Who is the most overpaid athlete of all-time? (1 Viewer)

fantasycurse42

Footballguy Jr.
Sam Bradford was the first name that came to my mind, guy has been paid $78M in 6 years while throwing 78 TDs, interesting stat I learned today.

Then I thought of Bobby Bonilla - not only was he overpaid as a player, but he has some crazy deal with the Mets that is basically paying him over $1M a year until 2035 as a deferred payment on owed salary. He was still okay as a player though, so I don't know if he tops Bradford.

Haynesworth comes to mind, although IIRC he didn't collect close to his entire contract. His ft ### did pick up the guaranteed money of around $40M for doing nothing.

I'm sure there are some NBA guys well deserving of being considered here too.

What say you, most overpaid athlete ever?

JaMarcus Russell and Ville Leino

Bonilla was a producer, Bradford led his team to playoffs and still going.  Haynesworth is top 5 though.

I hate to say it because I love the guy, but as a Los Angeles Angels fan, if it's not Albert Pujols yet, it will soon be over the next 8 years or so, when he continues to receive 30 million dollars a year. Simply the worst contract in major league history.

Haynesworth made 36 million for two seasons with the Skins. 18 mil for 2 horrible years

Per Pathetic Game $1,800,000

Per Accidental Sack: $5,538,461

Per Tackle: $857,142

I read tonight that Pujols is still owed something like $125mil thru 2021.

Also, Haynesworth couldn't/wouldn't jump through the hoops pass simple conditioning tests. Like bare minimum stuff. I believe he failed one because he couldn't get off the toilet in time

Russell made $40MM over 3 years and threw 18 TD passes.

Ville Leino made $23MM over 3 years with the Sabres and scored 10 goals in 137 games.

JaMarcus Russell collected $36.4 million for 354 completions and 18 TDs.  That's $103k per completion, and $2 million per TD.

On the bright side, he ate $741k worth of pregame hashbrowns.

Those stories about him pooping and puking during those drills are some of the best in sports.  He just completely shut it down after signing that contract.  :lmao:

Bonilla was the first that came to mind, but this should be an interesting thread.

Haynesworth and Russell. Oh, man.

Greatest salary dump of all-time? Could be Beckett, Crawford and Gonzalez in '12. That worked out really well for the Red Sox the next year.

Bonilla also received $500k a year from the Orioles through 2015.

But Bonilla wasn't a turd, he actually had some pretty good years in NY and the payouts he still gets are from a buyout.

So, to recap, by renegotiating Bobby Bonilla’s contract in 2000 to pay him $1.19 million annually from 2011 to 2035, the Mets:

1) Achieved the financial flexibility necessary to acquire players that put them in the World Series that season.
2) Got rid of a massive headache.
3) Earned a draft pick they used on seven-time All-Star David Wright.
4) Made a reasonably shrewd financial decision.
5) Became an annual laughingstock.

The names will be skewed by the more recent big money.  Some good ones on the list.  Brady Anderson always comes to mind.  50 juice filled HR's, signs big deal (at the time), then proceeds to not crack 19 homers 3 out of the next 4 years.

Darren Dreifort has some unbelievable innings/salary stats.

872 innings/63mill

This pre-2005.

It's more like 872 innings for 120mill in todays' mlb pay rate.

Tristin Thompson................prove me wrong and do something here the next month big guy

What's vexing about Bradford, though, over the likes of JaMarcus Russell, is that he didn't just get one payday which was an epic mistake. He has done just enough to keep being handed new 10+ million dollar contracts. The latest (2 years for $22 million) is an indication of how crazy NFL personnel guys are about QBs. So Sam will keep raking it in even though he defines mediocre. He's my vote too.

Love Pujols too, but he's definitely overpaid by the Angles. I don't fault him for jumping at that much money, but he was never going to live up to that contract.

On the lower end of the scale, but even worse from a "bang for the buck" side...Jerome James got $30 million from the Knicks which was still a big chunk of money in the NBA at the time ($6MM/year). He averaged 2.5 points a game as a Knick. That was a big drop from the 5 pts/2.5 rebs per he averaged the year before.

Matt Flynn made about $17.5MM after that random start in GB where he threw 6 TDs. He started 5 games after that.

Those are pretty good.  There have been lots of rookies who flopped.  Like Bosworth in his day signed a record rookie contract and never produced anything with the exception of gettin run over by Bo Jackson.

It depends on how you define most overpaid.  Verlander had some awesome years, but ever since he signed 7 years for $180 million he has been average at best.....34-34, 3.93 ERA, 1.28 WHIP.

JaMarcus Russell?

But if we are speaking right now: Sam Bradford. The only QB who has made nearly $100mil, hasn't really played a full season in his whole career, and still complains.

A lot of baseball writers consider Mike Hampton to have one of the worst. For the Orioles, Albert Belle did well in his first three years, then got hurt and crippled the ability for Peter Angelos to pay anyone else...for a long time.

I did not know that was a timed event.  Must have been a fairly comprehensive conditioning test.
An older Mike Shanahan had become very aware of the importance of digestive health while he was in DC.

--I think it was a sprint drill, rest 3 minutes, then do another sprint. He finished the first in time, and then went to the crapper for 10 minutes or something. Failed.
