Plus they are both incredibly bad head coaches. Both these guys are good+ DCs. "Four-pound-sign" Jauron did a good job here in Cleveland, but was eliminated due to new ownership. Romeo is well respected by his players, but exhibits "Wayne Fontes disease". That is, he doesn't look like most people's mental image of a HC.
Fantastic? I dunno about that, at least because we have a very small sample size to judge him on. He had a middling defense in one year as DC in KC and an AWFUL defense the following year. He was a DC in New England under Belichick for four seasons, two of which were elite (top 5), two of which were not (bottom half of the league). And his one year as Belichick's DC in Cleveland was a train wreck. In seven seasons as an NFL DC, he's had two top 10 finishes, and quite a few bottom half finishes. That's elite?Romeo is a fantastic DC, just a bad HC. Jauron, I dunno.
I suspect it's mostly a risk adverse culture, better the devil you know than take a chance on a new guy.
I agree with you that Rob Ryan hasn't accomplished much (in fact I wrote an article about it last year), but did you know that Rob Ryan (6) has almost as many seasons in the league as a defensive coordinator as Romeo Crennel (7)? People seem to view Crennel as this grizzled coordinator, but he spent a huge portion of his coaching career in special teams and it wasn't until Belichick got the head gig in Cleveland that he got a DC opportunity. Both **** Juron and Romeo Crennell are different but very good guys.Juron has an Ivy League education and he's got a great manner and aura about him. He is a guy I'd hire in a second because I'd want him around and I'd want to work with him. Romeo Crennel has a fantastic personality and players and other coaches absolutely love him. Also he's got a solid track record as a DC, not as a HC.Both are solid DCs and depending on whether or not you want to implement a 4-3 or a 3-4 and also depending upon what sort of guy you feel would be a better fit for your organization you make your pick between the two on that basis. Now if you want to question a guy who simply hasn't done anything as a DC but keeps getting hire take a look no further than Rob Ryan. That is a guy who hasn't done deek with his MANY MANY MANY chances as a DC but he has kept landing on his feet and we sure have heard a lot from him. He's a guy who had more than enough chances and he's done nothing with them and he doesn't have the character of Juron or Crennel IMHO.
The thing about the Belichick/Romeo marriage was it was a pretty fiesty but good mix of widely divergent personalities/minds but it worked really well.I recall a few hot discussions between BB and Romeo during the Pats SB winning years. So I think Romeo is a guy you hire if you feel you have the right mix.Juron is a guy who I think works on any coaching staff. He's known as a renaissance man who knows about many subjects and co-workers respect just about everything about him.Rob Ryan, hmmn. I don't want to rip him but consider his pop, Buddy Ryan, hired certain guys like current Rams HC Jeff Fisher and took him to every place that he coached. Um, Jeff Fisher is the guy who has been keeping his name afloat but it appears he's not going to even hire him as his DC. Bottom line, Ryan gets outcoached more often than he outcoaches the guys he's up against.'Jason Wood said:I agree with you that Rob Ryan hasn't accomplished much (in fact I wrote an article about it last year), but did you know that Rob Ryan (6) has almost as many seasons in the league as a defensive coordinator as Romeo Crennel (7)? Couldn't disagree more. He could never assemble an offense in all his years. Granted he was a great defensive mindbut three playoff appearances in nine years does not cut it. He did have an 81-63 record but making and winning postseason'Sabertooth said:Bull#### Jauron isn't a good head coach. He was coach of the year one year in Chicago and fired the next. I always thought he got a raw deal there. Kind of like Lovie Smith got a raw deal.
