Why do FFLs have a trade deadline? (1 Viewer)

Any opinions on why FFLs have a trade deadline? Are there leagues that include a trade waiver system (similar to what is used in MLB)?

It's to minimize cheating. When someone realizes they aren't making the playoffs, it's easy to pry away their best players with other incentives.

Understood but the commish should be able to prevent this type of behavior so I still don't truly see the point. I find it especially peculiar (to have a trade deadline) in dynasty leagues...seems dumb to me.

As a commish, I wouldnt wanna deal with any of that BS.

I don't think it should be before the playoffs start. But I do think once they start, trading shouldn't be allowed. I wouldn't want a championship determined by a last second trade that an owner doesn't have to commit to before being locked into the game.

:goodposting: Ours just passed, but I could see a trade deadline extending up until the playoffs in dynasty leagues. In dynasty leagues (during the playoffs - and just prior to them) it encourages teams that are out of the playoffs to get better for the future by using the WW to do so - instead of simply trying to use the WW to block people and dangle vet talent to the highest bidder up until the last possible second. I, for one, think a trade deadline - even in dynasty leagues - is a good thing. It basically stops teams that have been mediocre all year from trying to drastically alter their team right before the playoffs by selling off draft picks/depth guys/youth in an attempt to "steal" the championship. What I mean is, a trade deadline decreases variance and reduces the chances that someone will try to "gamesmanship" their way to a title. It also, as others have mentioned, makes it tougher for collusion or simply "favoritism" to change the playoff landscape as much as if there were no deadline.

I see your point, but how to you relegate what is fair in the final weeks? A bad trade early in the season has 10+ weeks to play out...a bad trade in week 13 could greatly impact what the members of the league have been working for.I once played in a league that did not have a trade deadline, but once you were mathematically eliminated, you could not make a trade (and trades froze in the playoffs). I could live with that again, but I do remember one 1-6 team making a questionable trade so even when you set rules for the betterment of the group there will be loopholes
