much of what you mentioned is normal for the Gmen and an annual occurence

No one mentions Schwartz? I'd put him over Kubiak, Fox and Lewis, who are historically very mediocre. The Lions have had a lot of injuries too, especially in the secondary. It's obviously Harbaugh, though.
You gotta be kidding me. Lions probably don't even make the playoffs if Cutler and Forte don't both go down..
playoffs and which team? huh? which team?Schwartz so deserves credit for his excellent work in Detroit

Schwartz has created an environment in Detroit where his team can't control their own emotions. That has repeatedly hurt them as a team this year. Doesn't sound like COY to me.

I think long time lions fans will take that all day compared to the old attitude of nobody caring enough to even show up. Or win a single game (just 3 years ago).

Last season the 49ers were -1 in takeaway/giveaway differential. This season they are +28. Harbaugh took the 49ers from 6-10 to 13-3. With Alex Smith at QB.
:goodposting: :lmao: at the Green Bay homers trying to discount this achievement. If taking a team that last year had no discipline, no cohesion, and ####ty QB play, and turning that team into an immediate Superbowl contender doesn't win the award, then you might as well just stop handing it out.

Plus, new coach with extremely limited off season. Without Harbaugh's stunning work in SF, I'm cool with either McCarthy or BB, but what Harbaugh has done in SF is epic.

The only credit Schwartz deserves is for how undisciplined his team is..Even Caleb Hanie could just throw it up to Megatron and hope for the best.. ;)

Might want to re-read the posts..Didn't see one Packer homer say Harbaugh didn't deserve the award. My point was I didn't think he deserved it over McCarthy..

Packer homers are making me sick. They want everything, it's disgusting that they act entitled. Most bandwagon fans ever and I did live in Orange County when they had no team and the whole county became Packer fans overnight when they won the Super Bowl, many even pretended they were from Green Bay and I saw one get OWNED (two middle aged women) that was making it up and when pushed admitted they were lying. It's sad.

And on the flip side the haters get annoying too. Rodgers could have thrown a 100 TD's and there would still be some out there that would beg for a reason to give the MVP to someone else. It works both ways.

Well...you are free to leave. But I don't think its wanting everything to think that a coach who took a team to 15-1 and looking good to get to back to back Super Bowls is deserving of coach of the year. And if we want to believe the talk of how great a system for QBs Green Bay is...can we not give credit to the guy who created the system?

He would be deserving any other year, except this year his outstanding performance was trumped by an even better one by Harbaugh.

Funny how you guys want these coaches in there because they had to deal with injuries. McCarthy had 16 guys on the IR last year and won the Superbowl, but STILL no Coach of the Year. This year not only did the Packers not have any Superbowl hangover, but they almost went 16-0. And he still shouldn't get it?
McCarthy should have won it hands down last year. But they are healthy this year and would be completely dominant with you or me coaching the team ... Same goes for the Pats and New Orleans.Coughlin faced a ton of adversity and injuries this year and most importantly I am a a Giant fan so he gets ... and if it's not Coughlin it's the 9er's Harbaugh easily.

History is not on McCarthy's side. Only one coach that led his team to a 15-1 record (it's happened four other times in NFL history) has won Coach of the Year that same year (Ditka in 1985).

Well dang, guess the Packers should of tanked a couple games so McCarthy would have a better chance..

The only way he would have had a chance is if the Packers went 16-0, and even then the nod still goes to Harbaugh.Harbaugh took a team that was 6-10 and didn't just turn it around, but turned it into an immediate Superbowl contender. This team had no swagger left at all under Singletary, and the change from Day 1 was like night and day. He took a quarterback that people were still labeling a bust and turned him around too, something at least a half dozen other coaches tried and failed to do. Smith is not flashy and never will be, but Harbaugh is the only coach to realize Smith's strengths and attempt to play to them. The result? Smith's most mistake-free season by far.Oh, and did I mention all of this occured during a shortened lockout year?Anyone who watched the 49ers last year and this year will tell you that the change the team has seen this year is 100% attributable to Harbaugh and his staff. I can't think of a better qualifier to win this award.McCarthy has obviously done a commendable job, but the fact still remains that he took a Superbowl winner, and basically just kept rolling. I know it sounds like I'm dismissing a fairly big feat, but when you compare it to what Harbaugh has done, it's hard not to.

You obviously haven't seen some of the throws that Stafford has made this season...and somehow he managed to throw 3300+ yards to players not named Calvin.I didn't say Schwartz should win the award, I said I would put him above Fox, Lewis and Kubiak.

Harbaugh did what Mike Nolan and Singletary couldn't do, and that was make the team Baltimore West. It wasn't like he built the team. He had a lot of defensive talent on it, had a run game already there, had a HOF caliber punter left over from the Terry Donahue/Erickson era, and Baalke was a long time scout and was interim GM before getting the official title this past off-season. There really is no remarkable turnaround for Smith outside of being 11 INTS less than 2006, whose current season outside of that stat really isn't any different stat wise from 2006. The 49ers won games without a TD pass while averaging less than 200 yards a game passing all season. They still win games while being poor on 3rd down and in the Red Zone. They won games because they are awesome in the field position game as well as have a Pro Bowl leading scorer Kicker in Akers. They finally have a pass rush which they lacked for years, but the wasn't as bad as people think. They weren't bad in 2008, in fact pretty darn good despite despite the lack of pass rush. He brought Harbaugh football to SF from Stanford. So far it's a great fit.

I'd vote for him as coach of the year for the Detroit Lions. As for the NFL? No way in Hell.

My point exactly. Mike McCarthy made Aaron Rodgers into who he is today. The MVP of the league, and defending Superbowl Champion QB, that posted a 15-1 record this year. That gets ignored in Coach of the year voting, but it shouldn't. Belichick deserved all the credit in the world for making Brady into what he is today as well. That should have earned him several coach of the year awards, yet they always go to the guy that take a mediocre to bad team and makes it to the playoffs but doesn't win it all. Bad system.

Interesting point - it's always impressive to see a coach take a crappy team and turn them into a winner, but it is a fair question to ask what's harder: Turning losers into winners or winners into champions? I wonder what coaches would say.On the other hand isn't CotY a regular-season award? If so then it's always going to be about team turnarounds because the "ultimate step" from winner to champion happens after the regular season.

No, it's not a bad system because it's Coach of the Year as in this year. He didn't mold Rodgers talent this year. He didn't win the Superbowl this year. The only thing that you typed that should count is the 15-1 record, which is great, but doesnt put him above what Harbaugh did this year. It's always going to be harder and more a recognizable accomplishment to take a bad team from the year prior and make them elite than to take an elite team and keep them elite. And Harbaugh not only did that, he did it in a shortened strike year.

Since it is a regular season award for this year, simply subtract this years win total from last years.
You have to take player personnel from year to year into account too though. If the 49ers had gone out and signed Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, and Calvin Johnson, I wouldn't be so quick to credit Harbaugh with most of the team's success and give him the award.

I feel a little how Saints fans must feel in the MVP discussion. My heart says McCarthy, but my head says Jim Harbaugh (tough to argue 13-3 with Alex Smith at QB).

I feel for McCarthy, though. Sometimes the award goes to the most successful coach, and sometimes to the coach who most exceeds expecations. In 2007 McCarthy was the upstart coach who's team most exceeded expectations (13-3 after 8-8 and 4-12 seasons). He lost to the coach who's team was most successful (Belichick's 16-0 Pats). This time he's got the most successful team in the league at an almost as staggering 15-1 record, and he's going to lose to the upstart coach who far exceeded expectations. On top of that he's won 21 of his last 22 games including 3 road playoff games and the Superbowl.

Like Saints hope Drew Brees will one day be recognized for his achievements, I hope the same for McCarthy.

Harbaugh. Not only did he turn around a moribund franchise in one year, he did it with the NFL lockout limiting him before the season started.

Bill Walsh is dead  And Pack Fans--stopy whining. You can have the lousy COY award; I'm sure 49er nation will gladly trade that for the SB you will be winning again this year

Harbaugh will probably be the winner, but gotta give a close second to Kubiak for getting the Texans to 10-6 and a division title despite them being killed by injuries.
I voted for Fox because how many teams start out 1-4 and then make the playoffs? He did a great job of adjusting the offense to Tebow and of getting that Defense to play some great football. He did more with much less than any other HC.

If there is any coach in houston that deserves any credit it is wade phillips. kubes just gets a nod for getting out of the way.

Oops. Fixed. Heart for McCarthy, head for Harbaugh, obviously. I think if McCarthy had gone 16-0 it would be hard not to give it to him. But Harbaugh will win it, and I can't argue against it.

It is a flawed system when guys like Linde Infante, Wayne Fontes and Ray Rhodes win the award without ever going to a Super Bowl. Yet Mike Holmgren has never won the award and he's taken 2 different teams to 3 superbowls.

What system? It's voted on by AP sports writers, nothing more. You could start your own COY award if you wanted, the Sporting News has one too.

Mike Munchak deseves a brief mention. The team exceeded expectations, and at times looked pretty good, despite CJ not being CJ for most of the season.

Mike McCarthy took a reigning Super Bowl Champion to 5 more regular season wins than the previous year. That has to count for something, right?

If McCarthy had gone 16-0 like Bill B. did in 2007, then he should be coach of the year. But he didn't, so it has to go to Harbaugh.I think Harbaugh is a hell of a coach, but I don't think it should be given out just because he turned a franchise around. I think the improvement for the 49ers is a combination of Singletary being an awful head coach, and Harbaugh being a good one. The main improvement with Harbaugh is I think he's just done a great job of using the talent on that team correctly.
