Which NFL Offenses Will Surprise in 2007? (1 Viewer)

Over the past 10 years, there have been at least two NFL clubs that far exceeded thei prior year offense numbers. That list includes:

1996 Jaguars, Panthers

1997 Chiefs, Lions

1998 Bills, Jets, Falcons, Cowboys, Vikings

1999 Colts, Raiders, Panthers, Rams, Redskins

2001 Patriots, Steelers

2002 Falcons, Vikings

2003 Titans, Seahawks, Rams

2004 Bills, Chargers

2005 Cardinals, Giants, Seahawks

2006 Bears, Cowboys, Saints, Eagles

Which two teams (or more) do you feel will put up Top 10 offensive production after ranking in the bottom half or bottom third of the league in offense last year?

LINK to team offensive totals from 2006.

I'm still not all that sure about Jason Campbell but I think all the pieces are there for the Redskins to become a really good offense. They have good wide receivers in Santana Moss and Antwaan-Randle El, a very good tight end in Chris Cooley and a rb tandem teams would die for in Ladell Betts and Clinton Portis. If Jason Campbell can put it all together I think the Washington Redskins can be a very good offense maybe even a great (top 5) offense in 2007.

I would go with the Bills as well. Losman performance at the end of the year was much an improvment on the rest of his career. He seems to finally start putting things together. ML I think will be better than WM who seem to be and indiffrent runner with Buffalo the last few years. The starting WR are solid and so the oline. The key the whole thing is weather Lossman play at the end of the year was real and not just a blip.

Houston and Tampa Bay. Both just needed better QB play and I think both got it. They also improved their OLines.

Based on scoring versus yardage, he are the only teams that varied by more than 10 spots:

CHI - 2nd in scoring, 15th in yardage

TEN - 16th in scoring, 27th in yardage

GB - 22nd in scoring, 9th in yardage

ATL - 25th in scoring, 12th in yardage

If the GB running game can amount to anything, they may be able to vault up the list.

Panthers ... I really don't think they can play as poorly as they did last season again, injuries totally destroyed the Panthers - SSmith is arguably the best WR in the game, they have a very nice young RB corp with Williams and Foster, they've made some nice additions at positions of real team weakness with the aquisition of Carr & Beason, Jarrett, CJohnson etc.

Redskins ... Campbell proved he's ready to assume the role of a starting NFL QB, 2nd year in Saunders Offence, solid RB duo in Portis and Betts, moderate schedule facing the likes of Mia, Buffalo, Min, Ariz, GB, Tamp & Det all possible W's as well as a weaker NYG team twice. ... I like their chances at being much improved over last year and very well could challenge for a top 10 offensive finish this year.

:loco:

Arizona (19) and Houston (28) are my picks to be top 10 this year. I really like Leinart and Schaub to exceed expectations. I think it's a mistake to right these guys off at this point.

My third choice would be San Francisco (24) but this is a long-shot. I like Smith, but I do not have much confidence in the WR's right now. Maybe things will change come training camp.

I guess, along with this, I should give my choices of teams to fall out of the top 10. Well, those choices would be Chicago (2) and Jacksonville (9.) I just don't see Chicago and Grossman putting up points at the same scoring clip as last year. They just won't need to, as Chicago's defense got even better this off-season, and the Bears will play with leads most games. Jacksonville's running game is fine and will be just as formidable this year, but they will struggle mightily in the passing game. There is clearly a confidence issue brewing in Jacksonville between Leftwhich and Del Rio, on both sides. Del Rio doesn't appear or sound all that confident in Leftwhich, and Leftwhich knows it. Both of theses teams will not make top 10 this year.

I think the Ravens could jump from #17 to Top-10 this year. McGahee will really allow the passing game to open, Heap is healthy heading into the season, the OL has some promising youngsters, McNair has a year under his belt in BALT and Clayton is ready to make a leap into stardom.

I also look for DET to leap from the #22 hole.

I'd lean more towards the Lions and Bills.

The Lions continue to draft WR in the draft and it looks like CJ/RW combo will be killer. Added to the fact that Kitna now has a full year under the Martz offense. They added Tatum for the quick runner until Jones is back and they changed some of their O-Line to help with protection. It all comes down to Kitna and accuracy. Kitna's accuracy was 62.4% last year, which has been the highest accuracy rating since his rookie year. Typically he is averaging 59.4%. His WR is better, I just don't see how they cannot do better than last year. I don't think Chicago is going to perform at the same level as last year, instead I think they come crashing down to reality. I drank the Kool Aid, I think the Lions MAY win their division.

On the other team, the Bills have been putting things together. The Losman - Evans combo has been pretty good since the 2nd half of last year. Enter in the new O-Line upgrades plus Marshawn and I think suddenly the bills have something going. They get to play Miami and NYJ twice, and I think they should be able to beat both of them in the upcoming year.

Keep saying Lions and Cardinals long enough to these type of questions and you'll eventually be right.

Right?

If I had to pick one team who was in bottom half last year (and they were 17th IIRC) who will be in the TOP 10 this year it would be the BRONCOS:

- Travis Henry will give them a much better running game

- Cutler will be improved at QB

- Graham may not catch a lot of passes at TE, but is a great blocker at that position

- They have a pretty nice schedule this year

Lions. Kitna a year more experience in the offense, two big fast wrs and my main man T.J. Duckett hammering the ball in the end zone.

I think the Broncos offense returns to its historical norm, so look for them to jump back up in the top 10. I'll take a bit of a dark horse in the Jets too. They added T. Jones, Penny has a year of health behind him, and everyone is in year 2 with Mangini.

Denver seems like an easy choice from the bottom half.

From the bottom third, I'd pick Tampa. They've upgraded QB and OL, and Gruden's system is very productive with the right pieces in place.

I glanced at the numbers, and the indicators say Carolina should be the most improved offense from the bottom dwellers last year. Surprisingly, St. Louis and Cincy have good indicators as well for marked improvement although they don't meet your qualifications.

Some lesser teams are Chicago and Washington.

I like the Redskins, Panthers, and Lions chances to have significant improvements when compared to last year's numbers.

Bills homer here. Happy to see the acknowledgment of the potential on the Bills' offense, but I have to honestly say that I do not see them becoming a top 10 offense this year. Lee Evans is a flat out stud at WR, but beyond him, the offense is largely unproven. Hopefully the offseason additions to the O-line is as much of an improvement as the mid-year reshuffling in 2006, if so, Losman will no longer have the OL to use as an excuse. Losman himself has definitely shown signs of improvement in both his decision making and his accuracy. But can he take it to the next level? Marshawn Lynch looks to be a more versatile back than WM, but he's a rookie, and you never know how well the college-pro transition will go. Behind Lee Evans is a slew of competent, but not really game-changing WR. And the TE position does not look to be much of a threat in the passing game. What this team needs is a few more playmakers before I can predict an offense that ranks in the top 10 in the NFL.

Anyways, my answer would be Denver. Travis Henry is a great addition to that offense, and Cutler will have another year under his belt. And the Denver OL is always solid.

First, let's look at the bottom 1/3. Green Bay Packers: no significant improvements, and a rookie RB, aging Favre, Buffalo Bills - improving Losman, improving OL, downgrade at RB (at least as a rookie), and Evans may get even better. ;) San Francisco 49ers - improving Smith, better WRs, VD improves, Gore continues to be a stud  Atlanta Falcons - Horn? Mess here. Minnesota Vikings - Jackson, Peterson/CT, and a mess at WR  Carolina Panthers - DWill should impress, but Jarrett won't impact this year  Houston Texans - Schaub might be better, Ahman Green certainly is, Kubiak makes progress  Miami Dolphins - Trent Green? Brown will improve I think, but no. Cleveland Browns - not this year, although I see improvement  Tampa Bay Buccaneers - they just have to play better, no real improvement unless you love Garcia. I do expect improvement  Oakland Raiders - can they get any worse? They lost Moss. Out of the bottom 1/3, I see Buffalo and San Fran with the best chance to make a marked improvement.

The Niners are the most obvious pick. That franchise is on the cusp of being one of the NFC's perennial contenders.

I like WAS here. Another year for Saunders to work his magic, Campbell to build upon last season and Portis to be more healthy. I think they have a solid chance to make significant improvements on offense in 07.

I think the 9ers and Panthers are going to have the most dramatic improvements to thier offensive production in 2007.

The 9ers after methodicly improving thier Oline and getting out of salary cap problems were able to add final pieces to thier offense this offseason. Gore allready broke out and Alex Smith improved a lot. Now they have Davis coming into his 2nd year and Darrell Jackson for Smith to throw to as well as Battle/Hills. I am liking this offense moving forward. They play in a weak division as far as defense is concerened as well.

The Panthers had a lost season last year with all the injuries to thier Oline. Now they have a new OC and a healthy improved Oline to go with the best RB the Panthers have ever had. Steve Smith will be healthy all season and I also like Drew Carter. Jarrett is only a rookie but I think he can help with some clutch possesion catches while he matures. The defense only needs the offense to keep the ball a bit longer so they can stay fresh and dominate games. I think the Panthers still have some issues at safety and LB but this is still one of the better defenses in the league that could improve its turnovers forced and give the offense more opportunities with the ball as well.

Silly me. I foresee great improvements from the Dolphins' production. They'll certainly better 16 PPG

Denver - Adding Henry and Graham will help their running game, which hasn't needed much help in the past. And a full season of Cutler at the helm should be better than the Plummer-looking-over-his-shoulder/Cutler thrown into the fire combination.

Carolina - They have a good number of weapons in the passing game now, with Smith, Carter, Colbert, and Jarrett. Foster and Williams are talented runners, and Delhomme is solid (and if he gets hurt, Carr could be a decent replacement). The o-line needs to get and remain healthy to improve on that 3.9 ypc - if that happens the Panthers will definitely be top 10, and a Super Bowl contender.

I like Carolina and San Francisco to improve over last year offensively.. then perhaps Tampa or Atlanta as possibilities with consideration to Houston.

ever hear of Stephen davis? much better than these two yoyos..Panthers should be improved, they underachieved last season. Delhomme should finish with 24-26 TDs..still not convinced the running game is anything but mediocre at this point, but thats what training camp is for right?

Teams with a good chance to see significant improvements in offensive production in 2007, in no particular order:

1. Texans - really is nowhere to go but up..David Carr sucks, the dude completes over 68% of his passes last year, yet only threw for ,what,11 tds and 12 INTS?! how he still has a job in the NFL is beyond me. Couch didn't even get this much time in the league! Ahman Green adds respectability to the running game, and the Texans defense is improving, which should easily give the Texans more possessions, and more chances to score..

2. Jets - TJ will add a new dimension to this offense. Cotchery is set to catch 85+ balls this season, after breaking out in 2006..This offensive line has another year under its belt and should begin to show quite an improvement over last season's ups and downs.

3. Dolphins - like Houston, they have only one way to go, and that's up..Trent Green is old,but he's a solid QB who isn't mistake-prone like Harrington was last season. Ron Brown is going to be a top 5 RB in 2007, he'll catch a TON of passes and will get ALL of the goalline carries, and well over 300 carries..that offensive line needs work, I admit..but if EVER that offense was going to break out of its slump, its now..

4. Redskins - great O-line, OC, RB's..good WR's and TE..the only hitch? Jason Campbell.if he is as good as advertised, this offense could score a lot of TDs..
