Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

I'm still in the midst of catching up from the last 10 hours (work, gah), but I just wanted to thank everyone here for making this a fantastic countdown. I love the variety in picks, but even more so I love the positive nature of the comments and how curious everyone is to learn about new artists/songs and share what they love. Can't complain about a single thing except maybe Binky continuing to post spoilers, but I figure because it's Binky the "don't post spoilers" part was translated as "please post spoilers," so all good.

Seriously, this has been a huge pleasure despite all the work involved and despite the timing hitting me at a particularly difficult IRL time.
Love you

Based on OH's work schedule, we could theoretically get to ATL for a Monday show or Chicago for a Sunday one...hmmmm...

Not LA on the 12th or 14th????

Now that would be bonkers.

:excited:

His schedule changed such that he has Sundays and Mondays off now, which was something I'd pushed for but now realize how many great shows are on Thursdays (which he used to have)! So the LA dates didn't work. Would absolutely be a blast to come down there and see a show of someone with you, though. Easy trip for us.

Too bad about the LA dates. I'd love to hang out with you guys for a show. I'll definitely keep it in mind should there ever be a possibility of that happening. Also, things might happen between now and October. You never know.

Yeah, you know my tastes really well (and his, though that's secondary, hahaha), so if you ever see something that we might like and are going yourself, let me know. Would be amazing to meet you.

Music-thread people cornhole to watch Sunday football in Vegas sometime? :excited:

Wow, that would be something else. Potentially, yes. I'm able to drive there. I'm afraid I won't be any fun gambling or drinking, though. But that would be cool.

Yeah, you know my tastes really well (and his, though that's secondary, hahaha), so if you ever see something that we might like and are going yourself, let me know. Would be amazing to meet you.

Will keep my eyes open and ear to the ground. Likewise about the amazing part. If you're not averse to San Diego, I'll keep my Spidey senses looking for shows there, too. There are certain acts OH might like that hit San Diego and not necessarily LA. San Diego is the birth of screamo and some really wild/cool '90s alternative stuff, which is why I say that.

eta* Not that OH likes screamo, but you know what I'm saying. There's a creative flair around there whereas LA bands tend to shoot for the moon in terms of popularity a little more than San Diego.

I haven't had time to scour tomorrow's line-up. Doing a quick scan right now, I see:

- @Andy Dufresne chooses a song that will make @otb_lifer happy.
- @Hawks64 revisits one of his favorite artists from the US countdown.
- @krista4 selects a song that has already been selected, but by a slightly different artist.
- @Mummy4 works Todd in, somehow.
- @landrys hat 's number is eight.
- @MAC_32 selects a song that I coldly and heartlessly banned from the British Isles countdown.
- @KarmaPolice continues his one-man campaign.

San Diego is even better than LA for these purposes, IMO.

@Mrs. Rannous Spiderbait's Ghost Rider in the Sky isn't available on Spotify, nor is the Ghost Rider Soundtrack, so I picked a replacement.
Thank you, but I'd rather have nothing than that as a replacement. It's not even adjacent to what I picked the song for.

The Johnny Cash cover would be okay.

This sounds pretty ****ty toward Hawks. If people chose songs that weren’t on Spotify (which happened a lot with a couple of artists much bigger than Spiderbait), we asked them to send a replacement. If he didn’t have that, then he chose a cover. Complaining about that later isn’t fair to him and the work he puts into this. The “it’s not even adjacent” part isn’t his problem to work out. If you choose something that can’t be on the playlist, then either send a replacement or, if you’re sensitive to it, say at the time that you don’t want your song to be in the rotation.

Not a complaint at all. Nothing is really adjacent to the Spiderbait version. I picked Cash because it's pretty difficult to object to The Man In Black.
I also have no way of knowing what is, or is not, on Spotify.

Hawks, you are doing yeoman's work, and I appreciate you.

- @Andy Dufresne chooses a song that will make @otb_lifer happy

this oughtta be good.

getting matched on Peas n' Carrots & Harry Lime were both pleasant surprises, not to mention Chilliwack, who were my first out, but i figured they'd get one or two shouts.

Los Fabulosos were much more expected, and i think we may see at least a third vote for them.

i do think Scorch, Eeph, you n' OH are probably closest to me thus far ... kinda.

PS - "Get Down, Make Love" currently playing on the Spotty, and i'm outta skips ... now, IF this actually shows up on the countdown, i will eat my left boot and provide vid of it right here.

(Freddie had alotta Gorman Thomas in him)

My dad just surprised me with Jason Isbell tickets. June at Hill Auditorium. Lets go! Now he likes Isbell more than me but it's an artists he and my mom like, my wife likes, my sister and BIL like, etc. It should be a fun show and I bet my dad has 10+ people coming.
I saw him last summer. It’s a great show.

So when it comes to no replacement given, I pick the song I like the most. And tbf I told everyone I might just start throwing DMB songs in there instead :lmao:

I love the Men At Work version of this song, by far my favorite from them, but I think Colin's vocal on his solo acoustic version is even more stunning. If I had it to do over, though*, I would have taken "Overkill" by Men At Work and then selected Colin's solo "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" (not taken in the countdown). Just devastatingly beautiful.

*Please god no.

YES!

dig seeing it this high (Binky, low) in the countdown ... it's that finger snappin', i tell ya

Slaintè, @Andy Dufresne 🍻
It's the kind of song that makes white people think maybe, just maybe, they could be as groovy on stage as black people.

Chuco's Cumbia - Los Lobos (Mexico/US)
(new song)

I been a fan of Los Lobos since the mid 80's, but didn't pay any attention to their new stuff after the mid 90s or so. I finally got a chance to see them at one of the local casinos in 2019. Our casinos are filled with Houston patrons, as there is no gaming in Texas and we are 130 miles away here in SWLA. Apparently the casino people thought they were making some kind of outreach to the large Houston Hispanic community by scheduling Los Lobos, but the concertgoers were one of the most eclectic groups I've ever seen, hippies, cowboys, Cajuns, young hipsters, etc. A few days before the show I checked online to see what songs they were playing on the tour. The only one I didn't recognize was this one, sung entirely in Spanish (most of their stuff is in English). I thought the song was kind of catchy, but paid no attention to it. When they played the tune at the show, most people didn't know it and it was looking like a flop, a chance for a beer or bathroom break. But a few folks near the front started dancing and clapping. Within about 30 seconds the whole place was dancing, hipsters, cowboys and all. The song was infectious, and it kept getting rowdier as they continued. It was nearly a riot when they finished and Cesar Rosas, the singer, was both befuddled and smiling, with a "where did that come from" look on his face. The cheer at then end of this song was the biggest of the night and I doubt 10% of the crowd had ever heard it before. Cumbia is a style of music from Columbia and Los Lobos liked it and have recorded a few like this.

@jwb this song is my ringtone.....I've never done songs, always done default sounds.....so a week or so ago I downloaded an app, searched Metallica, and chose this one.....now when my phone rings I think to myself.....why didn't I choose this one for the list?! Iconic 80's metal song....great choice!

I also did Shine on you Crazy Diamond for my alarm.....so I start my day to that......my kids have no idea how cool I am.:geek:

I had NO idea that “Dance Me To the End of Love” was a Leonard Cohen song. For years I’ve been listening to Madeleine Peyroux’s version, which I love, but I figured it was a 30s jazz standard like most of her work. I’ve never heard Cohen’s version before. Very interesting!

Here is Madeleine’s version:

Yeah, that one is great, too. I really didn't appreciate his talent with Men At Work were a thing. Unlike rock, my taste in music sucked when I was younger.
