Why are the FLorida Marlins building a new stadium? (1 Viewer)

Don't usually care enough to post an entire thread but the Mrs and I are watching the game tonight because we were thinking about going Wed Night to the game. They start panning aroudn the stadium and there can't be 10,000 people in the stands, this is absurd. It's the opeing of the season, Marlins have won their 1st 2 series in dramatic fashion, close games, and no one is there tonight?

There really might not even be 5,000 people in the stands, what a disgrace and I can assure you that once everyone has passed thru the new baseball stadium that no one will want to come anymore. Dolphin Stadium is the easiest place to get in and out of, never been to one stadium anywhere college or pro that was easier to get into than Dolphin Stadium...Hwy run right into it, couldn't get any easier.

Just a waste of money, this team is not going to fill up a stadium. 2 World Series Titles over the last 12 years, team is winning, season just opened so you would think the thirst for baseball would be high, they kept a lot of their good players, just do not get this city. Don't tell me history, they built a winner here a couple times, you can't win the World Series every year unless you're the Yankees.

I dunno...is it presently in a bad location? Almost everybody here agrees that the Rays will be better when they get closer to Tampa (and out of the dump of a dome they are in now).

:goodposting: Far worse than LA, for instance, whose only crime is they don't care enough to show up on time. But, at least they show.I don't know what the bull#### problem with the people down there is, but they don't get sports, let alone baseball, so why on earth reward them with a brand new ballpark that they'll just piss away with ####ty attendance, anyway?

The location of the new stadium will be where the old Orange Bowl was...its close to downtown Miami but people here don't support spit. A lot of business suffers in and around downtown Miami so I don't buy that the stadium being closer is going to help. Dolphin Stadium sits right on the Dade/Broward border, easy to get in and out of. No one from North Broward is going to come down and catch a Marlins game. There are a lot of people that have settled in down here but I just don't buy that they will support the new stadium beyond just the opening thrill of the new stadium.

I would assume that MLB and the Marlins owners would have done studies/surveys determining whether it was worth spending all that money for a new ballpark. If it didn't seem like a worthwhile investmet, I'm sure MLB would have no issue with relocating them somewhere baseball would definitely thrive.

Question for the masses, are they using taxpayers money for construction and if so was it put to a vote in Miami-Dade county? That right there could tell you ofthe fans really would support it.

Plus they're changing the name to the Miami Marlins, so maybe that's the fix that will draw people to the park?! :)

You do know, if you build it....

The Marlins have a deep fan base and it is only getting better, imo. You gotta remember the Marlins are only 17 years old and have had a tumoltuous history. I have ton to add on this but my main point would be that the fans are there. The Marlins do well on tv. They draw a strong viewership. Top half of the league if I'm not mistake. Additionally they do well with ads on tv and radio. The issue w/ pro player is that it is in the middle of nowhere. You have nothing to do within walking distance of the stadium. The new stadium will tap into to huge markets imo. First, is the little havana area. While these older Cuban's aren't rich they have sufficient money to go games. I think they don't go to Pro Player because these are neighborhood people. They just tend to not travel out of their neighborhood. They also don't want to make the trip and risk insane heat or rain. They just aren't going to do it. Second, is the downtown corporations. The suites will be sold out. The good seats will be sold out. You'll still also tap into the out of town market for Boston, Philly, and NY games because downtown has a huge population of people from these regions. I think the new stadium will make a huge difference.
