why did shanny draft T.Bell anyway (1 Viewer)

It seems that he always gets someone in his system that will WORK. Late round people especially. Kubiak does it too a la wali lundy.

Why did Shanny spend a 2nd round pick on someone who he doesn't think can take the rock the whole game in Tatum Bell? And if he thought he would eventually learn when he drafted him, why isn't he just saying: "Give him time" vs. "He dances too much and won't start for me".

Just something that I've been thinking about ...

I get the impression from Shanahan that he wouldn't start Barry Sanders in his prime either. He's not a straight ahead runner who's going to bull for a first down, so he can't be a full time back.

Why did the Chargers draft Ryan Leaf?
This is different. Shanny drafted Tatum knowing he was a shifty back. Its not like the Chargers thought Leaf would suck. My question is that why did he mess with it. Did he expect Tatum eventually start being a 1-cut runner? Or, is this what he wanted all along?

So why did he DRAFT a guy like this though.

Well, either he's an idiot, or he's comfortable using a 2nd round pick on a talented change of pace back who may not ever carry the whole load.

because he is so in love with himself and his system that he thinks he can turn water into wine. Why did he draft Clarrett? Why did they trade for Dayne? Why did they trade Portis? Why did they let Droughns go? Shannahan has had so much success running the ball that he literally thinks that anyone (other than Tatum Bell) can do it. My guess is he thought he could mold Tater in the denver image and it never happened.

"...can anyone answer how he scouts talent?"

Easy - the same way he picks a starting RB - dart board.

Next question. :coffee:

Because you can't have enough RB depth. I don't think he cares one bit who starts, as long as they don't fumble and his team wins. It's not like he's drafting a fantasy team or anything.

Because it's possible to teach blocking and cutting. It's impossible to teach speed.Clinton Portis was a dancer, a fumbler, and an indifferent blocker when he came to Denver. Look at him now. If Bell had improved like Portis did, Denver would have another absolute stud on their hands. It was a gamble that worked remarkably once, and had more muted results the second time. Still, I don't think Denver regrets taking Bell. He's done a lot more for Denver than most 2nd round picks do for their teams in their entire careers.
I seriously do not see the Denver running game doing well this year. I just do not.....prove me wrong Shanny, again.
Matt Lepsis, Ben Hamilton, Tom Nalen, Cooper Carlisle, and George Foster still in town? Then Denver will be fine. What often gets lost in the shuffle is that Denver has the highest-paid OL in the entire NFL. It's not like it's just this magical system that works on its own. Denver has serious STUDS. Nalen's the best center in the league and if there's any justice, a sure-fire HoFer. Lepsis is one of the top three LTs in the NFL, and is RIDICULOUSLY underrated (Zimmerman charted every play by the LTs last season and said Lepsis had the best year, ahead of Jones, Ogden, Pace, or any of the bigger names who made the pro bowl while Lepsis sat at home). Hamilton is an elite guard, and Foster/Carlisle aren't exactly scrubs. Plus, if all else fails... since he came to Denver, no coach has called more runs than Shanahan- not even Cowher.
Don't lose faith in me, coach! I'll prove you right! :football: And stop listening to SSOG!
Hey, sorry man. Nothing personal. I did say that you'll put up better numbers over the next 4 years than Lawrence Maroney, and you know how much I like him.Sorry again, and say hi to your mama for me.

Speaking of "mamas", Housh yours? :D You know I will dominate you with my Mandzadeh! :lmao: Anyways, to get back "on topic", I belive in your analysis of the DEN RB situation. While it has not been "perfect", it has been as close to such status as any I have read. :banned:

In that case, Mike Bell is going to be cut within the week. You better trade him to me in a hurry before the bottom drops out on his value. :hophead:

He was wrong!

I think he was probably enamoured with his raw speed. He has hoped to be able to make him a better blocker and get him to hold on to the ball better.

Apparently, he hasn't succeeded in turning him into that all around back that is neccessary to be an every down player, but he still has the speed that it takes to be a game changer.

As long as Bell can turn in his occasional 50 yard sprint around the corner, he is not a wasted draft pick.

I think the way he pushes these guys to improve their games is pretty shrewd coaching. Wasn't it early this year that Tatum was saying stuff like "We all know I'm the man here, and this is my job to lose." ? Shanahan probably figures statements like that are a sign of complacency- something you don't want to hear if you're the coach and you know the guy needs to work on several things. You don't ever want a player to feel as if they have you over a barrel. You'll never get their best effort that way. And if he cries and quits because you make him second string or because you insist that he improves in the areas that he needs to, you saved yourself a lot of time and effort. I still think Tatum is the best back there. He just shouldn't take it for granted.

When he drafted him, he probably thought he could handle the # of carries, but he has learned (and I saw some stats that showed this, but can't remember where), that after his first 10 or 15 carries, his average per carry plummets. So he know believes that he is a good weapon, but can't be overused.
