Whisenhunt and Leinart (1 Viewer)

As a Boldin and Leinart owner in a dynasty league.....I hope Leinart sits.....Warner is better for Boldin right now...and better for the Cardinals if they truly believe they can win now.....I'm hoping Warner starts against the Steelers this weekend.

QBBC....glad I passed on Leinart.
This is insanity. He can't be their committed guy of the future AND be in a rotation. I know the Ravens are a tough D to figure out but he should have stayed in and taken his lumps like Peyton Manning in his 1st couple seasons. This sucks.

Whats the age difference b/w Warner and Favre? I always thought Warner had game left in the tank. He was on a bad AZ team last year and got yanked. Now AZ is a little better, still has 2 strong WRs. If they want to win now, play Warner. If Wiz is setting up years 2, 3, 4, 5 play Leinart.

I dont know what is worse, having Leinart and seeing Warner go off, or having both and having to decide which one to play.

I have both, and need one to be the clear starter this week, I hope its Warner. But whoever it is, might not matter, they host the Steelers. All the hype will go to Wiz and Tomlin.

Whisenhunt is stupid. You can't use this approach effectively in Football. The closer role works in baseball, but the action is much faster in the NFL and you can't effectively bring in a QB cold off the bench for pressure situations and then return him to the bench. It may work sometimes but more often then not it will fail.

I think this is a way for him to play the best player right now (Warner), while still keeping Leinart in the discussion to avoid controversy.

obviously this isn't a good development for leinart this season...

the problem is if they get behind & in catch up mode, they could go to warner more now with this initial success (didn't win, but came back & were in position to win at the end)... and if they are winning, we will probably see more of the preferred grind it out, run-heavy approach of whisenhunt & grimm...

good point about whether there will be enough reps for warner... but OTOH, lack of reps didn't seem to hurt him sunday...

warner isn't the future, but the new HC wants to win now... the division could be up for grabs... i think leinart will be OK eventually (after all, he has less than 16 pro starts in his career, i think), but what OK means is unclear if they continue to emphasize run...

a few big differences between warner & leinart are that warner is much more decisive with his throws, & the ball gets out of his hand a lot faster... whatever problems he had with his hand/arm in the past are obviously behind him... if the team hadn't drafted leinart, he might still be starting, & arguably could be starting in places like ATL, KC, MIN, etc...

i have seen leinart be decisive & get rid of the ball quickly, but he doesn't seem to do it all the time, & i'm not sure why... BAL is a tough defense & gives a lot of QBs problems, let alone young QBs, but leinart has had a few clunkers this season already...

when was the last time an NFL HC employed a QBBC?

I remember Sonny Jurgenson and Billy Kilmer sharing play with George Allen's Redskins

addendum... its not like the cards are out of the playoffs... the could have been 3-0 if they had gotten a few breaks, & maybe with warner they would have been...

cards probably aren't good enough to run all the time, if they do improve & are in playoff hunt... there will be games they are forced to pass...

for now, leinart looks like a backup in fantasy leagues... he will be inconsistent from week to week, due to scheme reasons & uncertainty with warner...

they will be 1-3 Sunday

Besides egos getting in the way and "going against the norm", I can't see why this would not work. Opposing teams spend countless hours getting ready for a QB each week, imagine the pressure it would put on them if they have to get ready for two. In fact, I think it would be safe to say that today's results while Warner was in had as much to do with his performance as it did with the Ravens not being ready for him.
It seems like Warner and Leinart have a pretty good relationship. I don't think egos will get in the way, here.
It also helps that Warner is 36 and not a threat to permanently take his job.

As long as they keep winning, the coaching staff will "get away with" whatever they choose, say for example, running off a big name QB in favor of spending more money on Dline and bringing in a Trent Dilfer type.

I know the game situations were different, but the contrast in effectiveness has been so large you would think they'd consider going to hurry up offense for the entire game, like the Bills used to (as I recall).

Leinart is in his second year, as coach Vermiel would say, "still in diapers." This is the reason Wisenhunt did this, the guy was not ready to face the Ravens and Warner obviously was. I'm a Leinart owner and I cant say with a straight face that it was a bad coaching move. Look at the results.

they've had 2 training camps and almost a whole season to get leinart ready to run the hurry up offense. the guy is their QB of the future and he's out of the game during the most important parts.
Short term gain, long term loss.It is impossible for Leinert to improve his 2-minute offense if you bench him each time there's a 2-minute situation.

If no one ever tries this, how do we know it doesn't work?We have no problem with substituting players on a situational basis. If Leinart was pulled at the 40 yard line with :02 left on the clock for a hail mary attempt, no one would think twice about this. It's okay to bring in a QB with a stronger arm for that situation. Why is it wrong to bring him in for a 2:00 drill?

and one game out of first in the fearsome NFC West where we stand today... :)

This "strategy" could backfire on building the Leinart's confidence. I think when you decide to start your young QB, you also have to acknowledge the fact you probably are going to see some ugly games. I really think this could affect Leinart's confidence in himself and also his teammate's confidence in him. I'm not a coach but you have to decide, do you want Leinart to grow this season, or do you want to try and win anyway you can this season.

Yep on above post.

Leinart just has looked bad out there.

Warner looked good.

Too many coaches have to get away from this "hurt their qbs feelings" crap

Because if you're only bring in a QB to throw a ball 60 yds 1 time into the endzone thats one thing. Snap, 5 step drop and throw as hard as you can into the corner, easy. But to come in in crunch time to manage an offense after you have been sitting on the bench, thats a little more difficult. You need to be able to read defenses and hit open players and move your team down field in a short time period. With 1 throw you don't need to read anything really, it's a low percentage play.To be successful he needss to pick a QB and stick with him, at this point the better QB looks like Warner.
