Who's your late round 2nd baseman? (1 Viewer)

I tend to punt 2nd base until late. I ended up taking Scooter Gennett last night as an upside play but that could be an early cut if Weeks holds him off some.

Anyone you like to out up consistent numbers? I don't need a superstar, just someone to contribute a run here or there.

Daniel Murphy? I don't know how late he goes but he seems to be ranked like #10 or below for 2B and I think he can give you Matt Carpenter-lite numbers.

I'm not sold on Gennett. He could end up as a platoon player and could conceivably get benched if Rickie Weeks gets hot.

If you're looking for consistent production, there are guys like Neil Walker, Howie Kendrick and Daniel Murphy who may be on the board after young guys like Profar, Rendon and Wong are taken. Dustin Ackley seemed like he may have figured things out in the second half last year.

I like Kelly Johnson in OBP leagues. He should still have 2B eligibility. He's at risk of being platooned as well but could be a cheap source of 20/10.

I hate Dee Gordon but you can use him to bank some SB while he still has a job.

I like Walker and Murphy as shallow mixed guys. Deeper leagues, I like Dee (if he's eligible) or KJ or Ackley, or even deeper than that, Ryan Flaherty from the O's or Derek Dietrich from the Marlins.

why not both?

I'm targeting one or maybe two of Murphy, Profar, Johnson, Ackley, Rendon cheap in my auction (we start 2 2Bs).

Dan Uggla putting up 273/432/606 in spring training.

Probably not worth drafting unless you're in a really deep league (and an OBP league) but worth keeping an eye on.

I've seen a bit of Javier Baez and he looks like he could be pretty good. Sounds like the Cubs will start him out in AAA to get more experience at 2b and then bring him up to take the starting job relatively soon if he continues to succeed there.

Yeah, the Cubs have nothing at 2B that will stand in his way. It's just a matter of what they think is best for Baez's development. His plate discipline isn't at an MLB level yet but with 37 HRs in the minors last season he's got big upside.

Rickie Weeks is OPSing over 1.000 this spring. Gennett hasn't hit well at all. As far as I can tell from the box scores, they haven't been platooning. They've just been alternating starts with a little Irving Falu on the side.

The Brewers may be showcasing Weeks in hopes of a trade but I could see this position being a fantasy mess with unpredictable playing time. Tying up two roster slots for middling MI production seems like more trouble than it's worth in all but the deepest leagues.

I am happy that so far I have not needed to dive deep into the well at middle infielder. One more to swim through. Infield is an even bigger priority than usual this year.

Slightly off subject...but what will they do with Alcantara then? Ship out Castro or play one at 3B? Good problem to have down the line I suppose.

one of them will move to third if they are all healthy and hitting.

At least until Kris Bryant shows up. That team is seriously loaded with prospects.

Olt has a post hype sleeper scent to him too.

Olt has played one game at 3B this spring. There aren't any public advanced fielding metrics available for MiLB but his RF and FLD% numbers are below average. Hopefully his shoulder problems are behind him but a 3B needs to be able to make the throws.

Valbuena has had a good spring and definitely has the glove to handle the position. I think Olt starts the year in Iowa so he can play regularly.

Valbuena is a utility infielder. I don't know who he is holding the spot warm for, but whoever it is needs to get to Chicago soon.

I haven't been following the Olt situation too closely, but I figured they were looking at him to maybe replace him mid season and if unsuccessful they would transition him to corner outfield. If successful they wouldn't need to rush Bryant so much or consider moving a middl infielder out of position.

They have a lot of options regardless, should be fun to follow.

Mike Olt update: 2 errors in the same inning at 3B yesterday. 3 unearned runs ended up scoring.
And Olt makes the 25 man. His time early might be sporadic if his shoulder is still a concern. But valbuena isn't going to keep him off the field unless Olt flops or is injured.
