White Sox Offseason (1 Viewer)

What a dreadful year with a ton of question marks all around. Where does the team go from here...72 wins in the toughest division in baseball.

C - AJ

1B - Konerko

2B - Richar?

SS - ?

3B - Crede/Fields

LF - Fields/Owens

CF - Owens/Erstad

RF - Dye

DH - Thome

Buerhle

Vazquez

Contreras

Garland?

Danks

Floyd

Who can this team pick up to get better for 08? What can they do with the pitching staff and more importantly their bullpen.

Looking at this team now, they suck. And things aren't looking to promising for 08.

In spite of hearing some ranting and raving from PM about how I said I don't go around predicting the future......

PITCHING

I'd like to see at least one of Lance Broadway and Gio Gonzalez get legit chances to contribute to the team next year. Preferably at the expense of Contreras, but being owed $20 million over the next 2 years makes me think the Sox are saddled with him unless they eat a big chunk of his salary. The bullpen has obvious holes, maybe they can help there in 2008 and look to them as SPs for 2009 forward.

There's also some decent FAs available this year for the bullpen (Affeldt, Linebrink, Vizcaino) and I'm sure any of them could help with how bad the BP is right now.

But BPs are weird.

Cotts and Polite were lights out in 2005, both fell apart in 2006 and neither were even rostered on a ML roster at the year's end.

Thorton and MacDougal looked pretty damn good in 2006 and fell apart in 2007.

For all we know, the group of scrubs from this year could be good next.

Rotation: For right now I'm hoping it's without Contreras

Buerhle

Vazquez

Garland

Danks

Gonzalez

Bullpen

MacDougal

Thorton

Broadway

Linebrink

Masset

Closer

Jenks

You build teams from the middle out, and CF / 2B / SS are the big problems with this team right now.

SS: The position is a mess from the major league team down to A ball in this organization. Uribe can't be the everyday SS anymore, but available FAs leave a lot to be desired. I think you're looking at one of Vizquel or Eckstein as a stopgap for now. Wildcard here is Japanese player Tomohiro Nioka.

2B: They gave Richar a good chance to win the job next year and don't think he did anything to solidfy it. Big ? as to what to do here. FA pool at 2B is just as bad as at SS. I'm not sure if KW can pull it off or not, but Ryan Freel could be an interesting fit here and fill a big hole at the top of the lineup if they move away from Owens in CF

CF: Erstad should be gone, it's a club option and I don't think they'll pick it up. He's not a Major League CF anymore and proved once again that he can no longer stay healthy for an entire season. I'd rather see a new face or Owens given a shot to keep developing. He did hit .287 with 27 SBs after the All Star Break and played a pretty damn good CF. As for new faces, I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand here next year. I pray they don't drop big dime into Andruw Jones. I think they go after Hunter and hard.

Postion Players (batting order)

C - AJ (8)

1B - Konerko (4)

2B - Richar? (9)

3B - Crede (6)

SS - Eckstein (1)

LF - Fields (7)

CF - Hunter (2)

RF - Dye (5)

DH - Thome (3)

Bench

Ozuna

Machoviak

Hall

Terrero

Uribe - As much as I hate to say it, you need to keep him as a bench player. There's no one else at SS in the org and you need a backup.

I'd give this team a fighting chance. 2-6 can line up against anyone in MLB and the top 3 pitchers are all proven guys that don't break down. Bullpen is still a big ?, but who the hell knows what version of these guys shows up.

No more old guys please.

This team needs an infusion of some youth.

I'm OK with Fields at 3B and Owens in LF.

I know Chicagoans are crazy for Torii Hunter - but I dunno. I've survived the fading Ralph Garr and Ron LeFlore eras already.

And I dunno... while most people's power numbers have been fading, Hunter's have been increasing. Things that make you go Hmm.....

Just say 'no' to Andruw Jones too.

Carl Crawford works for me.....

Yep, there has been chatter about him as well. While it sounds good in theory, I don't think it will happen.Love Carl Crawford though.
There's been talk about Carl Crawford coming here since the 2006 trade deadline. I have no idea why TB would give up a 25 year old player with an unlimited ceiling. Not saying I wouldn't love to see him on the team, just don't know how likely it is.

It's not. The Angels asked last year and the Rays apparently wanted a ridiculous amount of players for him.And you guys don't have the Angels farm system.

should they just give their studs away?

Of course not. However, it seems fairly common for the Rays to ask for the moon for any of their players (not just the studs) and mostly settle for nothing and not trade any of them.

I dunno, they traded quite a few guys in 06 (Lugo, Hendrickson) to teams in the race and moved Wiggington in a pretty fair deal this past summer. Doesn't seem like they're prepared to just settle though, and if they don't get what they want, they walk. They should ask for the moon for Carl Crawford. With the way his contract is currently structured (very cheap for a guy of his caliber), his youth and ability, he has to be one of the 10 most valuable commodities in the game.

Have to be strong up the middle and they are not, also need a legit 1 and 2 in the order. Can Owens bat lead off? Not sure, but more importantly if he bats lead off you need a player batting second that is unselfish, Guich was the key in 2005.

Trade Konerko/Vazquez for young pitching. Pray Josh Fields becomes a solid 1B.
:sadbanana:  :loco:
Konerko and Vazquez are both past their primes, I'm not sure the Sox could get much(or what Sox fans think they are worth) for either one at this point.I'd like to see if Javy can follow up his excellent season with another, but he seems like the type who folds under pressure, and it wasn't a shocker to see him pitch like an ace once the Sox were out of it. Konerko is a solid 1B, but his contract could turn into a deal-breaker very soon. His swing looked slow this past year, I don't see this improving over time.Where is Fields going to play once Crede gets back? Crede is a gold-glove caliber defender at the hot corner, while Fields is pretty much a butcher regardless of position. I think he replaces Konerko at 1B sooner than most think...

Stop.

Sounds like the White Sox are now targeting Andruw Jones. If that's the case, they may as well dismantle this team and start working other teams farm systems.

Oh, I forgot, they have nothing to trade.

Why? you don't want to have the oldest team in baseball.Agreed, dismantle now.............Jones will not help you now, or in the long run.

Jones to the Dodgers.....
That is a good thing.
I'm not so sure. If this was the price for Andruw, I think the White Sox should have explored him @ 3 years $50M. I think it would have been worth the gamble. Sure he was awful at the plate last year, but he could easily turn that around. And if he lost a step, he'd get it back with less ground to cover at the Cell.News broke today that he was close to resigning with the Padres, but I really think ( I can't believe I'm saying this) they should look into Milton Bradley.

Differing opinions, but no thanks.

Oh please, give an explanation at the very least, this plan isn't THAT stupid, and would be good for the WhiteSox, imo...These two are the only tradeable(sp?) players Kenny Williams has that have any value at this point, and both are on the decline, imo. Konerko has been good for the Sox, but this may be the last chance they have(due to contract/age) to get anything decent in return for him. Add that to the fact that Fields could easily step in at first, and I don't get the reluctance to trade him...as for Vasquez? Good luck with him in pressure situations...IMO, it's time for the Sox to rebuild with youth...as Detroit/Cleveland will own the central for the next 3 years...

Ken Williams was among the first wave of general managers to escape the confusing maze of lobbies at the Opryland Resort today, choosing to cancel his daily briefing with reporters. Probably a good call considering the White Sox' GM made perhaps the most ridiculous comment to come out of the annual convention.

Reacting Wednesday to the blockbuster deal that sent power-hitting third baseman Miguel Cabrera and former All-Star left-hander Dontrelle Willis from the Florida Marlins to the Detroit Tigers - wrecking the Sox' latest offseason plans - Williams said: ''All this has done is put the Tigers in a better position to contend with us.''
I know this is a week old, but WTF? :blackdot:

Well what do you think boys. We still don't have a CF or a lead off hitter and could maybe use another starter. :goodposting: This team could win 90 games or lose 90 games. :goodposting: USA Today named the Sox one of the big winners in the off season- http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/20...nterstitialskip
USA Today has one of the worst set of sports sections in the country. Nothing they say can be taken with any seriousness. Having said that, this team will most likely be closer to losing 90 games mostly because they are in a division where they have to face Cleveland, Detroit, and Minnesota approximately 55 games this year. Also, they'll have to play the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Mariners 25-30 games. They won't break even against any of these teams so that's at least 45-50 losses right there before we even talk about the rest of the AL.
