Not so fast...Jones Not Likely to Hit M's Lineup Soon

By Kirby Arnold

For The Kitsap Sun

SEATTLE

Mariners manager John McLaren will meet with front-office executives today and discuss ways to tweak the roster for the second half of the season.

One move that could happen soon — starting pitcher Horacio Ramirez may come off the disabled list.

One that isn't likely — star outfielder prospect Adam Jones being called up from Class AAA Tacoma.

Ramirez threw seven innings Tuesday in a minor league rehab game in Arizona for the rookie-level Peoria Mariners. He gave up nine hits but struck out four and didn't allow any runs or walks.

"He looked totally healthy," said McLaren, who watched the game. "There were young kids up there free-swinging, but he settled down and had good rhythm."

Ramirez needed only 78 pitches to get through seven innings and went to the bullpen and threw 20 more pitches to build arm strength.

Jones, hitting .309 with a team-high 21 homers and 79 RBI for the Rainiers, became a topic of conversation Wednesday when a report surfaced that the Mariners would call him up as early as today. The plan, according to the report, was for Jones to play left field with left fielder Raul Ibanez moving to designated hitter and struggling DH Jose Vidro going to the bench.

McLaren shot down that idea.

"I haven't heard anything about Jones coming up," he said. "I haven't heard anything about it at all."

Ichiro Negotiations Ongoing

The Mariners are moving closer to a contract extension that would keep Ichiro Suzuki the next five years, although no announcement is expected soon.

Suzuki and the Mariners reportedly are close to a five-year contract worth $100 million.

One Mariners official said Wednesday that the club was getting closer to a deal but not close enough to announce anything. Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln and president Chuck Armstrong have handled the negotiations with Suzuki since the beginning of the season.

D-backs' Upton called up for first time

Outfielder to join team as Quentin goes on disabled list

By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- D-backs top prospect Justin Upton has been called up to the Majors for the first time, moving up to the big leagues from Double-A with Carlos Quentin headed to the disabled list Thursday.

Upton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, was en route to join the D-backs on their Southern California swing, but he was not expected to be in the starting lineup for Thursday's afternoon game at San Diego.

Upton, who turns 20 later this month and is the younger brother of Tampa Bay shortstop B.J. Upton, started the year with Class A Visalia, but was promoted to Double-A Mobile after hitting .341 in 32 games. With the BayBears, he is hitting .310 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs. He played in the All-Star Futures Game at AT&T Park last month, hitting a home run.

Quentin suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday night's game as he legged out a double in the fifth inning.

Upton Called Up

Remember all those Ken Griffey comparisons scouts put on Justin Upton prior to the 2005 draft?

Like Griffey, Upton plays the outfield, and like Griffey, he went No. 1 overall when drafted. And now, like Griffey, Upton will be just 19 years old when he makes his major league debut.

The Diamondbacks decided they could no longer delay the inevitable. They have called up the game’s No. 1 prospect, Justin Upton, after placing outfielder Carlos Quentin on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain. Quentin injured his leg running out a double Wednesday night.

Upton, who homered in last month’s Futures Game in San Francisco, has had one of the best seasons in the minor leagues this year, hitting a combined .319/.410/.551 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs in 385 at-bats. Upton got off to a torrid start at high Class A Visalia (.341/.433/.540, five homers in 126 at-bats) but has been even more impressive with Double-A Mobile. He had 13 homers and an impressive 37-51 walk-strikeout ratio. He walked 19 times while hitting .302/.433/.585 in July.

The younger brother of Devil Rays infielder/outfielder B.J. Upton, Justin Upton was not on the 40-man roster, but the Diamondbacks had room to add him without dropping a player (they are now at 40).

Normally a center fielder, like Griffey, Upton will make his pro debut in Griffey’s current position, right field. Upton has played some right field (seven games) in July at Mobile as Quentin slumped (he was briefly sent to Triple-A Tucson before getting hurt).

Ubaldo Jimenez was called up by the Rockies and has provided three quality starts. He's pitched 7, 6, 5 innings with an ERA of 3.5 and a WHIP of 1.11.

He'll be going up against Atlanta though on Saturday, so that will be a good test of his development.

Saved up my waiver position all season just for a shot at Upton or Braun. Missed out on Braun and now I'm #2 in line for Upton. Hoping like hell #1 is asleep at the wheel.

He might get the call if the Tigers keep sucking the south end of a north bound cow.
