, though. For Reds players, check John Fay's blog.

This guy typically would have the lineups posted before Fay in the past, but now that the Cincinnati Post is dead, it doesn't look like he's blogging as hard core this season.
