Idea spawned by something I heard on sports radio today.

Put together your perfect NFL football broadcast team to handle a whole Sunday of football. Pick 3 game time broadcast teams each consisting of an announcer, a color commentator, and a sideline reporter. Choose another 4 announcers to handle pregame, halftime and wrap up, with 1 host and 3 analysts. Anyone you choose, it's assumed you get them in their prime.

Mine:



Team 1: Madden and Summerall, with Melissa Stark. A pairing that worked perfectly, no need to change them. And Melissa who will forever report the sidelines of my heart. :wub: There will never be another as perfect as she.

Team 2: **** Enberg and Kirk Herbstreit, with Erin Andrews. I'm going out on a limb with Kirk that he'll work as well in the NFL game as in college, but I think he could handle it no problem. Enberg in the 70s and 80s was one of my favorite announcers. Andrews both the looks and the sports IQ.

Team 3: Brad Nessler and Don Meredith, with Andrea Kramer. Nessler has always been a favorite, but I'm not sure if this pairing will have the chemistry Meredith had with Howard Cosell. I just don't want to have to listen to Howard though. Momentous career, just was never a fan of his. Kramer... she just does a good job. Solid if uninspired choice.



Studio Team: Dan Patrick, Rod Woodson, Tony Dungy, Howie Long. There are a number of good hosts I could argue for, but have always been a Dan Patrick fan. Rod Woodson is probably my all-time favorite NFL commentator of any type for his work on NFL Network. Dungy and Howie long are both excellent, level headed guys. They both just barely made the list over Tom Jackson and Marshall Faulk.

Team 2 Joe Buck, Brian Billick, Suzie Kolber

Team 3 Mike Tirico, Gus Johnson, Melissa Stark

The perfect Saints Sunday afternoon broadcast:

Howard Cosell, Buddy Diliberto and Archie Manning.

Hap Glaudi does the post-game, doing his Gentilly Yat Harry Caray imitation. Love it.

The Bears announcer is good, I like how he gets excited at the right times. Al Michaels couldn't get excited if his life depended on it and I'd probably die happy if I never heard Joe Buck's voice.

And where the hell is Gus Johnson?? Is he finally doing Fox games this year?

No way I can come up with four lists at the moment, but I know Charlie Jones would be one of the play-by-play guys.

There was nothing like hearing him call the Raiders/Chargers late game back in the day.

I"m old school.

Give me Curt Gowdy and Al DeRogatis. Being a Raider fan, you knew it was a BIG game when those two called the game.

 
Jaws, Nessler, Vermiel. It only happened once, but it was the best damn football broadcast I have seen.

 
I cant come up with 4 atm, but Jaws for sure.

Absolutely no Madden, Ditka, Collinsworth or Gruden.

Team 1: Madden and Summerall with Bonnie Bernstein. I really didn't want to copy your booth team - so I thought and thought. But I just couldn't think of anyone I liked more in their prime. Sure, in the latter years a lot of people made fun of them - but if you didn't hear them in their prime you really missed out. No one that I remembered made fun of John and Pat when they started in the booth. It was amazing to hear them. As far as the sideline reporter - I've never thought they were too important. If I have to have one, though, I think Bonnie has the perfect combination of looks and knowledge. I know she does sports radio sometimes and she really knows her s*#t. She's a research hound, from what I hear, as well. Makes me like her more.I don't want to go as in depth as to pick a second and third team but I'll jump to the Studio Team:

Dan Patrick - I agree with you here as well. I notice when he hosts Football Night that he's not afraid to jump in with questions that aren't written on his card. He'll push his cohorts to expand on a statement if he feels it needs it. He'll ask dissenting questions, too. I like that. Yet when the Q&A session is over - he's smooth as butter.

Trent Dilfer - I don't like him as a broadcaster as much as I like him as a studio analyst. I like his insight on QBs and although he's a little excitable I think he'd fit in well with the calming influence of -

Tony Dungy - Agree with you here, again. I don't think I'd have chosen him except for the fact that I wanted someone overly calm to balance out Trent. I can't think of anyone with inside connections who knows the game better than Dungy.

Tom Jackson - I need a guy who's going to favor the defense, smash mouth football and has an old school mentality. He's not always serious (he laughs a lot, too) but will stick to his guns if he feels he's right. Speaking of laughing, I know I'm not supposed to have a fourth guy, but I have to...

Art Donovan - I love this guy. He'd keep everyone laughing and he's probably the only person I could sit and watch talk about football for an entire show (I wish I could find the 'Art Donovan Show' somewhere. I used to watch it on a local cable feed). If you don't know who he is then look up "Art Donovan on Letterman" for a few clips of him. He's funny as ####. He was Goose before Goose - and he was much better at it.

I would take Madden and Gruden over Collinsworth. I though CC was OK when I only heard him once or twice a year..the more I hear him the more annoying his voice is.

:goodposting: Charlie Jones screams AFC West. What I wouldn't give to go back in time and watch a Raiders/Chargers gamed called by Charlie Jones and Todd Christensen.

:thumbup: With Madden/Summerall on CBS/Fox you had the perfect pairings for a Sunday afternoon. I also like the pick of Curt Gowdy. Great pipes and made for NFL football. As a secondary game broadcaster I'd take Don Criqui. Some great calls during the 80's when I was cutting my teeth.
 
I'm sure this opinion will be in the minority, but here goes. Although I didn't approve of his Favre-ish act that ended his run at ESPN, I'd put Sean Salisbury on the team as one of the in-studio analysts.

Loved his anything-but-vanilla opinions and enthusiasm for the role.

NFC team – Madden and Summerall. No one even close. Summerall’s voice is football. Madden was the first color guy to really breakdown the plays as they happened. Melissa Stark, I agree is the best on sidelines, or anywhere else.

AFC team – tie - Curt Gowdy and Al DeRogatis and **** Enberg and Merlin Olsen. Gowdy was a pro. I always remember Enberg saying “OH MY ELLLWAY”. I will put the current Sunday night girls as the sidelines, TaFoya and Kramer.

Honorable mention – Ray Scott, Charlie Jones, Lindsey Nelson, Don Criqie (sp), Mike Tirico, and Al Michaels as announcers and Dan Dierdorf, Ron Jaworski, Tom Brookshire, Todd Christianson, and Jon Gruden as color analysts.

Studio Team – Brent Musberger, Irv Cross, and Phyllis George. I am keeping the actual teams together. Brent was the best, “You are looking Live at Lambeau Field”.

Best on TV today – Al Michaels, play by play and Troy Aikman, commentary with Suzie Kolber on the sidelines.

 
jim irwin and max mcgee were the best and always will be and yuo can take that right to the bank and tell your grandpappy he is a brohan among brohans bam i win this thread

:goodposting: As a Seahawks fan that has to suffer through Warren Moon I'll also add him to the list.I know some people don't like Mike Mayock but I think he's great personally. Plus I love his call of the BeastQuake.

:goodposting: That's who I grew up with in the 70s..Pat Sumerall and Tom Brookshier preceded by the NFL Today show hosted by Musberger/Cross...and Jimmy da Greek. Oh and the former Miss America....good times. Summerall/Brookshier will always be my favorite crew.

Aikman is a nice guy and all, but let me know when he says something you don't already know.He will almost never get technical or break down interior line play. It's all about the skill positions.

Agreed. Gruden may be chock full of hyperbole at times, but he makes the game exciting with his enthusiasm. I've actually began enjoying MNF alot more in recent years. Madden is just pure nostalgia. Sometimes he'll tell a completely irrelevant asinine story, but other times he'll have a tidbit that only someone like him with tremendous insight into the game can point out.
 
I can only think of two person teams of broadcasters.

John Madden and Al Michaels

John Madden and Pat Summerall

Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford.

Very much miss Madden.
