Who's Benching Favre in Week 16 (1 Viewer)

Loomba

Footballguy
Good ol' No. 4 has emerged as a must start as the season has progressed, but when it counts most, he's facing some tough weather on the road in Chicago that makes him a dicey start, imho.

Weather.com reports winds of 28 mph with temperatures of 23 F that will feel really cold at 6 F. Accuweather.com reports similar temperatures with winds around 24 mph gusting to 36 mph.

This can't bode well for the passing game and Green Bay knows they have a pretty good runner in Ryan Grant.

FWIW, I am seriously looking at starting Palmer over Favre this week. Cincy will be windy too. Winds around 22 mph according to Weather.com (23 mph gusting to 39 mph according Accuweather.com), but it will quite a bit warmer at around 36 F and feeling like 25 F (46 F feeling like 32 F according Accuweather.com). This could be a high scoring game and Palmer has already come out and said they are going to be loose and try to knock Cleveland off their pedestal.

Anyways, just some info to ponder. Looks like weather will be a factor in Week 16 again and we will have some fantasy GTD's on our hands. Interested to here what others are considering doing.

I cannot recall cold weather ever having a bad effect on Favre. In fact IIRC it is ushualy an advantage for him.

The Bears offense is terrible. They will do nothing. The Vikings were able to turn the ball over 4 times against the Bears and still win the game.

I think Green Bush will crush them.. especially in cold weather.. and Favre will have a great game.

Incidentaly I have Favre and Carson on the same team and I am rolling with Favre. The weather does not scare me. I would be curious to hear any good reasons why I should reconsider this however.

It's not as if Favre hasn't played half his career in the freezing cold weather of Lambeau. The wind is a bit of a concern but I don't really see it affecting the short crossing patterns that will chew up the Chicago defense.

Couple of things. Favre is an excellent cold weather and wind QB because he's got gigantic hands and a rocket arm. If you ever get to the Packer Hall of Fame, put your hand on the football that has the outline of Brett's hand on it. It's gigantic. Him throwing a football is like most people throwing a softball. This is why he's able to do a lot of the things he is. So think about throwing a softball in the snow or rain. It doesn't make a lot of difference.

As for the wind, this effects everybody but Brett's passes sizzle. They bust and dislocate fingers. He may still have the strongest throwing arm in the league. The winds won't make his passes sail like some others.

I started Big Ben over Favre if that counts.......
I thought about it, but went with Favre.Too much riding on these last few games with homefield in the mix.I think GB spends alot of time in the Chicago side of the field on Sunday.Favre may not throw up 300 yards, but 2-3 TD's is certainly reachable.I will say 26/32 for 260 2TD's and 1 int.

I know CBS Sportsline isn't the best source, but I thought I'd post this, for what it's worth, for your consideration:Brett Favre, QB GBNews: Mr. Most Passing Yards, Brett Favre, will try for his 23rd win over the Chicago Bears in Week 16 when the two teams meet for the second time this season. In their earlier meeting, Favre threw for 322 yards, but threw two picks vs. only one interception. In fact, since Lovie Smith's defense got rolling in 2005, Favre has thrown just two touchdowns and 11 interceptions (two returned for scores) against the Bears over that five-game span. The Bears clearly have a game plan they use vs. Favre and will attempt to derail the Packers' plans for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs on Sunday. Analysis: Favre will likely have to deal with some nasty weather in Week 16 if he wants to beat the Bears yet again, as there is a 50 percent chance of snow scheduled for Sunday in the Windy City, but that won't bug Favre compared to the Bears' secondary. We wouldn't be surprised if the Packers handed off a bunch, much like they have in previous weeks, and that would go double if there was indeed snow on Sunday. Think twice before starting him as there's clearly recent history that supports a bad outing for Favre. (Ok, so reading the portion of this commentary that says "threw two picks vs. only one interception" would appear to indicate CBS Sportsline needs a better editor. Also, there's no mention of the fact that Chicago's defense this year has not performed as expected. In any event, thought I'd just add this post as something to consider).

Favre's stats vs the Bears during the Lovie Smith era (2 TD, 11 picks) + the return of Vasher + Chicago wind = McNabb in the dome vs Saints pitiful secondary.

I think that has less to do with Lovie...and much more to do with it being 2 of Favre's worst years as a pro (2005 and 2006).This year, he was pretty much shredding Chicago's secondary all night.Had the one moronic pass to Urlacher...the 2nd INT was in the last ditch effort with 13 seconds left and no timeout.

COLD WEATHER EXCELLENCE

Born and raised in the South, goes against conventional wisdom by performing well in the cold

At home, now holds a 40-5 record including playoffs when the kickoff temperature is 34 degrees or below; possesses an impressive 90.7 passer rating in those 45 cold-weather games, based on 890 completions in 1,441 attempts (61.8 percent) for 10,242 yards, 79 TDs and 37 INTs

Nice. :headbang:

it will be short and controlled. And the guy who compared Favre throwing a football to you throwing a softball is pretty accurate. Favre will be fine in this weather. Dont waiver - he got you this far. Part of the reason Favre is a legend is because of his ability to light it up in this kind of nasty weather.

I'm leaning toward McNabb over Favre. After seeing what crappy weather did to Brady, Eli, and DAnderson's stats last week you have to consider sitting him.

Some very good commentary and points made above. Favre's arm strength and big mitts does mitigate the effect of the weather.

For me, the decision to bench Favre and roll with Palmer might rest with what happens in the Dallas - Carolina game tonight. My opponent is already up about 45-0 on me after Big Ben and Jeff Reed big games the other night. He also has Witten. If Witten has a big game (i.e. scores a TD), I may need to gamble a bit by putting Palmer and Chris Henry in my lineup and hoping for a couple of scores from that tandem. Otherwise, I'd be rolling with Favre and D. Bowe as my WR3.

If the weather worsens or improves materially in either Chicago or Cincy, that will sway my decision too.

Fun times!

Was going to play Favre, but rolling with Romo instead due to the weather. A little leary of Romo's thumb and have to have positive points, so I was going to go with the GB slinger. Hoping instead that Romo can hang tough.

Favre over Schaub

Also starting McNabb and hope he can help Favre out..Keep in mind the wind won't be blowing 45 mph for 3 straight hours..Heck it will probably help him for 2 quarters throw 90 yard TD passes.

GB's been most effective when doing the short passes and letting their WR's run after the catch (which I believe as a team they lead the league in). I don't know how much the wind will really affect that.

As long as Favre doesn't try to overdo things (and force things downfield like he's been doing recently on a more frequent basis), he'll be fine. Even if they do run Grant more, they still like to throw quite a bit near the GL.

slightly bias, but I'm might think that this would hurt Jennings owners and help Driver/Lee/Grant owners. . . .still a strong passing game will be needed to win, but will be shorter passes. . . . .just a thought.

Then again, I'm sure there will still be 1 or 2 shots down the field that invisible Jennings will get a chance to grab. . . . how does that guy get so open sometimes?

I benched him for Ben, who was only 1 point behind him on the season. Early returns are favorable.

Didn't he start 34-0 or something like that meaning he is running about .500 in the last 10 or so?

As stated, my other option is Palmer. It doesn't appear the weather in Cincy is going to be much better. A bit warmer but windy too.

Probably going to stick with Favre unless the weather gets really ugly in Chicago.

I woke up this morning and the winds were absolutly nuts and the first thing that came to my mind was that I have to bench Favre for Cutler. Well in the last 45 minutes there has only been a few heavy gusts and this is weather he can handle. This morning, I dont think anyone could handle it. My dogs couldnt.

Granted I am 76 min out of chicago.

I feel much better now and will be starting #4.

Favre is 10-1 in Chicago in the last 11 games. More short passes and RAC and more Ryan Grant. I like the Pack defense in this game too.

Weather appears to be materially worse in Chitown than Cintown.

Probably going to roll with Palmer after all. <<crosses himself twice>>

I'm driving myself nuts w/ the weather situation w/ these 2 games...I'm already starting Palmer over Cutler (SD), and am currently waffling big-time with D.Lee currently over C.Henry.

Appreciate any reassurance, tx and g/l to all

Benching him for P. Manning. Before the start of the season, you may say well ya, that's easy to do.

But for at least 1/2 of not more of the season I've started Farve over P. Manning.

I don't like starting Manning when there's nothing to play for but Manning's had success vs. Houston, the weather conditions are perfect compared to Farve playing in a wind storm.

If Farve outperforms Manning in terms of fantasy points today, then so be it just trying to play percentages here I guess.

Starting Favre over Warner. Just can't bring myself to bench the guy that is my favorite all time player and that I've been starting since I traded for him way back early in the season.

Favre said it's the worst he's ever seen it. Said he'd be happy to complete 5 passes today. Playing him is suicidal..
