I can't believe that Maddux has a good shot at being #3 in WINS for his career.

Lets hypothetically say he ends up with 401 WINS.

Where would you rank him ALL TIME for pitchers?

Best Ever?

Top 5?

Top 10?

Top 20?

Current List

Young 511

Johnson 417

Alexander 373

Mathewson 373

Galvin 365

Spahn 363

Nichols 361

Clemens 354

MADDUX 349

Unfortunately a lot of people are going to tend to remember the tail end of his career where he was just a mediocre pitcher, however I think he was one of the all-time best pitchers, certainly either #1 or #2 in the past 40 years.

Over a 15 year stretch from 1988-2002, he never had an era over 3.50 and he pitched over 200 innings every single year (Except 2002 where he pitched 199 1/3). He went out there every day and was outstanding on almost every start. 1994 & 1995 were two of the best pitched seasons ever.

I'm a big fan

Agreed, I would have liked him to have another ring, or even better post season stats.Usually when comparing best of the best, post season/clutch performances are often used as a separating method.11-14 3.34ERA(5-3 3.48 NLDS)(4-8 3.80 NLCS)(2-3 2.09 WS)

in order to get to 400 he needs to win 51 more games. He has won an ave of 14 games the last 3 years. At that rate its just over 3.6 years to get there.

I am not sure he has 3.5 years left. He is a 5 inning .500 pitcher now.

He is one of the greats all time but SD is going to need better pitching out of their #3 pitcher to compete in the pitching rich NL West.

Its going to be close but he may be 1.6 years short and looking at 377 wins. Good enough for #3

Which is really unfortunate. I think that people would look at him more realistically if Clemens hadn't been juicing. When Clemens and Maddux were both in their prime, there were quite a few arguments about which one was better and whether or not one of them was the greatest of all time. But when Maddux's performance became more average due to age, Clemens pulled away thanks to the roids. I think Maddux's legacy took a hit because of that.FWIW, I think that Maddux retires after this season. He has dropped a few hints and I just get the feeling that this is the end of the line for Mad Dog.

Maddux is my favorite player and it will be a very sad day for me when he hangs them up.

There's a great article on Maddux in the "ESPN the Magazine", the one with McFadden on the cover. He states in there that this will PROBABLY be his last season. It's a great read on one the the best analytical, cerbral pitchers of our time.

A quote from it "when I was coming up pitchers worried about the ball moving up, down, in or out, now they ask if they were hitting 92-93 mph".

I too am a big fan. He'd be a great pitching coach, but I don't believe he wants to give up his "secrets".

I like using WARP-3, just because it's really easy to compute, and it's adjusted for era. It's not perfect, but fun to use.

WARP-3 per season:

Maddux: 7.52

Spahn: 6.15

W. Johnson: 9.43

Seaver: 7.24

Clemens: 8.63

Cy Young: 7.83

Alexander: 7.51

P. Martinez: 6.79

Mathewson: 7.37

I still think Maddux, despite all the accolades, is extremely, extremely underrated. I strongly discount Clemens' numbers because of steroid use, and Pedro was at one time the most dominant pitcher many of us have ever seen.

Amazing, amazing career.

That was a great article. Loved the story about him hitting the blind catcher's mitt. Unbelievable control.

Maddux from '92-'98 and Pedro from '97-'03 were just unreal. It's going to be a long time, if ever, that somebody can match those kinds of numbers for 7 year periods like that:
