People are forgetting the Power, the glory, the charismatic force that was Lynn Dickey.
The point is that he still had those weapons and the poster said that Manning had nothing on his teams.I think the problem comes with people assuming Manning can have no fault. So they say, Manning is awesome and can't have no fault, so why didn't his teams win more? Why didn't Manning and the Colts win as many as Montana, Brady, etc.? If there is the stipulation that Manning cannot be at fault, then they look for other reasons: his teammates. The assumption is always that Manning's teammates were horrible, and this is just not true. He had some great teams and should have won more superbowls. The fact that he didn't is a stain on Manning. And how many of them were first team All-Pro because they had Manning as there QB?You've got to be kidding. You talk like Manning has had no weapons, but over the course of his career, he has had FOUR first team All-Pro players at the skill positions. FOUR! I'd be curious as to how many other quarterbacks have had that many first team All-Pros around them. Certainly no others while Manning has been playing.Tough one. For me it's between the 49'ers and the Colts. The 49'ers certainly have a ton of SB's between their two QB's but their teams were pretty stacked from top to bottom. The Colts have had Unitas and Manning...and that's about it. I'm old enough to have watched Montana, Young, and Manning, but I'd have to say if I were to start a team tomorrow and I had my choice of those 3 QB's to start with, I'd take Manning and give him some weapons. Could you imagine the numbers/championships Manning would have on those 49'er championship teams?
I'm not even a Peyton guy, but I think he's have more hardware if he had the defense they other teams he faced had. You take him off Indy and they win 3 games. The point is that he still had those weapons and the poster said that Manning had nothing on his teams.I think the problem comes with people assuming Manning can have no fault. I think you are seriously overrating Young.I think that Montana and Young may actually be the 1st and 2nd best QBs on the board. Steve Young may be the most underrated QB in the history of the NFL.
Also underrating Unitas. If you compare his numbers to those of his contemporaries, he's pretty extraordinary. Considering the era he played in vs. the pass-happy game of today, he did some amazing things.I think you are seriously overrating Young.I think that Montana and Young may actually be the 1st and 2nd best QBs on the board. And Young's numbers compared to his contemporaries was pretty extraordinary. I'm not here to say Young was better than Unitas, but just to point out that Young was absolutely 100% AMAZING from 1992-1998. Those 7 seasons probably stack up very favorably to any 7 of Unitas' seasons (with each being compared based on their contemporaries). Of course, outside of those 7 seasons, Young doesn't have much to point to other than some really nice relief efforts. Also underrating Unitas. I think Montana + Young are in this discussion. In fact, even for as highly as I regard Manning--and clearly, Unitas, needs to further discussion--I'd still choose Montana/Young just slightly over Unitas/Manning.Clearly a tough call, and an argument for the Indy QBs is completely legit. No other combo is greater than Unitas and Manning.
Unpossible.I think you are seriously overrating Young.I think that Montana and Young may actually be the 1st and 2nd best QBs on the board. Steve Young may be the most underrated QB in the history of the NFL.
Has Joe responded to why the Packers are the only team with 3 QB's listed?Seems just slightly unfair.
Bill Belichick said Bert Jones was one of the best QB he has ever seen. Injuries got the best of Bert Jones or he's a HOFer.Q: What doesn't come back in your experience? BB: I think those injuries could affect anybody. I've seen plenty of guys not come back from them or combination of things. Bert Jones. When I was in Baltimore, Bert Jones he look like as good a quarterback as there was going to be in the National Football League, for two or three year player...whatever it was at that point...like his first four or five years in the league, I can't imagine a quarterback looking any better than him in those first five years. They might've been one or two, but I can't imagine there being very many. Once he hurt his shoulder in '78 or '79, whichever year it was, he was never the same. That was pretty much it. He never really came back. I was with him in...I guess it was his second year, but looking back on it I would say, one on one guy, based on where Bert was his second or third year in the league, I can't imagine you could take too many guys over him. He could do it all. He was great. Once he got hurt, it was never the same. Q: Could he really throw the ball over 100 yards? BB: Bert Jones, he could do just about anything he wanted to do. I bet he could throw it 100 yards. Yeah, I bet he could. It was like a slingshot. And he had so much flexibility in his shoulder. He did what I've never seen anybody do is when you were playing catch with him and he would be thrown the ball like this, Bert would release the ball back behind his head, like this, and you catch it and you kind of [say], 'Did he just throw that ball behind his head?' Because it happened so fast and you'd [say], 'Hey, can you do that again?' Q: In a tight spiral? BB: You couldn't tell the difference. You're standing there playing catch with him and you're saying to yourself, '[Man] he just threw that behind his head,' and you think you'd saw it wrong. But he would do that everyday just when he was warming up playing catch. Athletic. Good run. Tough. He was a great competitor. Whatever you want a quarterback to do, I would say that Bert could do it. Now he couldn't start at LSU, other than that, he could do it. They alternated him down there. He played, whatever, every other quarter his senior year, whatever it was. Similar to the [Tom] Brady situation really where he couldn't play in college but is one of the best quarterbacks in the league.Colts. Though I agree it is laughable that Jones was brought into the discussion.
