Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

We had this weird tax situation this year where we staked someone (Steve) who won money gambling, so dealing with that 1099-MISC was a nice new adventure for me.

Totally, wildly off-topic

I miss Long Beach, and I miss you, babe
I miss dancing with you the most of all
I miss the bar where the Beach Boys would go
Dennis' last stop before Kokomo

A few updates/spoilers to discuss while we (you) wait for results on Thursday!

To assuage any concerns about the Ace Award winner, I'll report that Blind Faith, "Can't Find My Way Home," is the winner of the award! Binky's switcheroo actually ended up (1) taking the title away from Steppenwolf, and simultaneously (2) giving the award to Blind Faith. Amazing because it did not show up until the 27-pointers, but on the strength of three top-five finishes it takes the honors. We do have another song that was guessed and receives 31 points tomorrow, but it's not enough to take it to the top.

No one guessed this correctly, as is tradition, but the guesses will actually come into play because...drumroll/spoiler...we did end up with a tie in the ***OFFICIAL*** contest and had to go to the tiebreaker to crown a winner.

The artist I referred to as "this countdown's Tom Petty" was Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, who ended up with 10 songs and NO repeats. The anti-Ace Award, perhaps the 2 of clubs? In any case, I'm glad I didn't end up having "into My Arms" on my list and instead kept it on my last five out, so that Nick and crew could take this honor.

The English Beat (and that’s what they call themselves) are still around, playing gigs at local dives in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. A friend of mine and I are going to try and go next time. Should be fun.
They only call themselves that when they're in America.

Yeah...thanks. I thought I'd covered this before, but that's the reason we're calling them what their actual band name is.

The Beat and The English Beat are two separate bands these days.

Dave Wakeling has lived in California for years and performs as the English Beat with a band of UK expats and Americans. They tour the US constantly.

The Beat was the name of the UK based group led by Ranking Roger. Since Roger's death in 2019 they've played some shows with Roger's son Ranking Junior fronting the band.

Cave also sang on two other songs by The Birthday Party and The Boys Next Door.

That's neat, but the question was "Save It For Later," which I assume meant as the original version, not something that might have happened in recent years.

Yep! Even more popularity across the board despite where he might be at the end of the rankings.

ditkaburgers:

Euphoria - BTS
(new song)

@ditkaburgers' song is credited to BTS but is a solo effort by Jungkook, the youngest of the group's seven members. It's a gorgeous lush Pop song that's slower and dreamier than the typical ditkaburgers selection. She said she loved this song before she was a big fan of BTS.

Eephus:

Rockaway Beach - Ramones
(new song)

I realized late in the game that I'd left Ramones off of my long list because I mistakenly thought I'd picked "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" in the American countdown. I was getting tired of the exercise and just wanted to get my list in to krista so I didn't overanalyze things and went with my gut.

Rocket to Russia has always been my favorite Ramones album. It came out during my first semester of college and served as my gateway to Punk. "Rockaway Beach" is the band at their poppiest. It's musical junk food, as sweet and delicious as a deep-fried Twinkie on the boardwalk.

Eager to listen to this one based on this write-up.

@Mrs. Rannous and @Val Rannous , a little confirmation on this? When I put togehter this question for the SAWMC!!!111, I thought we had no Warren Zevon covers and chose him since he had a lot of popular songs in the US countdown. But then I realized I'd stupidly chosen an artist as a "misdirection" whose songs I knew not at all. I have not seen any of his songs chosen, to my knowledge, but could you please confirm I didn't miss any? :thanks:

10. It’s Deja VoteVu All Over Again…Again.

Which of the following also-rans in prior countdowns will NOT have a song with a cover version in this countdown: (a) Cream, (b) George Michael, (c) Townes Van Zandt, (d) Warren Zevon, or (e) none of the above (all will be covered)?

Likewise my answer to this question was that, shockingly, the Beatles had no covers chosen here, but if any Beatles experts :oldunsure: noticed that I missed any, please let me know.

Neither of us can find a Zevon cover. I think you're good.

Very good.

what makes this all the more remarkable to me is that there were not one song selected from Murder Ballads - his/their best selling, most renowned album - the one i selected in last album draft, and one that is widely regarded as a top 3 platter in his complete oeuvre - thematic and brutal and sways in and outta style/construct - his best ever effort, imo.

what other act/artist could pull off 12 unique selections sans one from an album of that magnitude?

PS - i do recall Curse of Milhaven being a bit polarizing in that album draft i mentioned ... dunno if Stagger Lee were greeted with same.

love. this. guy.

great to see him getting props.

the full Wendy O experience are not complete 'til viewing "Reform School Girls"

... or sawing the car in half for Snyder.
Why Reform School Girls - and Chained Heat, for that matter - didn't make the top 100 '80s films, I'll never understand.

not holding my breath for it on the upcoming Shukesel & Ebert "next hundy" list either ...
Ebert actually liked films from that genre if they were not just exploitative.

And we libidinous teenage boys viewed them as love stories.

co-ed prisons were a thing i once believed would eventually catch on.

- not that wanting to be locked up with Wendy O and her crew had anything to with that

I'm amused to be the second vote on a song that had appeared a total of three other times before my selection, all with the same singer. Though the song is more about leaving one’s comfort zone, it’s hard not to feel some of the lyrics in a different way. I won’t dive into it too deep (or possibly the complications), but safe to say that this song has resonated some, in whatever form.

Here’s the next group of bands, all over 150 points

INXS283
Rush279
The Jimi Hendrix Experience262
Bob Marley248
AC/DC234
Wings232
The Police227
Arcade Fire218
Santana191
Tool184
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds164
Triumph163
Thin Lizzy161
Ramones160

gotta think that Rush and Jimi have the best chance at breaking into the top 10 here

I Wanna Rock & Roll All Night

Great song from my youth. I liked Kiss as a young, young man and then got back into them my sophomore year of high school. The year was '88. Music wasn't really hopping back then. Hair metal ruled, Kiss fit that bill, and I went a little retro with it.

Most music aficionados will tell you Kiss sucks. I like songs like "Gold Gin," "Strutter," "I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night" and others. I was maybe a little simplistic as a youth and never really understood Gene Simmons's utter cynicism. I just liked some of the tracks.

I believe Rush has a ghost of a chance.

I still have so much work to do on the sociopolitical implications that surround my number one that I'm glad you didn't. What a fascinating history of the birth of the song.

This was sort of a joke, by the way. In looking up the history of the song, the sociopolitical was undeniable and at the fore of a very deceptive track. I found out with some more clarity what seemed to be under the surface wasn't so under the surface. I love the song regardless, and you can divorce the political from it, though I don't see why one would want to.

oh yeah, I bought their first album and played the grooves off of it ..."Strutter" was my #36 in this countdown - and it was between that and "Cold Gin"

that entire album is gold Jerry ...gold.

saw them three times back in the day - once with Bob Seger warming up, weird combo but it worked
