Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

The Ooga Chaka addition to the standard Hooked On A Felling is one of the greatest add ons ever

Am I the only one who hates this?

Sorry, thumper rule?

:towelwave:

I love the song, and actually prefer Blue Swede's vocals to BJ Thomas's, but I just can't get past that ooga chaka crap.

so, maybe 30 cumulative seconds of OOOOOOGGGAAA CHAKA is annoying, but a 20+ minute noodling of one note are "ok"?

The Gift (Instrumental Version) - The Velvet Underground
(new song)

(Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/7bpkYq3xHaIB2CdLzP0c17)

When I first heard this on White Light/White Heat, I instantly liked it immensely. It's basically 8 minutes of the velvets doing a droning / fuzzy... something, while John Cale tells a pretty strange story of a hopeless/possessive romantic with a tragic (and funny) twist.

And while that version is fine, I was really drawn to the music, which again, is like a droning, fuzzy, chaotic mess. The stereo mix 100% seperates the vocals and the music, so I found myself playing it with the balance turned to just the music side. Later they released the "super deluxe" version of the album, which included what I always wanted - just the instrumental.

I listen to this weekly, as it's on my fairly short gym playlist that doesn't change much. I like the little nuances in it with the bass, guitars, etc, all while droning on and on...

Here's the version with lyrics. It's a pretty dark story that Lou wrote in college. Kinda shows where Reed was going with his lyrics.

Mystery Achievement - The Pretenders (US/UK)
(new song)

This is a remarkable song and performance that transcends genre. Every note and every decision that went into the production is perfect. For my money this may be Chrissie Hynde's best vocal and the best performances by bassist Pete Farndon and guitarist James Honeyman-Scott (RIP to both).

Yea, this is fantastic. I picked Brass in Pocket yesterday - Pretenders scoring some nice points here in the top 10.

SOAPBOX:

how anybody could come away from that first album and NOT see this as the unquestioned standout is baffling to me ... no great knock to the other tunes (except for "BiP", which i think are pure dreck - sorry for the THUMP!), but more of tremendous praise for Mystery Achievement 🙌

really loved how Stone Roses called it back in "Ressurection" - it's a severely underrated classic.

I'm the first to take Magic Power? Really? :headbang:

When I'm feeling down this song really does pick me up. Anytime it comes up I get a bit teary eyed. I am right now. Uh, I mean...YOU'RE CRYING!!

Live at US Festival...

Chilliwack is Hockey ... but this tune is game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals in triple O.T. (if they even do that anymore) Hockey.

It's a good tune. There used to be a poster here on FBG named Mystery Achiever. She is an Eagles fan, so maybe you've seen her post in that thread in the past. She's a nice person, and I liked reading her commentary on stocks. I haven't seen her around in a long time. I hope she is doing well.

So I normally don’t discuss my own picks but Ghalia Volt is a Belgian girl, early 20s, who became obsessed with the blues, so much so that she moved to Mississippi to play with the masters. And now I am obsessed with her.
There's a lot of Bonnie Raitt in that song. She clearly knows what she's doing.

Magic Power - Triumph
(new song)

As I mentioned before, one of Triumph's goals was to put positive thoughts into the heads of teens who had negative ones. This song is the epitome of that.
It's just... Beautiful, man!

You're thinkin' it over but you just can't sort it out
Do you want someone to tell you what they think it's all about
Are you the one and only who's sad and lonely, reachin' for the top
Well the music keeps you goin' and it's never gonna stop
Never gonna stop
Never gonna, never gonna, never gonna stop

The world is full of compromise, and infinite red tape
But the music's got the magic, it's your one chance for escape
So turn me on - turn me up - it's your turn to dream
A little magic power makes it better than it seems

I'm young, I'm wild and I'm free
I got the magic power of the music in me

... back at my empanada jernt for my afternoon iced coffee - more Tom Jones!

"Are You Gonna Go My Way" ... better than LK - yeah, i said it.

I knew 28 songs today, not counting my own but counting repeats, tied for the most so far.

Known-to-me favorites not counting my own:

Southern Cross -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (DrIanMalcolm)
Lunatic Fringe -- Red Rider (Zamboni)
Roundabout (live) -- Yes and Geddy Lee (Sullie). Lemme guess, Sullie put the Yes-only version of Roundabout on his Brit list?
Silly Love Songs -- Wings (Higgins). I predicted this as Krista's top Paul solo song and it didn't make her solo Beatles countdown at all. I was not aware of the full extent of her saxo-phobia. It's one of my favorite Paul solo songs, and I have fond memories of hearing it on the car radio as a kid.
Magic Power -- Triumph (Andy)
Unknown Legend -- Neil Young (Landryshat)
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) -- John Lennon and Yoko Ono (Westerberg)
November Rain -- Guns 'N Roses (Mt. Man)
Manic Depression -- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (OH)
Mirror in the Bathroom -- The Beat (Chaos34)
Life During Wartime -- Talking Heads (Binky)
Children of the Sun -- Billy Thorpe (Simsarge). Like Eyes of a Stranger, this is a song I would hear on FM radio but never had any idea of who the artist was or where they were from. I only learned that when for shtick purposes in GP4 I drafted four different songs named "Children of the Sun" at the same time. At the time Spotify only had a re-recorded version of this, not the original. Dunno if that's still the case.
You Sexy Thing -- Hot Chocolate (Mrs. Rannous)
Juke Box Hero -- Foreigner (Val Rannous)

Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy …...........Irish/Scottish/American mashup
(new song)

I'm surprised I'm the first to pick this.

I spent a number of my formative years listening to a lot of rock/classic rock radio. So much so that there is a great deal of it that I would be happy to never hear again. However, there are a handful of songs I would consider quintessential/top 10 "classic rock" songs that I don't think I will ever tire of no matter how many times I hear them:

The Boys Are Back In Town
Blinded By The Light - I also chose in this countdown
Surrender - I chose in US countdown
Reelin In The Years - I chose in US countdown

I vaguely remember her in the Eagles thread, but I don't think she's been there in a while.
I just looked her up (Mystery Achiever), and her last post was in December 2020. I hope she made it through the pandemic, and life is good.
Wow that’s a long time. I liked her posts as well - she was very knowledgeable and respectful.
I've got a bad feeling about her disappearance, zam. Maybe it's just anxiety of getting ready to go get my teeth cleaned. :brush: I hope I get a good toothbrush color in my dental goodie bag.

Good luck - I always ask for blue like that avatar is using. Although someone should tell the avatar to brush vertically not horizontally.

the rotten Kiss Army cabal, (who were a few yrs older than us) convinced us that were a Kiss tune ... and by "convinced" i mean daily beatings.

we got 'em back yrs later, when Kiss were "unmasked" and we busted 'em on how ugly they were ... then proceeded to beat Gene-level ugly into them

@Mummy4

... soooo, not a fan of cheezy ballads, eh? 😁

Quorthon (who was Bathory), used the imagery like a sledge hammer (much like the punx did with the Swastika; those patches fashioned in the shoppe of Jewish Pistols manager Malcom McClaren), to incite outrage & fury.

Mayhem were much more destructive, what with the spate of church torchings all around Norway, and the murder of Euronymous by Varg.

Quorthon (real name Tomas Forsberg) moved on to also usher in Viking metal, shedding the satanic imagery - he were the hugest player/influence on not only the extreme Scandanavian scene, but throughout the world - pretty much birthing two genres (though Venom has claim to Black Metal, but Bathory morphed their blueprint into the heavier, frozen, bleaker soundscape - punctuated by the lo-fi guitar rips & production).

Given who Bathory are named for, the subject matter shouldn't be surprising.

the most sourced non-fiction character across Goff & extreme metal, her ...

I vaguely remember her in the Eagles thread, but I don't think she's been there in a while.
She was also a Jets fan - maybe she gave up on football.

upon first seeing your post i thought it were quoting Mrs. R about the Blood Countess ...

I realized what I posted sounded way more morbid than the joke was meant to be.

I'm the first to take Magic Power? Really? :headbang:

I'm surprised I'm the first to pick this.

I feel that way about a bunch of songs so far. Shows how insanely deep this one is - much deeper than the other two.
I was frankly surprised no one had picked Mystery Achievement yet.
I was today years old when I learned Chrissie was singing “on my mind, on my mind, on my miiiiind” rather than “oh my my, oh my my, oh my myyyyy”.

Not exactly “she’s so POP-ular” but it’s a bit numbing to find that out.

you mean she's so f****** A

no?

@Dr. Octopus - I hadn’t heard the Avett Bros song you chose but I’ve stumbled across them before and I’ve always liked what I hear. I gotta listen to them more.
That entire album is one of my favorites. The song itself has been an obsession for me for years. The lyrics are just so powerful to me and the performance top notch.

Glad you liked it. I don't get to OWN IT though since some one else took it earlier.
