Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Good luck - I always ask for blue like that avatar is using. Although someone should tell the avatar to brush vertically not horizontally.
I peeked in my goodie bag when it was handed to me, and I spotted a lime green Oral-B brush, and I **** you not, the hygienist then said, "Take this pretty colored brush too." She handed me a beautiful blue Nimbus brush. It's like she read this thread. :tinfoilhat:

I typically (exclusively?) have been calling out a new to me song that bowled me over and won the round. I don't have one here so I will give the nod to Hope There's Someone. Depressingly beautiful is definitely my vibe.

I haven't talked about my selection today (Hope There's Someone), because I'm willing to let the person who had this highest on their list "own" this one. That person has a specific connection to the song that they might or might not post, but I don't want to steal their thunder.

For now, I just hope people who don't know it will listen all the way through as it builds and relays such a strong emotional impact IMO.
I suspect you were referring to me here and I appreciate your thoughts.

I haven’t been commenting about my individual songs at all on any of these countdowns but this one packs a punch for me.

I love this song (obviously), so it has been on many of my Spotify playlists over the years.

My mom developed gradually progressive small-vessel dementia in 2012 and moved from Washington to Utah so my wife and I could care for her better. She wound up in assisted living but I drove her to all her appointments for years.

A few months before she passed away we were driving somewhere, just she and I, and this song started to play. Two lines into it she breaks down crying…..fully sobbing.

Hope there's someone who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go?
Hope there's someone who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I'm tired

She’d never heard this song before and didn’t typically tune in to songs lyrically anymore at that point in her life but for some reason this one hit immediately for her. And so now I associate this song with that moment with my mom any time I hear it. And I cry every time.

It’s definitely not for everyone but I think it’s a powerful song.

@Dr. Octopus - I hadn’t heard the Avett Bros song you chose but I’ve stumbled across them before and I’ve always liked what I hear. I gotta listen to them more.

I don’t want to spotlight so won’t link any of their songs that are my favorites. I will say that I was lazy and didn’t feel like figuring out which of their songs would qualify so I suck. They are pretty easily in my global top 25 artists listened to over the last 5 years.

Emotionalism was one of my favorite albums of 2007. Haven’t loved any of their albums since that one nearly as much but they are still a lot of fun to see in concert.

Yes, and thanks for sharing the story.

Sadly for the Avetts, you are free to talk about any of their songs you'd like.

I tried to get them through on the American list but was rightfully turned away by krista as Gate-Keeper. Glad I got to include this song on one.

It's only been one day, and already the lead has changed - now a 3-way tie!

A few known favorites from this round excluding already listed songs.

Magic Power - My favorite Triumph song.
The Boys Are Back in Town - This song reminds me of a college road trip in my VW Bus, and this song came on the radio and everyone sang along.
Mystery Achievement - One of my favorite Pretenders songs. This one goes out to Mystery Achiever, wherever she may be.
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Another VH favorite and another great intro.
You Sexy Thing - Groovy 70s
When Your Mind's Made Up - 🧘‍♀️
Life During Wartime - This ain't no Mud Club, or CBGB, I got no time for that now.
Silly Love Songs - When this silly love song came out, we'd sing it and we each had a part at the end. Mine was, "How can I tell you about my loved one?" Child nerds.
Manic Depression - 🎸
Children of the Sun - Far Out
Unknown Legend - I like this cover by Shovels & Rope and Shakey Groves. @landrys hat I look forward to seeing S&R on Sunday and hopefully meeting you.
Killing Me Softly With His Song - My favorite version will always be Roberta's, plus hers has an extra verse, but this version is very well done, and Lauryn Hill sounds great.
No Woman, No Cry - I missed doing a favorite list when this originally appeared, so I'm mentioning now that this is one of my favorites by Bob Marley.

A few unknown new to me favorites

First Time I Died
Birthday
Jubilee Streets - I'm not familiar with this one.
Drunken Lullabies - :suds:
Tage wie diese

So yeah, Die Toten Hosen - I'm not sure what penetration, if any, they got in the US, and I'm not sure where I first heard them to be honest. I picked a more recent track of theirs - released in 2012, compared to their probable peak in the late 80's with Hier Kommt Alex. It's my favourite of theirs because it's so upbeat - it's just an explosion of happiness.

Also love that:

a) They're from Düsseldorf, easily my favourite German city on account of that it offers a fantastic base to watch football from, and that it is one of the few places in Germany that doesn't just brew lager which, while good, mostly just tastes the same as anywhere, namely it's dominated by Altbier (old beer), and oddly my favourite place to get a beer there (zum Uerige) was used in the first episode of the TV series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet
b) They did an Unplugged cover of the Clash track I took in the UK countdown, namely Guns of Brixton

My favorites from today...

  • Mystery Achievement by The Pretenders- a band I should like more than I do but this draft has helped me develop my taste for them. This song immediately grabbed me.
  • Magic Power by Triumph- this is the 2nd time I've liked a song by them despite not loving this general style of music. Nice work Triumph fans.
  • La Vie ne rose by Edith Piaf- I went with her other famous song, happy to see someone select this. Beautiful stuff
  • When You're Minds Made Up by Glen and Marketa, Is this from Once or Swell Season? Not sure but it's pretty and vaguely familiar
  • Sade! Maybe I made a mistake taking her for the UK draft
  • Yeke Yeke :)

This probably would’ve been the biggest shocker to high school me. “GNR over Metallica? And November Rain at that?” they might have said, phrasing as to not violate the Thumper rule. Old (well, young) me wouldn’t get how this has grown on me. Of course, that’s assuming that the current me has the right idea.

#8s
Recognized by title alone: 18
Sounded familiar: 4
Knew from this countdown: 2
Didn't know: 19

Selected Favorites:
Magic Power (Andy Dufresne)
You Sexy Thing (Mrs. Rannous)
Killing Me Softly With His Song (MAC_32)
Silly Love Songs (higgins)
Manic Depression (Oliver Humanzee)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
First Time I Died (timschochet)
I Can Change (Ilov80s)
Of Course I’m Lying (John Madden’s Lunchbox)
Hang Onto Your Love (Hov34)
Talking To Yourself (ditkaburgers)

Dig The Vibe: Tage wie diese (titusbramble)

My top 5 from the 18 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. Raging weasel: Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - Van Halen
  2. Doug B: We Will Rock You (Live) - Queen
  3. zamboni: Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider
  4. New Binky the Doormat: Life During Wartime - Talking Heads
  5. Val Rannous: Juke Box Hero - Foreigner
Another great round, very tough to narrow down.

Updated Artist Rankings...can anyone catch Queen?

No. IMO it was obvious from the start of this that Queen would finish with the most points. Plenty of ground to cover still, but no surprise they are in the lead, and I assume there are plenty of high scores still to come for them.
This draft made me realize Queen is the band that I must be the lowest on vs consensus. Great band, tons of songs I like. They just don't connect with me and I never actively play their music.

Mister CIA:

Forever Dolphin Love - Connann Mockasin (New Zealand)
(new artist)
A few notes about this song. The version on Spotify is great, but I recommend checking out the performances on YouTube.

The one I originally linked to: The dude sitting behind and to the left of the drummer is my spirit animal. Speaking of the drummer, the long flourish near the end of the song makes me want to break out air drums.

My favorite version played atop a tall building (in Aukland, maybe).

And now, as promised: A New Zealand band with a guest American singer performing a Beatles song: While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The singer is Daniel Johnston, the writer of a song made famous by Beck, True Love Will Find You In The End. He [Johnston] had his demons, much like Syd Barrett and Rock Erickson.

EDIT: Is that you K4, with the glass of chardonnay and a microphone. https://youtu.be/r8t6XJ3Xlh8?t=3886

Yes, my song today was in Once, so you would have heard it there. :) My initial plan in this countdown was to take another Frames song, after being the only one to take them in the UK countdown, because my favorite live versions of their songs, which is what I wanted, have an American guitarist.* But then when it came to this countdown, I decided to go with my favorite song from Glen/Marketa aka Swell Season to get a bit more "foreign" influence in there rather than relying on a technicality. The build of this song is incredible, and then when you get to where you think it will go off the rails...it ends, and becomes beautifully quiet again.

*Chicago guy, part of OH's extended circle,** and I'm assured he's a great guy, but I did send word that he effed up my UK countdown intended pick.
**OH recommends this guy's well-received Butchershop Quartet's project, a rocked-out version of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, but I've not listened.

As to Sade, she was allowed in both countdowns because we realized late in the UK submissions of lists that she was eligible there, so I allowed people who'd long ago submitted theirs to include her here if they wished. So you were not wrong to have her in the prior countdown.

A few iconic Freddie performances aside, everything I love about Queen begins and ends with Brian May.

i can easily get with that, but also add Roger Taylor, who is the most under appreciated kit vox of all-time ... my top 10 Queen list is dotted with his vocal turns/tunes.

Were you ever able to find reasonably priced tickets to their show you wanted to go to?

I didn't look again but should. Of course, Ticketmaster won't do business with me so I'd have to use someone else's account. I learned this week that this applies as well to Ticketweb, which is a subsidiary of theirs!

By the way, was happy someone else took this artist so that I wouldn't corner the market on Glen Hansard two countdowns in a row!

exactly the same for me ...couldn't find one of their songs to make it near my top 31 - but I like them.

I guess just not "like" like them.

I knew 28 songs today, not counting my own but counting repeats, tied for the most so far.

Known-to-me favorites not counting my own:

Southern Cross -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (DrIanMalcolm)
Lunatic Fringe -- Red Rider (Zamboni)
Roundabout (live) -- Yes and Geddy Lee (Sullie). Lemme guess, Sullie put the Yes-only version of Roundabout on his Brit list?
Silly Love Songs -- Wings (Higgins). I predicted this as Krista's top Paul solo song and it didn't make her solo Beatles countdown at all. I was not aware of the full extent of her saxo-phobia. It's one of my favorite Paul solo songs, and I have fond memories of hearing it on the car radio as a kid.
Magic Power -- Triumph (Andy)
Unknown Legend -- Neil Young (Landryshat)
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) -- John Lennon and Yoko Ono (Westerberg)
November Rain -- Guns 'N Roses (Mt. Man)
Manic Depression -- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (OH)
Mirror in the Bathroom -- The Beat (Chaos34)
Life During Wartime -- Talking Heads (Binky)
Children of the Sun -- Billy Thorpe (Simsarge). Like Eyes of a Stranger, this is a song I would hear on FM radio but never had any idea of who the artist was or where they were from. I only learned that when for shtick purposes in GP4 I drafted four different songs named "Children of the Sun" at the same time. At the time Spotify only had a re-recorded version of this, not the original. Dunno if that's still the case.
You Sexy Thing -- Hot Chocolate (Mrs. Rannous)
Juke Box Hero -- Foreigner (Val Rannous)
YES! :)

So, I'll be perfectly honest here, I didn't pick that particular version of Roundabout to be a typical obnoxious Rush fanboy. . . maybe a little bit. I mostly picked it for that outstanding moment one can only experience through live music. I'll spare everyone they typical "pitchforks and torches" speech for the RnR HoF committee, why it took them so long to induct Yes, etc. Okay, one jab, I mean had they put them in, years ago, when they belonged then Chris Squire (one of my favorite musicians of all time) would have been able to join his bandmates on stage. Unfortunately, Chris passed away in 2015 so Yes needed a stand in. Thank God they put Rush in before Neil passed on but I digress. That song, with Geddy playing bass in place of Chris Squire, pretty much defines the word bittersweet to me. I know Geddy, Alex and Neil were not only heavily influenced but also huge fans of Yes so that had to be extremely difficult for Geddy to fill in there. I'm sure he would have much preferred to be in the audience watching Chris wail away rather than fill in for him. Having said that, it created (to me) such a great moment. I mean, that's not an easy song to play but, my God, he did an amazing job, just outstanding.

The 9:30 Club is pretty legendary for DC music. They are opening up a new venue with space for just 450 attendees, and just released list of artists to see that seems pretty crazy for such a small venue, with tickets priced at just $44 (artists like Foo Fighters, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Joan Jett & The Blackhawks, Spoon, Billy Idol). Lottery system in place and only allowing ticket exchange to prevent resellers from taking advantage.

Can sign up for 11 artists. Feel like everyone’s going to go for the some of the more famous ones. Any of you music aficionados recommend someone from this list that might want to put in my lottery bid that may be a bit under the radar to increase the odds of seeing a great band in such a venue for pretty cheap?

Thanks for all of the suggestions here. They apparently received over 500,000 requests for tickets to these shows; odds were long, and many shut out… I did get Billy Idol though. :headbang:

Sorry I haven't been giving much in terms of previews. Work got crazy again, and once more I'm also a day behind in my playlist listening. Hopefully I can do some better updating on Friday and beyond (tomorrow is the John Lennon/May Pang movie, so I'll be out and about).

Tomorrow one lucky listener has a Deja Vote with me!

Oh, also we get the original of a song previously covered by another artist in this countdown!

I know some folks have been on vacation and/or life-busy, but I'm also missing the commentary from @Chaos34 , @Doug B , and @Raging weasel lately. Hope no one wandered out of the thread and got in trouble.

With just a week to go, sending out huge thanks to our usuals, @Hawks64 and @Val Rannous , for keeping things running, and to @Ilov80s for stepping in on the spreadsheet. You had huge shoes to fill when @falguy understandably took a break, and you've been awesome. No matter what the movie guys say.

ditkaburgers:

Talking To Yourself - Carly Rae Jepsen
(new artist)

As you've probably surmised, @ditkaburgers loves her Pop music and Carly Rae is phenomenally poppy. Jepsen was already 26 when "Call Me Maybe" made her a teen idol but her writing and performing talents have sustained her career for over a decade.

"Talking To Yourself" comes from her most recent album which ditkaburgers considers her finest and most consistent. She saw Jepsen at the Greek last year and says it was an incredibly fun show with costume changes, flying around and lots of saxophone.
Eephus:

Hejira (Live (Human Rights Concerts 1986)) - Joni Mitchell
(duplicate, second vote)

Sadly there's not a lot of Joni to choose from these days. "Hejira" is the title track of my favorite Mitchell album. It's on the desert island tier for me.

I'd never heard this live version before but it was one of the few survivors when her material got pulled it It's a fine version that recreates the spacious sound of the album better than the Hejira cuts on Shadows & Light. Joni was still in pretty good voice when this was recorded in 1986. Her then husband Larry Klein plays Jaco's bass part with aplomb. Supposedly her brief set at this concert wasn't well received by the audience waiting for Bryan Adams and U2.

23 to life. The right not to spoil

1- Talk about a deep cut from Midnight Oil. Track 1, Side 1 on the debut album. Usually sets a tone for what to expect from a band straight away and it does it to great affect here. The political messages would become stronger down the line

2- Brave choice by Miss Kidjo to cover Hendrix, but the track is almost unrecognisable. Obviously flavored by her style and it was definitely interesting.

3 - Thanks to Don Quixote for pointing me in the direction of this one and this artist. This was my clear fave of his and i chose it myself, well a certain secret identity did.

4- The MTV unplugged version is so different to this. Is it really the same song? Should have saved by Bunty Bailey trivia for this. She was Morten Harkets girlfriend during the time of Take on Me and Sun Always Shines on Tv. Thats 25% of her acting work lol. She must have been awfully untalented.

5- Not surprised to see a few Garbage songs chosen, but surprised not many, if any from their wonderful debut album. I think I choose almost any track on that over anything else they recorded later. Push It, I Think Im Paranoid, Why Do You Love Me etc are all great songs, but that first album was damn special.

6- Despite the popularity if hair metal at the time, there was something refreshing about the Roses. In a short period of time they became the big dogs on the scene

7- It was so good to hear something new with Orbisons voice on it after listening to greatest hits of his for over a decade. As much as I love Bono, hearing Orbison spit out his words on Shes a Mystery To Me, makes me cringe. When Bono sings it, it sounds great. As much as Bino was writing for Orbison it just sounds wrong. With the Wilburys Orbison sounds right

8- La Bamba was a case of laziness. I know Los Lobos have far more interesting work, but i just couldnt find something suitable for Mexico and just wanted to tick a box on this one and move on to listening to 40 Yello tracks.

9- Man, Egypt was a vacancy on my list. New York Dolls would have had something for me for sure. Maybe not this one, but definitely something. To think of all the research i did and i missed this one.

10- Nice to see some eurodance turn up with a touch of Sia. This is a well written and produced track, but the star is the vocals. I know the charts turned to bullspit at some stage, but this track was a momster regardless.

11- Now I expected this song to turn up a lot. And this is the first appearance.... inside the top 10? Wonder how many times it appears hence forth.

12- I cannot say how much I love Envelope. And their whole first album Origin. Villa Nah were always gonna be my choice for Finland and there is plenty of choice from there. Ive listened to this track 10 times today. Not for the first time has the repeat button got stuck.

13-Already talked a bit about this track. It was his highest charting song in Australia, reaching #37, since his heyday in the 80s. Much more an albums artist, where he has had 39 of them released. Maybe Elvis Costello was an apt comparison.

14- Hard to pick a fave Gunners song, but this is in the running. They definitely had distinguised themselves from the poodle rock crowd. Such a well constructed and beautiful song.

15- Agree with the note on this. The harmonies are glorious. Im surprised it didnt chart better. Its great. Its not like a debut single. Her duet with Roy Orbison on Crying was 5 years earlier and she was reasonably established.

16- Glad someone else chose some K Pop. This is better than the one i chose lol. Only so much you can listen to unimpressed before you take the first one that sounds decent. This one has some interesting sounds on it at the least
