Where do the Florida Panthers relocate to? (1 Viewer)

Las Vegas, Seattle and Quebec City (again) are typically mentioned as primary candidates for expansion.

If you want to keep them in the east, then Quebec or Hamilton.

Or move them to add an 8th team to the Central (Kansas City) or the Pacific (Seattle).

Portland and Seattle seem like good choices. Any other possibilities?
Agree about Portland and especially Seattle. A few more no-research spitballs:

Houston (Aeros did well 40 yrs ago ... how about now?)

Indianapolis

Kansas City

Hamilton, ON

Quebec City, QC (were the Nordiques poorly supported in the early 90s?)

Halifax, NS? Or somewhere else in the Maritimes?

I guess the existence of the Blue Jackets mucks it up for Cleveland and Cincinnati. Always wondered why those two never had teams after the Barons left Cleveland.

Hamilton seems like a nice option but I believe they'd have to pay both the Sabres and Leafs due to the proximity to their respective NHL markets.

Also I'm pretty sure Bettman hates Jim Balsillie, who would probably be involved in a Hamilton move.

That said, I was on the pre-sale list for Hamilton Predators season tickets a few years ago and was number like 4,000 in line for tickets. Can you imagine how much :moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag: you can make scalping those tickets??

Tons of options already mentioned.

What about Milwaukee?

I bet even Norfolk would even be better than Miami. At the very least, they'd be the only game in town from the big 4.

Halifax metro area is only about 400k.

Toronto could support a second team and I think that would make much more sense than another warm weather location or smaller Canadian locale. In years past I would have said the same thing about Detroit, but the whole "Hockeytown" bandwagon has shrunk as the teams success has waned.

Love the Milwaukee idea. If you count the Packers, the city (or severely expanded metro area) would become a four-sport location. Cool.

Baltimore has a very anti-DC issue in just about every area of life. However, from what I understand, they do support the Capitals. Not sure if it's enough support, though, to support their own team. Nor do I know if it's so much support that you can't get enough fans to switch.

But, if Baltimore wasn't so close to DC, I think it would be a possibility.

Point of order here but the panthers play closer to Ft Lauderdale then Miami.

Obviously 7 K is urine poor atrendance. That said 50% of the fan base they are shooting for won't be in south Florida for another few weeks. I'd be willing to wager the attendance will pick up once te snowbirds from the northeast and canada arrive.

Now can snowbirds add enough attendance to justify a NHL franchise? They have in the past at times.

I'm surprised Tampa does as well as they do. Anywhere but Florida (or Arizona) would be better for the Panthers.

Hockey in Arizona (particularly with arena in the middle of nowhere) is a joke. They should have been moved out last year. Think they just got a new owner for the 2nd time in probably a year. Franchise just bleeds money.

Let's get a team in the Dakotas. Can't be worse than Miami, Phoenix, or Vegas.

Cite de Quebec or Hamilton would be my call, but the Panthers aren't going anywhere. They have new ownership, 13 years left on the lease, and they have a contract (somehow) via Rogers.

I'm not a huge hockey fan, so I may be wrong on this, but I've heard more than a few talking heads say that the NHL needs to pare down a few teams - not move some poorly attended one (or bring in new teams).

Is this true? Or are these just idiot non-hockey people not knowing what they are talking about? Are there other places that could sell out an arena every game?

I do know that some of these cities they are trying to force hockey teams on are not supporting them too well. Is the NHL just looking at the wrong cities?

no it's not true.

there are markets out there that could support these teams better, but a big reason why these markets don't do better is because the product on the ice is consistently terrible.

how many fans can you get in a non-traditional market anywhere to shell out money for a team that never makes the playoffs?

the league will expand at some point, but nobody is seriously considering/pushing for contraction.

It's really sad. Hockey is an awesome live sport. But South Florida has some of the worst sports fans in the country. But the Panthers had a decent and loyal fan base for a long time.....but the losing has taken it's toll.

I was fully prepared to explain how the Florida Panther population is thriving in the middle of the state with the additional granted land and has no current need for relocation. Had no idea there was a hockey team south of Tampa.

If Milwaukee is even in consideration, the team will have to work something out with the new Bucks owners for some kind of stadium. I doubt the Panthers are going to fund anything though. Having a team here might bring the suburban people into the city depending on the location of the arena. But, I don't think Milwaukee is a big enough hockey town. I'd like to say Madison but they have the Badgers competing with them.

Hartford is the only solution.

Ya know, I got a buddy from the Hammer and he's always hoping for a team. Currently, Toronto keeps the league out of there because it's too close. I have seen some reports saying a 4 team expansion would be Vegas, Seattle, Quebec City, and another Toronto team. That would put the distance question to rest. Not sure how good Hamilton's arena is. I would imagine Air Canada would love another full time tenant. If only one team is going to move, I'd like to see it go in the Western Conference so the playoff set up isn't so ridiculous.
