Who is MJD's Back up? (1 Viewer)

Jennings is hurt so for now its Karim, and honestly I have a hard time believing that he will be getting that job back if he's out for very long. Karim is a beast, and his upside is much higher than Jennings. If you're looking for someone to handcuff long term I'd definitely pick Deji, and in the short term I'd probably still go with Deji

as an MJD owner, I picked up Karim and dropped Jennings, FWIW. In addition, I would prefer MJD be OUT and Karim be in, at this point....2 tds in 5 weeks...come on.

We may actually see a RBBC this Monday night. Deji may be a sneaky play...especially in leagues that reward return yards points.

Where are you seeing this RBBC info?
MJD did not practice again today and his hand was heavily wrapped. Also swelling was reported. He will probably be a go for Monday night, but I would not be surprised if he see an even split with Deji. Karim did get 15 touches this past Sunday also.

Karim gives Jags boost on offense, special teams

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Deji Karim is accustom to being unnoticed.

He played high school football with quarterback Sam Bradford and followed running back Brandon Jacobs at Southern Illinois.

Karim's getting much more attention these days, especially after his NFL debut.

Karim had 215 all-purpose yards in Jacksonville's 36-26 victory at Buffalo on Sunday. He returned four kickoffs for 145 yards, putting the offense in position for two field goals and two touchdowns. His last return, a 41-yarder in the third quarter, helped set up the go-ahead score.

He also gained 70 yards on 15 carries, filling in for Maurice Jones-Drew and averaging more yards per carry than the team's star player.

``Showed some juice in the return game and got some touches as a running back and did a nice job,'' coach Jack Del Rio said Monday.

Karim, a sixth-round draft pick in April, waited longer than expected for his chance. He injured his left thumb in the preseason, had surgery to repair ligament damage and spent the last two months trying to get back to 100 percent. He made the 53-man roster, but was inactive the first four games.

``He was practicing with this club,'' Del Rio said. ``Until he got rid of that, until the doctors cleared him out of that, we couldn't use him. The doctors finally paved the way for us to get him up and active.''

The Jaguars (3-2) were content to wait, especially after seeing what Karim could do in offseason workouts and training camp.

Karim, meanwhile, was a little antsy. He prepared every week just in case his number was called. Nonetheless, he felt butterflies all week after coaches told him he would make his debut and struggled to fall asleep Saturday night.

Once the game arrived, though, he felt more at ease.

``They've been preparing me to go out there and work as if it was a practice,'' Karim said. ``That's what I've been doing, getting the reps in practice. I was hoping it would transfer over to the football field, and it did. That's what I've been doing.''

The Jaguars, who host Tennessee next Monday night, expect Karim to continue returning kickoffs. He also could spell Jones-Drew, who has been banged up all season.

Jones-Drew missed the final two preseason games because of a balky knee, then missed some practice time during the regular season because of a sprained ankle. He left Sunday's game after injuring his right wrist on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Jones-Drew rolled around on the ground in pain. Trainers checked him out on the sideline and he returned for the next drive. But he sat out the rest of the way. Del Rio said X-rays revealed no damage.

``It was kind of sore here, there, then all of a sudden it was fine,'' Del Rio said. ``Whatever was going on, he's pretty quiet usually out there. He's taken some shots and delivered some shots, and usually you don't hear a whole lot (from him). He was making some noise, which made me concerned. But he's fine.''

Quarterback David Garrard believes the team will use Karim and fellow backup Rashad Jennings more in hopes of reducing Jones-Drew's workload and hits.

``He's been taking a little bit of a beating,'' Garrard said. ``We need some more guys to step up and be able to spell him a little bit, so that he can continue to stay fresh. It's a long season. It's a marathon, not a sprint.''

So Karim could be stay in the mix and might even get some notice.

``Doing everything I can to help my team, special teams, running back, whatever they ask me to do out there,'' Karim said. ``I try to stay humble and tell them it was an all-right game. I did what they asked me to do. I had a lot of mistakes.''

That's true. Deji probably would have scored more times than that. I mean, there's nothing in MJD's history that should possibly lead us to believe that he's a better-than-average TD scorer or anything...

Like what I saw out of Deji. I think he is the handcuff and will produce decent numbers if MJD continues to stay banged up, kid has some skills.

The hell with history....what have you done for me lately. He looks slow this year, and I think the JAGS are throwing in the redzone more than usual (see Garrards numbers lately) because MJD isn't getting it done. Karim looked much more explosive than MJD, IMO.

Hey, just looking at the stats, Jennings had 8 receptions in the 4 games he played before the shoulder injury. Karim had good yardage but no catches last week in mop up duty. The more I think about it, the more this looks like the New Orleans situation - Betts and Ivory all over again. Neither option is great, but Jennings in PPR, and Karim in non. Especially since Jennings is practicing, albeit limited.

The jags were running the clock out

Deji is the handcuff.
Based on what?Karim looked good against the Bills last week, but Jennings has a 5.0 average over his two years and is ahead in pass-protection. He's also a more powerful runner. If MJD were out and Jennings and Karim were both healthy, I'm pretty sure you'd be looking at full RBBC.

So? I think most are just looking for that 10-15 points out of their RB2-3 if something went down. Seems like he'd get that most weeks in a split.

How about 5 to 7 points for Karim for the yardage, no catches because Jennings is in for passing downs, and vulturing TD's as well. Jennings is the big boy here - 6' 1", 225 lbs to Karim's 5'8" and 205 so look for him on 3rd downs and goal line.

Maurie Jones-Drew is 5'8" and 205 pounds, too. Are the Jags going to pull him at the goal line for Jennings, too? It's very possible that Jennings would be the GL back over Karim, but I'd need to see something a little bit more official to that effect than simply listing their height and weight... especially when Karim's height and weight is identical to the second best TD-scoring RB in the entire NFL over the last 4 seasons (and, not coincidentally, the guy he's backing up).

Absolutely not. That's my point... Karim is no MJD. The hypothetical here is, what would happen if MJD went down. Full blown RBBC.

It's a bit muddled right now and if MJD went down there might not be a true handcuff.

But in the long-run/dynasty leagues Karim is the guy to own IMO. He may be the next Turner - in terms of a true backup with starter ability that sits for a few years before he gets his chance.

Running back Maurice Jones-Drew, whose right hand and wrist were swollen Thursday after a sprain Sunday, participated fully in practice Friday.

Running back Rashad Jennings and safety Sean Considine were both limited in practice.
The Florida Times UnionLooks like Karim is going to get the back up role again on Monday night, and MJD is ready to roll. He is overdue for a huge game. Full disclosure - I have all 3 on my FFPC team.

I loooove this attitude, since it has helped me snap up plenty of studs from trading with impatient owners.

Jennings is officially probable for the Monday night game, same as MJD.

Injury Report

The backup picture should get a little clearer on Monday night, hopefully.
With Jennings probable there goes my sneaky pick of the week with Deji!
See if Jennings is active first, but it sure looks likely. Rumor has it that Deji's role on special teams will be expanded to include not only kick returns but also punts. We'll see.

After week 6, it seems pretty safe to say Karim has passed Jennings on the depth chart. Both dressed, Jennings didn't see the field. Karim had 3 carries spelling MJD, as well as 4 balls thrown to him, resulting in 2 catches Make some room on the bench.... I am. See you Jennings !
