Rather than comment on "stud players" (rd1-4 material) that imo will blow up and lets be honest every player in the top 50 is quite capable of elite seasons by one measure or another... let's take a look at guys that can be had in the mid rounds that have potential for double digit TDs from WR/RBs or are in the right situation to greatly exceed their draft position.
While preparing for my favorite league, I often do a mock draft every week or 2 with the Draft Dominator, using the Projections Dominator (and averaging 5 experts for the most part). Knowing the positional tendencies and favored players of my good friends, often lets my final mock draft of the summer be accurate on about 25% of the actual player picks, and mostly accurate on the positional picks (did Owner A pick a RB - WR - QB - WR in rounds A-Z, etc).
So anyways, the positional rankings are just what the Draft Dominator gave me with my 10 man league's scoring rules (basically Yahoo! with return yards). So i went through the results and a few "BLOW UP PLAYERS" players of interest stuck out to me.
06.10 RB25 Thomas Jones NYJ/5 Tony
** Jones is a great candidate for a RB3, or a RB2 if you build WR/QB depth before nabbing your 2nd RB. Let's imagine the Jets are closer to their playoff run of 2006, so they're at least a 7-10 win team. Someone has to score TDs in New York besides Coles & Leon Washington on special teams. Most projections have Jones getting about 1000 yards rushing, imagine if he puts up 8-10 TD with that. That would make Jones more like RB8-RB15 instead of RB25. For teams with a super-stud RB1 (LT, AP, Jackson, Westbrook) that may feel comfortable waiting for a RB2 and instead choose to get stud QB/WR/WR/TE in rounds 2-5, Jones is a good guy to target in rounds 5-8.
09.01 WR38 Anthony Gonzalez Ind/4 VMI Cadets
** It took Reggie Wayne into year3 to break WR20. Both Wayne & Gonzalez are Colts 1st round picks, and this franchise rarely misses on a 1st round pick. If Marvin Harrison is out, Gonzalez will shoot up the ADP charts & rankings. But if come August & Harrison looks like he will try to play in 2008, Gonzalez will be a guy you can grab in the WR30 range that is capable of a WR15-20 ceiling on a potent colts offense. A great find as your 1st WR off the fantasy bench.
09.08 RB33 Rudi Johnson Cin/8 P-MEN
** Remember last year when Rudi was the safest stud RB pick after LT? The guy was reliable for 1300yds & 12 tds. If you're willing to take a chance on Rudi and he regains that stud RB form, your lineup will have a solid RB2. If you took a gamble on Rudi but arent sure he can sustain, but he gets off to a fast start you may even consider TRADING / selling high and turning him into a stud WR/TE.
11.01 QB13 Derek Anderson Cle/5 P-MEN
**
Yes the Browns have an evil schedule. But a Pro Bowl season, a combined 32 tds, a summer working his weapons could make Anderson a guy with a floor of 25TDs and a ceiling much higher. Now in some drafts Anderson is a guy that will go in the QB5-8 range, so it depends if your league has any BROWNS homers or people that are just high on DA. But if Anderson is on the board in rounds 8,9,10, or 11--this guy is a great value play. Don't let the Shark who is holding off on QBs to build the rest of his lineup draft Anderson as his #1 QB!!
12.01 QB17 Jake Delhomme Car/9 VMI Cadets
**
Great QBBC candidate. If he survives 16 games, this guy will get the job done in yardage & TDs. His injury concerns are what hold him in the QB15-20 range.
12.08 TE15 Zach Miller Oak/5 Generals
**
It seems like all the stud TE's are under age 29, so how can there possibly be another elite TE to emerge? I tend to like Owen Daniels as a TE to target in drafts, but Miller has a great situation and from watching this guy play a few times in 2007, he seems like a fluid receiver that will flourish and his production will only be limited by his QB play. Assuming JaMarcus Russell can manage to live up to his #1 draft pick status and play like a top15 QB in the next year or 2, Miller will be a big part of his success. Miller seems like a great player to grab as an early TE2 (esp. if you take Heap or Shockey & want a reliable insurance policy), or if you are ballsy take Miller as a late TE1, but dont wait too long!
15.04 RB48 Chris Brown Hou/8 Dave - CDs
**
Someone in Houston will have to tote the rock. Chris Brown runs fast & strong, and his physical conditioning is always top notch. If things fall into place for the Texans, Kubiak may be giving Brown a few hundred yard games this season.
