Why does Tom Coughlin get so little mention? (1 Viewer)

Whenever you see talk about the best coaches in the NFL, of course you hear about Belichick, and then other SB-winning coaches like Payton, Shanahan and Tomlin get mention, but Coughlin is often left out. In fact, I often see guys like Reid, Fisher and Ryan get mentioned a lot more than Coughlin, which makes little sense to me. Coughlin, unlike those guys, has won a Super Bowl, and has a lifetime winning percentage of .554, which is pretty darn good. I suspect him coming across a disciplinarian who gives boring interviews is a big reason why he doesn't get as much ink or props as other guys, but I think the guy is easily a top NFL coach. Agree? Disagree?

I had my complaints and concerns about him....then they won the superbowl. They were way down on him at the beginning of the year since the Giants were looking very undisciplined. He managed to turn that around. Not sure why he doesn't get more positive press, the media and fans can have a short memory. As a Giants fan, I am very happy with him

A few years ago, people were saying he'd lost control of his team, he was too much of a disciplinarian, not imaginative enough, etc. Besides, he looks like a grade school principal who is about to retire.

Amazing what some big wins will do for your reputation.

i disagree. he is a micro-manager and sets ridiculous expectations of his players with regards to trivial matters. much of the credit of the Giants success is due to player personel. i'll give it up to ernie accorsi and jerry reese, but not coughlin.

you may not agree with his style, but the results are hard to ignore.he is a helluva coach.

People were saying this a few weeks ago, as well.

Very good since he started with an expansion team. Coughlin has adapted, Nicks said that the team really likes Coughlin and that he is very passionate.

It is tough to keep control of any team when you have guys like Burris and Barber back-stabbing you. Once the cancers were gone the ship is sailing smoother.

I wonder if he's loosened up on this (don't ready much about it in the press...maybe winning helps)? Or I wonder if he now has players buying into his system? The stories I recall were about him saying that being on time for meetings means being 5 minutes early and he fined players if they weren't five minutes early (is that correct or is my memory fading)?I do think playing games like that is a bit over the top but I actually respect the principle of having discipline in an organization.

Giants fans are always on the verge of running him out of town right before he goes on a winning streak.

His " If you are not 5 minutes early you are late" did not help him. That being said, he has listened to his players about issues and that has been underplayed in the media. He has great assistants as well.

Bottom Line: He does not have that infectious personality that draws the media to him. As a result, yes, I think he is underrated.

That's silly. GMs can amass all the talent in the world but if you don't have good coaching you aren't going to see much return on the investment.Witness Wade Philips. I guarantee you that Tom Coughlin would do far more with the Cowboys roster than Philips ever has or will.

Micro-managing and being detail-oriented to death is what gets a team to make less mistakes, especially mental errors. And all of that talent doesn't do a lot of good without good coaching. The 2010 Vikings, Cowboys and Chargers are all prime examples of what kind happen with a team with very good to great player personnel and average to poor coaching.

the comparisons with the 2010 chargers and cowboys is exactly right. those coaches, norv turner and wade phillips, are bad coaches. a mediocre to good coach, like coughlin, would have those teams in the playoffs often and maybe eke out a super bowl victory every 20 years or so. if you want to be considered the best coaches or even a great coach, you need to get more out of your personel than merely reducing mental errors. i don't see the greatness in him, myself.

a good coach? OK, i'll give you that. but he is not underrated because he is not a great coach.

The funny thing about that time rule was that after the first few weeks Plaxico was the only guiy on the team who was ever late. Players get used to rules. Coughlin stated he had that rule because the meeting starts at the given time..you don`t need players shuffling in 1-2 minutes late. Five minutes gives you a cushion. Years ago I had a boss who was the same way but even worse..If I had to be at a meeting at 3:00 I would get there at 2:45 as did everybody else because we knew his style, it is not that difficult. The guy always said the meeting starts at 3:00..do not arrive at 3:00.

Do you rate Reid and Fisher above him?

 This. As I was watching MNF I turned to my buddy and told him that if you switch Coughlin and Wade on the sidelines, the Cowboys are winning this game. Who knows what Dallas' record could be with Coughlin. It's the difference between discipline and disorder. In regards to Phillips I don't think I've seen a coach look so helpless and out of control on the sidelines.

yes and yes.reid has done better (imo) than coughlin with similar talent. fisher has accomplished less but with far less talent and a sweet mustache.

You made me laugh out loud. Well played, sir.

I can see Reid because of greater consistency, though the Super Bowl is a pretty big trump card. I don't know about Fisher.Regular Season Records W L T %Reid 112 70 1 0.615Fisher 141 112 0 0.557Coughlin 128 103 0 0.554Playoff Records Wins Losses % Reid 10 8 0.556 Fisher 5 6 0.455 Coughlin 8 7 0.533 Winning Seasons Playoff Appearances Total Seasons Reid 8 8 11 Fisher 6 6 15 Coughlin 7 8 14 Conference Championship records W LReid 1 4Fisher 1 0Coughlin 1 2

Look at Coughlin's record with the Giants. Although he did a respectable job with Jax, it was an expansion team and to compare those teams to the oilers/titans and eagles, is unfair.

Guy is a great coach.
