Why does Bill Belichick hate Mangini? (1 Viewer)

Bottom line, we are still talking about the Jets here. They will figure some way to screw it up.

Joe Willie's deal with the Devil will see to that (insert your favorite Suzy Kolber line in here).

Sorry chump - what goes around comes around!
A Jets fan calling Belichick a chump? Priceless.
He is a chump - just like Parcells was for what he did to NE which was just as bad. So don't think I'm revising history from a Jets point of view. But focusing on Bellichump - he is just as low class as Parcells. He stole $1M of Leon Hess' money and ran out of town in an embarassing napkin written resignation where he couldn't even spell out "Head Coach" or the team he was contracted to coach. He is the definition of scumbag!Mangini went the traditional route - he worked hard and was given an opportunity. He had every right to take that Jet job. There was no blood money in place that he accepted unlike Bellijerk. My point is not to point out that Bellihole is a jerk - history shows the kind of "man" he is - but rather for him to hold a grudge against his protege for taking a legitimate job and acting classless like he has is more evidence of him being the biggest tool of a "HC" ever. What is priceless will be when the circle is complete and Bellidump falls at the sword of his own protege :banned:
That is a lot of hate man.Bellichick is a great coach.Parcells is a great coach.Mangini looks to be headed in the right direction. To call Bellichick a chump is classless and arrogant because you do not know what went on behind closed doors. I think Bellichick did want the jets coaching job because of the weak ownership situation and also he didn't want to be coaching a team with Parcells in the front office looking down on him.
I agree he didn't want Parcells breating down his neck,, but this seemingly accepted idea that the ownership was weak.... where does that come from? just because there was a new onwer? Like Hess was a great owner? He was the guy that hired Kotite for cryin out loud. W Johnson has proven to be a commited owner in it for the long haul. The hiring of Mangini and Tannenbaum proves that out. So does letting Hermie go to KC. Johnson is a solid owner, low profile, which is good, and hands off the football operation. An ideal owner, IMO.
The Jets ownership situation was still in flux when this was going on. No one knew what type owner Johnson was going to be.

Classless and arrogant? Wrong guy - that is on BB. As a jet fan - there was an entire future invested in this guy which he was compensated for to the tune of $1M which he greedily took without reservation - that is a fact. When it came time for him to make good on his collection of the money and be "HC of the NYJ" - he turned tail and ran to NE and daddy Kraft - fact. He took money from my team and screwed them which indirectly comes from my obscene ticket prices - then ran to our rival taking any good coach with him. Jet fans then had to endure years of Al Groh and Sermon Edwards. All factsHe didn't like the ownership and Parcells situation - then don't take the money and sign on the dotted line! I'm sure most Jet fans despise BB just as NE fans have the right to despise Parcells. I wouldn't call a NE fan classless for hating Parcells for what he did to them during their SB week - I have earned the right to hate on that piece of crap. He's a great coach - so what?

My take:Belichick was set to take over as head coach of the Jets once Parcells stepped aside into a front office position. It was in his contract that he would do so.When Parcells was coaching the Jets, the Patriots had interest in bringing in Belichick as head coach to replace Pete Carroll. Parcells knew this. Parcells had an ongoing personal feud with Bob Kraft, owner of the Patriots, going back to Parcells' days as New England's head coach, when Kraft overruled Parcells and drafted Terry Glenn in the 1st round (this is where Parcells' infamous "shop for the groceries" line came from). It is believed that Parcells was going to coach the Jets for one more season, but decided to take the front office job (making Belichick the Jets coach) one year earlier, just so the Pats couldn't hire Belichick.Belichick saw this as unprofessional. In addition, it essentially took away Belichick's ability to choose between the Jets and the Patriots (since it was written into his contract with the Jets that he would take over once Parcells stepped aside). This is what led to Belichick's infamous "I resign as HC of the NYJ" resignation, and this is why the Pats ended up having to give the Jets compensation for hiring Belichick.Obviously, this left a sour taste in Belichick's mouth for the Jets. When Romeo Crennel left New England, Eric Mangini was named his successor as defensive coordinator. Some people thought Mangini might be a little too young for the position, but Belichick had faith in Mangini and went with him. Mangini took off after only one season to go to the organization that his mentor felt betrayed by a few years previous.Belichick advised Mangini that the Jets might not be the best organization to go to for his first head coach job (big market, and I believe there may have been ownership issues?), and that he might want to stick around and get a little more experience as a coordinator before he took any head coaching position at all.I'm not saying that is justification, or that Belichick is 100% right here, or even offering an opinion either way. But it's not like he has no reason at all to be a little bitter.
I hope there's more to it than this. Because even coming from a Belichick apologist, he still comes off as a goof.

Belichick is an Equal Opportunity hater. He hates everybody not involved in the Patriots organisation equally.

I mean, that's not true at all. If you watched his press conferences week in and week out, which you obviously don't, you would see that there's an obvious difference with the way he talks about a given week's head coach (with respect, good coach, lip service, etc) with the way he talks about Mangini (he doesn't acknowledge he exists).

I didn't catch the game. I'm assuming there wasn't the traditional postgame handshake, wave, nod, etc. between the two?
Belichick again averted his eyes, and said nothing. Mangini did say at least a sentence, but what he said was impossible to lip read. It was another dead fish handshake from Bellichick. I have to give Mangini a lot of credit for how he has handled the cold shoulder, taking the high road. I think that Mangini would like to make the friendship repairable, but Belichick obviously has no interest in that at this point. He really comes off as a fool in this whole situation from where I sit, but obviously don't know all the details.... only Mangini and Belichick know that.PS: Belichick has spoken glowingly about some Jets coaches, like Westoff, and still does. He treats Mangini as a non-entity.

 Discussing the question posed by the OP = sqirming in our shorts?Nice game by Mangini and the Jets. But we'll keep Belichick, thanks.

I'm a Jets fan and I will say this -- Belichick has done alot with not much. Which is not to say that the pats have no talent or have over-achieved - but he is able to take a team that isn't a home run (no big time WR, no big time RB - mostly, solid but unspectacular D) and manage it to be greater then the sum of it's parts.I think many other coaches would have failed miserably in NE. Belichick is solid and whether he's a nice guy is irrelevent to me. He wins alot. And given the team he's had in the past, it's impressive. One can only hope Mangini is in the same mold and it appears he is so far.

Johnny Damon leaves the Sox for more money from the Yankees and helps them to another AL East title. Think Johnny and Theo have lots to say to each other when they meet?

There'll be lots of speculation and we'll probably never know the entire truth (recruiting players etc.), but what I know is this...

Mangini left the Patriots after 1 year as DC. One year after Belichick rewarded him with a promotion. To go coach the Jets. The AFC East division rival Jets. Not Notre Dame, not Cleveland; NYJ.

I'd be pissed too. F Eric Mangina.

He's fishing, Borat.

Funny thread. Belichick took Parcell's entire coaching staff with him, but sees no problem with that. Now, UNSUBSTANTIATED rumors that Mangini was recruiting Pats players BEFORE he got the Jets job makes him some sort of low life? Mangini going to the Jets at least was on the up and up.... it wasn't the shady departure Belichick orchestrated when he left NY.

I think it's pretty simple. Belichick taught Mangini how to coach, and figured he'd reap the benefits at least for several years. He has always hated the Jets organization,, and feels betrayed by a young guy he took under his wing. Like an 18 year old daughter who maries a guy her father doesn't approve of, Belichick won't go to the wedding. It's as simple as that. It also burns him that the Jets aren't the awful franchise to work for as Belichick claimed it was. That gets him pissed too. In short, Belichick is a jerk.
What a load of nonsense. Of course Belichick took coaches from the Jets to the Patriots - why wouldn't he? Parcells wasn't sticking around. There was no head coach left to be loyal to. Why would they stick around for Al Groh's new regime? If Parcells had remained the head coach, you'd have a point. But he didn't, so you don't.

As for "unsubstantiated rumors," I think you need a lesson in logic. They are unsubstantiated to us, the fans. That doesn't mean that Belichick doesn't know the truth behind what happened.

In short, you're making a fool of yourself by calling Belichick a jerk for the weak reasons you've listed.

Borat, I'm not saying you're wrong -- but you're making the same assumptions Rovers is. You seem to be saying 'well we - the fans - don't know for sure but it's true'. In the sentence I italicised, you're saying that (or appear to) while we can't know what Mangini did, YOU do by virtue of the fact that Bilichick dislikes Mangini, so the rumors must have been true. And you don't. Nobody does for sure. We can guess - but that's all it is.

Hence 'unsubstanciated'.

You don't know any more than Rovers.

Just sayin.....

You are right, I didn't mean for it to come out like that, but I shouldn't have used the word "truth" there. My point was that you can't assume unsubtantiated rumors are true. But you are correct, you cannot assume that they are not true, either.

Regardless of how Belichick sees it, it really makes him come off as an idiot.Young assistant coaches are using their position as a springboard to become a head coach. Belichick did it, as well. So what, it happens that the opportunity came up for Mangini on a division rival.Did Belichick really expect Mangini to remain a coordinator when a head coach position opened up for him?Bill looks bitter and childish in this instance. The loss must have made him want to choke Mangini. :D It's good, though. Belichick needs a little humility.
As a Jets fan, I don't think there was a more satisfying win for me in the last 4 years than Sunday's victory in Foxboro. Belichick ran off that field like a scalded dog. How freakin' sweet.

And that's the nature of this -- I think, and just my opinion here, it's a little childish to be so angry over Mangini pursuing the Jets opportunity as soon as he saw it. Like a spurned girlfriend. Not speaking his name? Come on, Bill. You're a grown up.But we're all human - and sometimes get angry over stuff that in the grand scheme of things isn't THAT big a deal. Maybe one day they'll get together and sing kumbayah.

Until then, I think it's a great little rivalry, and this just adds flavor to it.

Congrats.

Bellichick inherited a pretty decent team with the Pats... Not to take anything away from him.
I strongly disagree with this. The Patriots were 5-11 in Belichick's first year with the Patriots, and even in 2001 (Belichick's second year) when they won the Super Bowl, Joel Buchsbaum called them the least talented team in the entire league before the season started.
they became much more talented when Mo lewis leveled Bledsoe, putting him on the sidelines and opening the door for Brady

mort just said it was because mangini went after deion branch. that's kind of pathetic if it's that. belichek should blame himself and his own organization for that.

I agree. And if the Jets did jack up Branch's price just to weaken the Patriots, their biggest division rival, that is smart business! Belichick is just pissed that it worked, and the Patriots are weaker because of it.

Ah yes, division rivals, big egos, hurt feelings, blah, blah, blah. Who really cares?
I kind of care. Only because Belichick, particularly last year, has been all but deified by the media. The Halberstam book came out, everyone focused on his relationship with his father, on how he was the antidote to the "egotism" of the modern professional athlete. Hell, even his divorce was portrayed as one of those "poor Bill is just too driven by the game" type of things. Then it turns out he had a years long affair with some chick in the Giants organization. And now his conception of team loyalty starts to look a lot like a sort of entitlement complex.I'll never say anything bad about the guy as a coach. He knows the game. And many of his unsentimental decisions were probably the right ones. But I think far too much has been made of that to the point where the guy seems to almost take pride in showing he can let key members of the team go and win without them. I think there is a degree of egotism there. No biggie, just about every good coach has a little healthy bit of the ####### in him, and it's not as if Belichick didn't learn that from the king.

Well it's good to know that if I ever want to know what Belichick is thinking, I can just come to the Shark Pool and ask everyone.

I'm making MYSELF look foolish? No, that is what Belichick is doing. Like I said, neither you nor I know what exactly went down. That was my point, and your response reeks of homerism. What Belichick has done has in fact made him look like a whimpy sore loser. Now, Belichick has never gone out of his way to make anyone happy, especially the press, the Boston press in particular, but he does come off looking like a real jerk. I'm sure he doesn't care. He has the rings to suppost him, and he's a genius HC, so he gets away with it, but only to an extent.

Again, and I repeat, because you seem a wee bit slow on this concept.... only those two HC's know what went down. We as fans are left to make judgements based on what we SEE, not unsubstantiated rumors. Parcells screwed the Pats, Belichick screwed the Jets. That is as plain as Jimmy Durante's nose. Chill with the personal insults.... that never leads to a civil debate. Let's keep the discussion on the people invilved, Belichick and Mangini, less I say something else that would be inflamatory and not condusive to the discussion. Thank you.

Not fishing at all - don't need to split hairs - if he's not a chump by your deinition then I'll go with scumbag! Please see my prior posts for the multiple reasons.

Congrats to the Jets and Mangini for a great win. Hopefully, Mangini can help the Jets turn the corner towards becoming a competitive franchise.

Sure is a lot of homerism in this thread. That's cool. I think we're supposed to hate each other.

:football:

Too bad the Pats couldn't hire a great guy to coach them. A guy like Pete Carroll would be great. He'd talk to the media, pat everyone on the back and be onboard as management gave out big contracts left and right. Oh wait, they already tried that...

Whatever is going on between Mangini and BB is between them. Only they know what's happening and it's between them. They coach rival teams and there's no need for them to be buddy buddy. That's not what they are being paid for. I'm sure Jet fans want to see BB fail. He didn't want to coach them due to an iffy ownership situation and they've had to watch him own them the past four years while winning titles they haven't seen since the late 60's. It would make sense that there's a serious dislike for him. As for Patriot fans they dislike all things New York. I'm sure many find it funny that Jet fans seem all up and arms about BB when they're the team that was was tampering with the Tuna while he was supposed to be getting his team ready for the Super Bowl.

BB only cares about one thing. Winning football games. Everything else is secondary. Does that mean he can come off as a ##### sometimes? Absolutely. Yet, at the end of the day it's that attitude that keeps the Patriot franchise chugging along as contenders on a yearly basis and that's all Patriot fans care about.

It is what it is said:

Agreed.This is called Karma Kramer.

Belichick took many staff members from Parcells staff, when Parcells stepped down, specifically so Belichick could take the Jets job. Then Belichick bolts to New England as a slap in the face to Parcells, and does this despite (or in spite, for better words) the well documented troubles between his former boss Parcells (with owner Kraft) and New England. Belichick then recruits staff members from the Parcells (who was the Jets GM at the time)-Groh Jets team...and Parcells allows this without a negative word said on the subject.
Belichick has had ties to New England his entire life. Isn't it possible that he wanted to make the move to New England, and that spiting Parcells had nothing to do with it?
Belichick then goes on an extended period of a non speaking with Parcells...much in the same childish way Belichick is now doing with Eric Mangini.

The only difference here is that now the tables are reversed...as in it's Mangini, not Belichick, who is now doing the taking from his former boss.

NFL karma at it's finest... :D
Belichick and Parcells weren't talking to each other. Why is it automatically Belichick's fault that they weren't speaking?

We as fans are left to make judgements based on what we SEE, not unsubstantiated rumors. Parcells screwed the Pats, Belichick screwed the Jets. That is as plain as Jimmy Durante's nose. Chill with the personal insults.... that never leads to a civil debate. Let's keep the discussion on the people invilved, Belichick and Mangini, less I say something else that would be inflamatory and not condusive to the discussion. Thank you.
You say that my responses reek of homerism, but I can make the same accusation right back at you. There are two sides to this story. And please stop saying that I am "a wee bit slow" on the concept that only these two HCs know what went down. I've already stated that fact in this thread, probably more than once.

mort just said it was because mangini went after deion branch. that's kind of pathetic if it's that. belichek should blame himself and his own organization for that.
I agree. And if the Jets did jack up Branch's price just to weaken the Patriots, their biggest division rival, that is smart business! Belichick is just pissed that it worked, and the Patriots are weaker because of it.
It is definitely good, intelligent business on Mangini's part, if that's what it's all about. But how would Mort know? Seems like speculation on his part, just like we're all speculating. Just one more unsubstantiated rumor to throw into this discussion.

OK,, Sorry.... you are very slow. :football: :P

I'll just put down my main point right here once again, for clarification purposes:

We don't know why Belichick seems to have a problem with Mangini. There are several theories, but only Belichick and Mangini know for sure. Let's not assume that Belichick has a good reason to act like this. But let's also not assume that he doesn't have a good reason to act this.

That is all. That's my point. I'm not saying that Belichick is right to do what he's doing, because I don't know the facts behind the situation. Just like you Jets fans can't legitimately claim that Belichick is just being a jerk for no good reason. No one knows the facts here, except Belichick, Mangini, and maybe a select few within their respective inner circles. So let's not pass judgement.

Good win for Mangini, the Jets, and their fans. We're happy to see you guys once again pulling your weight in what had previously been a pretty solid rivalry. Hopefully we can look forward to many great matchups between the teacher and his student for years to come.
