I'm curious as to why do so many people dislike feminism? What has earned feminism such a negative reputation? Where did feminists go wrong? Why has feminism suddenly become so unpopular?

I support feminism even though a lot of feminists tend to be off-putting.

Probably lost interest in women's rights about the 400th time I was reminded of the nonexistent crusade against women in corporate america.

Because it's gone from a legitimate movement seeking to battle inequality to a self-defeating radical identity politics shell game with little substance that preys on the guilt of young college students.

Has feminism "suddenly become so unpopular"? I thought it had been unpopular for a while, and if anything its popularity was now on the rise.

I'm a big fan of feminism; my wife has a rocking job where she makes enough that I was able to quit mine, stay home with our son, and pursue writing. Which is pretty rad, and definitely is not something that would have happened without feminism. Hooray for that. And she's damn good at her job, and her employer is damn lucky to have her, as opposed to 30-40 years ago where she would have been expected to quit when her son was born to stay at home and take care of him. So hooray for that, too.

(I was rubbish at my job, and my former employer is probably better off without me. Really, it was all one big win for society as a whole.)

Most of the major battles were won long ago, but there's still some crap women have to put up with in the workforce. My wife works in a female-dominated field, so she doesn't have to deal with most of them, (although working in healthcare, she's well acquainted with patients directing all questions to her male subordinates rather than to herself). But parental leave in America is kind of a joke, still. Women get penalized by employers for asking for raises more than men do. Women get charged more by car dealerships and repair shops.

Raising my son, we're lucky if a third of the characters in the shows produced for him are female, (most of them tokens and stereotypes). If you're raising a daughter, I'd imagine you'd have to work pretty hard to find positive role models for her in media designed for her consumption, (unless you count princesses as positive role models; if I had a daughter, I'd rather she aspire to something more than "rich, lazy, and catered-to").

Things have come a long way, but it's still easier being a man in America than a woman.

This.

Big fan of Camile Paglia though. But then again, most mainstream feminists don't like her. Mostly because she doesn't subscribe to their orthodoxy and *shocker* thinks for herself.

I instantaneously voted yes because I agree with the idea. The messengers are irrelevant as they do not effect the inherent importance of the message.

God came to Adam, who was alone. God said: I am going to make the perfect companion for you. She will cook and clean and bear your children and never complain. She will have sex with you whenever you want and never complain. She will never nag you or disagree with you.

Adam said: WoW, that sounds great, What to I have to give up?

God: I'll just need your right arm.

Adam: Hmm, that's kind of drastic. What can I get for a rib?

I think this post (including the links) explains it as well as it can be explained. (Especially Part IV, and double especially the links to this article and this one.)

Hey there enlightened one, could you just say if you are for or against feminism?

Thanks

I agree with the author's statement: "I do not identify either as feminist or as anti-feminist. The feminist movement contains far too many viewpoints for me to be able to attach a simple 'I’m for all of these!' or 'I’m against all of these!' to the category as a whole."

We'll put you down as For feminism.

One of my "male feminist" colleagues recently posted an article on Facebook about the orgasm inequity between men and women (i.e., that men always orgasm while women only sometimes orgasm). I assured him that, as a male feminist myself, I was doing my part in closing the orgasm gap between the sexes. Whatever it takes to bring about gender equality.

I think the problem a lot of men have with it is they aren't the ones responsible for the inequality but are made to feel that way. I think in the U.S. the majority of men are fine with equality but the reality is that we aren't there yet.

One thing I feel has happened that is overlooked is that the American feminism movement and American corporations have helped women in other countries. To what degree I don't really know but I do think it's been a net positive beyond our borders.

I don't know what "feminism" is.

If you mean, should women have the same career opportunities as men, get paid the same as men, and be treated with the same respect as men, then yeah of course I support that.

That stuff doesn't seem to be what most self-described feminists have at the front of their minds though. If you were seeking to understand it purely from the stuff people actually talk about, you would think that feminism was a movement devoted to getting other people to pay for one's birth control, which manages to be both ludicrous and trivial.

every male feminist I know is a loser

I don't know what feminism is anymore, but it seems it's mostly now that women have the freedom to sleep around without any of those old pesky consequences (being called a slut or getting and staying pregnant)

Feminism doesn't seem so bad.

Except now there's talk of "pegging", and I assume we can blame that on feminists.

1 out of 3 women are raped or sexually molested at some point in their lives. I have two daughters and don't want to see that happen to them. On the radio, I hear conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Prager scoff at this statistic and imply that a lot of girls are encouraged by feminists to make stuff up. I don't believe that. This issue of rape, among others, is why I am a feminist, I think.

Wait...this is a thing???

I think any guy who has been lucky to have smart funny beautiful women in his life supports feminism. I think it's people who try to define what women must be like some salafist imam who are the problem.

It's 2016 my man, you could be whatever you want. Just never heard that.

I don't understand. You find that funny?

I find it funny that you believe that stat, yes.

What the hell are they #####ing about...they have the ability to sleep their way to the top....most men don't have that ability...You want to talk about unfair.

Could men who don't consider themselves feminist also be against rape?

Could men who are for equal rights and equal pay for equal work based on equal qualifications, experience, and output be for those things and yet not consider themselves feminist?

You're right. Ultimately, it comes down to how each individual man defines feminism. Despite the near-even split vote, I think most guys are for the same things, they just define feminism differently.

Of course. But you can't deny that feminists are the ones who prominently fight for these things.

I've heard 1 out of 5 and 1 out of 4, but this is the first time I have seen the number put at 1 out of 3. Whatever the number it is too high.

I have also heard, though I do not know that it is so, that the greatest risk to any female, whether simple assault, sexual assault, or murder is by the men in her life, fathers, uncles, brothers, husbands, lovers. Whatever the above numbers are, take solace in the fact that they already don't apply to your girls by virtue of the fact that you yourself treat them with respect and love. If they have no brothers their odds are also much improved. If you are a solid role model, which I presume you are, their odds of picking bad lovers and mates also goes down which in turn should greatly increase their odds of not suffering your fears coming true.

Not easy being a father.

Sadly prominence does not equate, necessarily, with effectiveness. At times it can even be counterproductive. There are times when I wonder whether that is at all important to those fighting.

I don't support "feminism" any more than I support "black power" or any other movement.

I support equal rights and equal opportunity for all. With the understanding that many of us start from a position of privilege.

I read a theory once that feminism was bankrolled by big business to get women out of the home and into factory. The influx of workers drove down wages. Makes sense. I only know a few families now with a single bread winner. My wife would love to be a stay at home mother, but alas we simply cannot afford it.
