Why can`t Tatum Bell sieze the job? (1 Viewer)

This is puzzling to me. Having seen Bells potential and Denvers blocking scheme it is hard to believe that Tater can`t win the starting job once and for all.

A undrafted rookie and a fat guy who has never done much are his main challengers. Is the Rat playing mind games with Tater?

the question is, why does everyone ASSUME he can win the job, when Shanahan has REPEATEDLY stated that he prefers Bell to carry 10-15 times a game . . .

The door has been wide open for Tatum for the second year in a row. No games by Shanny - he just doesn't seem to fully trust him in his system.

He's not sufficiently motivated? :boxing: ;)

I had Bell last year, and he was a great pickup for me. Almost always gave me some good points. I think it comes down to durability. Is he a 20+ carry back? Shanny tried using him more and he didn't seem up to up. Bell may be, at best, a 10-15 touch guy, subbing in for a bruiser.

Bell may be a good spot guy for you, but at this time, I would not draft him too high.

plenty of discussion on this in the Bronco trainincg camp thread. If you have the time, there is some excellent insight as to why Tatum can't carry the load.

B/c Shanny hates him.

I don't know why we get these unintelligent posts (I didn't think this thread was about whether or not Bell was a good start in a flex position...) when I think it's been said over the course of the top couple:

1) he's in the wrong system to be a #1

2) he can't seem to carry the ball 20+ a game

I think it's clear that yes, Tatum is very talented... however he has issues hanging onto the ball and he is clearly in the wrong system. The Denver offense is designed for a back like Terrell Davis to have success... which is exciting news for Mike Bell who has been compared to T.D. all of camp. He even declined the #30 saying he doesn't deserve it.

Anyways, Tatum is an outside runner, he can't run inside. In fact, if you read the Bronco's training camp thread you'll see that Shanny actually scolded Tatum for running up the middle rather than cut outside. He clearly wants to use Tatum just as he did last year- a change of pace back that'll get 10 carries a game, cut it outside, and hopefully average 6-7 yards per carry. I think Tatum is most effective in this role and he should be happy for it. He's as productive as a 10 touch a game back in Denver as he would be as a #1 starter on any other team in the league. Yeah. I said it.

Unless Mike Bell completely self destructs, you'll definately see the same thing you saw last year with Anderson and Tatum. Remember, last year everyone said that Tatum would take the starting role from Anderson after it was given to him in camp. Hell, I even said that and I think I drafted Tatum... Anderson never let go of that starting job and both RBs were effective

Most people base Bell's "potential" on the fact that he's a home run hitter. That's great if you want a Mark McGwire, a career .260 hitter with lots of HRs.

I read TC reports which state what a "great" practice Tatum had because he broke a big 30 yard TD run. In that same TC report from another source, I'll read he was hit often behind the LOS, ran up the back of his blockers, and didn't show much power to move the pile.

Shanahan wants a Tony Gwynn: a career .330 hitter with about as many career HRs as McGwire had in any good 3 year stretch. Also had about 1/4 of the SOs of McGwire.

If Shanny happens to get a guy who does both (Portis), so much the better.

I'd say 15 carries is winning the job...If not how many carries will the winner get?

Is it really important to be a starter? Does Willie Parker being a 'starter' imply Parker is worth more?

Willie Parker - 2005

17.00 rushing attempts a game

80.13 rushing yards per game

1.20 receptions per game

14.53 receiving yards per game

0.33 touchdowns per game

Tatum Bell - 2005

11.53 rushing attempts a game

61.40 rushing yards per game

1.20 receptions per game

6.93 receiving yards per game

0.53 touchdowns per game

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With my league scoring, Parker scored 6.713 ppg and Tatum scored 6.3886 ppg.

Just throwing this out there in regards to precedent of a back being called 'a starter'.

I suspect Tatum could be the best running back (Fantasy wise) on the team, but still not be the starter. I see Bell's position secure; he will at least be the change of pass back and will consistently get his 10 to 15 carries a game.

I can see the 'starter' role being shared between Dayne and Mike Bell.
