Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

Pip’s Invitation:

Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses (US/UK)
(new song)

First GNR song I ever heard and still my favorite. When I took this in the Jukebox Draft, I said that Appetite "brought hard rock back into pop culture after the '80s did its best to kill it." The appeal of this song, with its plaintive vocal from Axl and explosive guitar from Slash, had a lot to do with that.

Songs updated: Suite Judy is surging but so is Welcome to the Jungle and The Weight. Keep an eye on Bohemian Rhapsody though. This has been a Queen dominated draft and it wouldn't surprise me if that song crept to the top in the final rounds. Adios Golden Earring.

New Binky the Doormat:

The Needle And The Damage Done - Neil Young (Neil is Canadian)
(new song)

What I said in my Neil countdown:

36. The Needle and the Damage Done (Harvest, 1972)
Neil's feelings about and commentary on the seedier side of the counterculture didn't just surface during the "ditch trilogy." It was right there on his most popular album. Neil was witnessing his close friend Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse deteriorate from heroin addiction, and this song was his reaction. "I sing the song because I love the man / I know that some of you don't understand." No one wanted to hear this message in 1972, but Neil knew it had to be heard. He wrapped it in a gorgeous melody so people would listen, and they did, making this one of his most beloved songs.

When we exchanged lists, DrIanMalcolm told me he thought there was one song that would be a consensus #1. I said "Do you mean Bohemian Rhapsody?" He said, "no, that never entered my mind." He was talking about The Weight. But yeah, my money would have been on Bohemian Rhapsody. I know there's at least one #1 vote for it (not me or DrIan) if the participant does what I think they will do.

And yes, The Weight was the one I was thinking of.

Will scroll through a bit of this, but I don't expect to respond to any of it save the last page, given it's just been too long. :)

27 reasons to not spoil

1- Some titles always intrigue me, so lets check this one out. Its got great musicianship, Steve Winwoods vocals are on form and i dont have a clue wtf is going on lol. I started a thread here 20 years ago stating i didnt understand Jazz. Now i dont even know if this is Jazz, but thats where wiki parked it in among prog and psychedelic rock. Ive always felt im missing something and am jealous of those who get something from it. Do substances need to be consumed?

2- I knew the name but couldnt figure out where. He scored the Game of Thrones theme as it turns out. Interesting that this from Westworld was rated so high on a list. Would love to hear the drafters voice here. I mean maybe its a familiarity thing, but I would have chosen the GOT one over this but Ive never watched Westworld. German? From Iranian heritage. I assumed British of Indian heritage. Never assume.

3 - Was hoping for an Olivia Newton John cover lol. This was recorded first, but Im a Rush rookie. I get this more than Traffic, but its got a little bit in common with long synth numbers that Jarre, Oldfield, Vangelis and others do. Then the vocals kick in at the 5 minute mark. Different. Had to make sure i had it in the right speed. Dont hate it. Why do some people? Maybe I should or shouldnt check out more.

4 - Unusual number from this unique band. It was the follow up to their biggest US hit, Burning Down the House. That hasnt had a mention, among many great Talking Heads song that hasnt, but this one has at least 3 votes.

5 - Dont need to shout the resumes of both these artists. Not my style, but na interesting collaboration none the less. Much respect

6 - I was hoping we wouldnt have to wait until the top 5 until we saw Kraftwerk, but here we are. Will be interested in how many more are to come, but we have more fecking BTS at this stage. Tour De France is an interesting choice. Peak Kraftwerk is seen as 76-81 and this is after that period.

7- Is this where we post all the Black Betty memes i saw in the 1977 thread? Loved em. Heres a different take. A bit more rocky and modern than the Ram Jam version.

8 - Glad someone else picked this. If it wasnt obvious by now, i love to hear different things. The weirder it is, the more interested i am. Doesnt mean i like it, but vocals guitar, bass and drums when there are so much more sounds come from other instruments. Anyway, Birthday. Such a strange sound. But that vocal was so unique . I had read about this strange band from Iceland in the music papers. I was getting all the UK publications on import at the time. They were almost unified in exclaiming this band was amazing and the next big thing etc, but they say that every issue lol

9 - This song is just stunning. Sia first came to attention as guest vocalist with on one of Trip Hops leading bands, Zero 7. They used guest vocalists all the time, but were most successful when using Sia. She tried to eek out a solo career with moderate success until Chandelier and its amazing video came along. It reached #8 in 2014, but the charts have been bullshirt sunce at least 2010, maybe earlier.

10- This song is so amazing its scary. Once I knew the UK/US combos were allowed, I had a decision to make. Do the whole list based on them or only use it once. The later approach is what I chose. That was a tough choice, but not really. Turn on the Bright Lights was strongly regarded and it helped when one of my best friends raved about it. Had to listen now, and damn. I was blown away. NYC was the one that stood out as so beautiful. Paul Banks sounds so glorious. I think my record is 24 listens on repeat. One day i will beat that.

11 - This is one of the more bizarre collaborations of all time. Suzi Quatro had 6 singles chart between 41 and 100 on the billboard charts, but in the UK and Australia, she was a star. 9 top 20 hits and 2 number 1s in the UK, 10 top 20s in Australia, with 3 #1’s.

Chris Norman was lead singer of Smokie, who had 9 top 20 hits in the UK and 7 in Australia. Their biggest hit was Livin Next Door to Alice, which made #25 in the US.

Despite their lack of hits separately together, Stumblin In made #4 in the US

12 - So glad this got chosen and Giorgio got some due recognitiom. This would have been my exact choice for Italy, except i discovered I could take Daft Punk with Giorgio.

13 - Fried Chicken lol. “Freddie Mercury at some point introduced words that had nothing to do with the song for fun, as suggested by his partner, Jim Hutton. Some other made-up words during rehearsals were "one shrimp, one prawn, one clam, one chicken" and some profanity”

Welcome back! No worries, what you did is way more interesting than following an internet thread closely, as interesting as it may be,

Andy Dufresne:
2- Dr. Ford- Ramin Djawadi
(new artist)

2- I knew the name but couldnt figure out where. He scored the Game of Thrones theme as it turns out. Interesting that this from Westworld was rated so high on a list. Djawadi has done quite a bit of stuff. I like when a composer, like John Williams, goes the leimotif route for their compositions.

I'm a defender of the Westworld series and I think there's a lot more interesting things to listen to than GoT.

Anthony Hopkins performance is just fantastic and this piece sonically follows his character's arc.

Oye Como Va -- Santana (DrIanMalcolm):

Okay.

So I'm back. And I want to talk about Oye Como Va.

Because we're all middle-aged here, which means we're all familiar with mixtapes.

And Oye Como Va is the G.O.A.T. of mixtapes.

Why? Because it transitions you out of trouble. Because it blends with every single type of music you'd want to put on a mixtape. Because it goes well on just about every kind other than perhaps one you'd make for someone you were in a relationship with. Because it made every single mixtape I'd ever made better, without question.

It's the way that keyboard comes in, so direct and straightforward, and then the rolling R with the vocalist singing "Sabor..." (flavor). Then the kettle drums, and then Santana's beautiful guitar. After that first verse, you get the first real solo, and those kettle drums just keep going and you can definitely hear maracas shaking, backing behind Santana, along with the deep bass, and Carlos just takes over from there. And then you get after that the keyboards going berserk while the drums let loose, and now you're just in a rave, man; I saw them at the Houston rodeo and they just kill it.

Then everything drops, and you're just left with the same rhythm, and then the lyrics again - which aren't much, but they're not there to do anything but transition to the good stuff anyway, which, again, I'm talking Carlos.

It's a mid-tempo chugging song that has just enough Latin flavor to go with contemporary music and a classic sound that mixes with the typical K-Rock type sound from ages past. It's almost danceable, so it lives in the same village with the paso doble or a cha-cha, but the driving guitar and the big percussion can hang with the Stones, Skynyrd, the Allmans and Bob Seger, and it's got enough of a swing that you can drop it in EWF or James Brown. You can stack it next to jazz, to the blues, to salsa, to Caribbean rhythms, to yacht rock, to mellow sounds, to deep tracks.

It moves, and swivels, and drives.

You've got a classic rock tune and need to shift it to more contemporary? Oye Como Va.
A fast-moving pop tune of today and need to back it up to the 70s? Oye Como Va.
Something with a bit of jazz to it and you want to go more guitar oriented? Oye Como Va.
More world-sounding music and you need to get back to the heartland? Oye Como Va.
Somehow you want to jump from the Jeff Beck Group to trip-hop? Oye Como Va.

Oye Como Va is the mayonnaise on every sandwich.
The straw that stirs the drink.
The shoes that instantly feel good when you put them on.
Your utility tool.
That Chanel suit.
A cast-iron skillet.
Your child's footie PJs.
An 80-degree beach day.

The Mariano Rivera of mixtapes.

Oye Como Va.

I was out at brunch

Can you describe the brunch?

(Sorry, it's a crossover from KP's and 80's movie thread. I couldn't help it.)

I had to quit that thread. Breakfast Club reference?
We are in the top 20 and getting to some movies I know you love.......
and the discourse improved immensely.
100%. Temperatures might rise toward the end again, but the last couple days have been good.

Nice afternoon so I decided I should listen to today's playlist while hiking with the dog in the state park behind my house. My back was hurting a bit, so I took a muscle relaxer first, which I blame for my predicament. You see, thanks to my loopiness, I grabbed my wireless headphones instead of the wired ones. Only 30 minutes in, I had to stop at the creek and wash my hands (had to do with Milo eating half of a stuffed toy last night - no need for further details) and my right headphone fell out into the water and got swept down the stream. I thought about trying to chase it but even in my goofy state, saw the bad outcomes that could ensue (blood thinners and slippery rocks don't mix). Anyway, I guess I won't be able to listen to the rest of the playlist till tomorrow morning - Amazon says my new earbuds will be here by 6 am.

I need a laugh/cry combo reaction, so I chose smile.

Smart to bring it here to our safe thread :)

I've really, really wanted to do something clever in terms of preview today. But I'm in a bad mood and also sorta brain dead. I'll still try as I hate to go out with a whimper. Maybe the excitement of the septuple-up tomorrow will be enough.

I knew 27 songs today not counting my own but counting repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #4, not including my own or Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Gold Dust Woman, which are known to be on my list:

Like a Hurricane -- Neil Young (Zamboni)
Welcome to the Jungle -- Guns N' Roses (AAABatteries)
The Needle and the Damage Done -- Neil Young (Binky)
It Makes No Difference (live) -- The Band (Eephus)
YYZ -- Rush (jwb). All of side 1 of Moving Pictures has been picked. Can we say that about any other album side that has more than one song?
Layla -- Derek and the Dominoes (Worrierking). A little surprising that this hadn't surfaced yet, but the album is full of gems and many of us are sticking to one song per artist.
Helplessly Hoping -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (Simey)
The Chain -- Fleetwood Mac (Val Rannous)
Life During Wartime -- Talking Heads (KarmaPolice)
Panama -- Van Halen (Hawks64)
Eruption / You Really Got Me -- Van Halen (Just Win Baby)
Three Little Birds -- Bob Marley (Doc Oc)
Fade to Black -- Metallica (Raging Weasel)
T.N.T. -- AC/DC (Titusbramble)
Lift Me Up -- Yes (Simsarge). If the best song from the Trevor Rabin era of Yes isn't Changes, it's this.
Cuts Like a Knife -- Bryan Adams (Andy)
Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen (Zegras11)
Fantasy -- Aldo Nova (Doug B)
Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile) -- Santana (Chaos34)
Truth Hits Everybody -- The Police (Hov34)

Tomorrow we have an artist with a septuple-up. Will it be Queen putting this all but out of reach, or will another artist make a surge?
That’s going to be 203 artist points for some act. Kind of like when point values are tripled on Family Feud and the family getting smoked all game finally guesses the #1 answer and comes back to win.

Won’t be my artist, I’m pretty sure.

Wow. Doc Ock, we are not worthy :tebow:

You can either thank me, or curse me for Metallica
I will say they are surprising me with how high they are scoring. I like Metallica, they just us usually don’t seem to get drafted this much around here.

I included this comment when I sent my contest entry to Krista:

(12 would have been my preferred number, as I think CSN(Y) and Metallica also have a good shot.)

I chose ... poorly.
