In FF, if you have 2 players than can help your team, you will generally take the guy who you don't need to trade for. In the NFL, every year a GM will rate two guys about the same and then trade for the one guy rather than just picking up the FA.
Right now you have Minnesota Dangling Culpepper for a 1st or 2nd rounder when you have a bunch of other QBs (Brees, Kitna, Pennington, Mcnair) et al out there. Now, while I agree that Culpepper is better than these guys when healthy, you would be buying a guy that you'd have to give up a good pick for, give him a huge salary, and HOPE he recovers from a shredded knee.
Many teams do this kind of stuff. Miami gave up a second for Jay Feeley. It is a stupid move no matter how you slice it, but still, Billy Volek was available as an UFA at the same time.
The jets went out and traded for Doug Jolley last year, when there were plenty of pass catching TEs in the FA market.
Houston is getting ready to draft reggie bush, when they could trade down, keep DD, and get more help for a talent starved team (they could also trade away DD, but nothing is heating up there either)
and on and on.
Sometimes I feel that anyone who has had a FF team could bring better insight as to what it is worth to keep your picks and get FAs rather than trading big picks, giving big money, and then hoping for the best.
