Which QB has the 2nd-strongest arm in the NFL... (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
Even the Raider-haters in the crowd will acknowledge that JaMarcus Russell has the finest gun in all the land.

Who has the 2nd-strongest arm now?

Cutler?

Palmer?

Big Ben?

The Strongest armed qb is sitting in a jail cell.
You've watched too many Nike commercials. If we're basing arm strength on how far you can throw a ball, I submit there isn't a QB in NFL history who would have been able to throw it a longer distance than Russell. Vick would be up there if the category was throwing a fastball to a man 8 yards downfield, when a simple touch pass would have sufficed.

Id put Palmer in there. Ben's strength isn't a big arm, its moving around and finding someone while scrambling. Cutler has to be in the discussion too.

As far as Jamarcus is concerned... He has 36 completions in his career, and while he might have a big arm (We all remember his combine performances) he has yet to show that on the field at the pro level. 5.7 yd avg doesnt say it all necessarily, but it has to be a part of the discussion.

This thread isn't about on-field production. To that end, feel free to nominate someone who may be a 3rd-string QB at the moment. Russell might end up being the biggest bust in the history of the league, but you can't take his arm strength away from him.

That is a pretty bold statement what facts are you basing that on?

Does it matter?
Not one bit. It's March.
Perfect answer. :excited: Are you talking strongest, or the one that a can throw the farthest? It's not necessarily the same answer.
I think throwing the ball far is a fair gauge of arm strength, but I see your point. We don't get to see these guys throw their "A" fastballs often enough, though JaMarcus can throw it 60 yards across his body with the flick of a wrist. The kid is freaky. (I need SOMETHING to feel good about regarding Oakland's offense) :goodposting:

Something which is so highly subjective can only be a product of opinion, which that is. I don't present it as fact.

Anyone hear the story about Russell throwing it goal-line to goal-line during a LSU practice his final year?

I'm sure he had a strong wind at his back... and it probably only skipped in after hitting at the 5 yard-line. :goodposting:

I heard he threw it underhanded, against the wind, with his LEFT hand.

Pretty sure he was wearing mittens and the ball went through the goalposts and left an imprint on the poor guy who caught it.

He was also buried up to his waist in sand, facing backward, and had to throw over a 25 foot wall 3 feet away from him.

Now that Brett is gone, I guess Jamarcus might be the guy. I'd say Cutler is next.

Favre did not always have the biggest arm as far as sit down and throw it 70 yards.

But not many could zing it into a tight spot like he could (and that got him in trouble too)

And not many (and I would actually say very few to nobody) could throw from such odd angles and without planting their feet.

I think there is a big difference between just arm strength as far as how far a guy can throw it...and usable arm strength that Favre showed.

I have yet to see Jamarcus get close on the 2nd type of arm strength.

Not in the Iggles offense.
Snide remark or not, you make the right point. Arm strength is just about the most overrated "measurable" in the NFL pantheon. Honestly, a QB can suffer from the lack of sufficient arm strength, but there are precious few QBs talented enough to overcome a "weak" arm and actually get consistent PT in the NFL. Most guys that are successful in this league have PLENTY of arm. It's absurd. McNabb has a HUGE arm, but why on Earth would that give me comfort? We're not playing Tecmo Bowl.

FWIW, 2007 combine, arm strength in MPH:

Toby Korrodi 63 MPH

John Beck: 61.1 MPH

Stanton was a measly 55.7 and Russell didn't compete.

If Favre had the 2nd strongest arm, then aaron Rodgers has the 2nd strongest arm now cause his is better than Bretts.

I think alot of people will be shocked.
