Why Is Dan Rather In My Facebook Feed Fighting Fake News When He Got Fired For Actively Manufacturing Fake News? (1 Viewer)

He reported a true story inaccurately, which is the difference:

Dan Rather Defends the News Report That Got Him Fired: 'We Didn't Do It Perfectly,' But 'We Reported a True Story'

Dan Rather still stands by the CBS News report that got him fired, nearly a decade and one feature film later.

The former anchor’s reputation was tarnished after the accuracy of his 2004 story questioning President George W. Bush‘s military service was publicly disputed by the leader’s administration. The entire saga was recently dramatized on the big screen in Truth, starring Robert Redford as Rather.

“We reported a true story. We didn’t do it perfectly,” the 84-year-old recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “We made some mistakes of getting to the truth. But that didn’t change the truth of what we reported.”

Rather and his producer Mary Mapes (played by Cate Blanchett in Truth) aired a story that alleged that Bush went AWOL during his time in the Texas Air National Guard. The Bush administration charged that the documents used as the basis for the report were inauthentic, leading to an independent investigation that ultimately concluded that the piece disregarded “fundamental journalistic principles.” The documents were not, however, ever proved to be forgeries.

WTF?  If he reported a story inaccurately then THAT IS FAKE NEWS!

OMG the hoops people go thru to defend atrocious behavior.

No because the story he reported has never been proven to be false. As noted, the documents have never been proven to be forgeries.

Dan Rather earned more respect from more people over the entire course of his career than most of us could ever hope to.

The man forged documents. He got fired.

What is squistion talking about? The letter dropped in the typewriter, and they caught him forging docs.

Huh?

What's that saying about trust?  Trust takes years to build, seconds to break and forever to repair - or something like that.

He didn't forge anything.  He received documents that seemed to back up a narrative that wasn't exactly a secret.  He reported on it.

He pushed forgeries and actively promoted them. Are you going to hang your hat on this? We can argue the logistics all you want. He ran with forged, and I believe actively sought out forged documents or was so reckless AS TO BE FIRED FROM HIS JOB AS ANCHORMAN AT CBS.

You're looking at what was said.  You're not looking into his heart.  You're not looking at what he was feeling.

What do you mean soon?  Alternative Facts have been around for at least the last 8 years.
Alternative Facts have been around for as long as propaganda, but let's just say they seem to be the new norm for the last few days. Some things can't be argued, the inauguration crowd is the easiest thing to point to at the moment. Holy hell, how anybody can say they're proud to put Trump in power with his cronies. Ok, enjoy the ride...we reap what we sew.

They have. You just never read about it. Apparently the hard hitting journalists at people.com missed it as well.

It's strange to see conservatives attacking Dan Rather, since he is the spiritual grandfather of Breitbart and Infowars.

Sure, but he unequivocally sold as fact a rumor that continues to this day to be completely politically biased and debunked.

But I get it. Some fake news is ok.

Some people think it's fair to judge others as if the only thing they ever did was their worst mistake.  Some people don't.

Here's the thing: I don't know whether he did or did not do exactly what you're accusing him of. Obviously he did something very wrong, because he was fired for it.

But to answer your question: either his opinion on this issue (fake news) has merit or it doesn't. Nothing he did in the past has any bearing on whether or not his statements are accurate now.

I am weary of these charges of hypocrisy all the time. It doesn't ever justify current behavior by somebody else, so why do we keep going back to it?

That's not actually necessarily true.

If I report that Betty white is a 92-year old actress who has been working in the business for over 70 years, that's a true story reported inaccurately - she's 95 and has been in the business for over 75 years.

If I report that she's a Russian spy who was once paid by Donald Trump to pee on him, that would be a fake news story.

If I report that there are documents suggesting that she was Mayor of Hollywood in the 1950s... we have a gray area.  She was honorarily titled Mayor of Hollywood then because of her accomplishments, but the real story doesn't come through in the telling.  So I think that's sort of where the Rather story sits.

I get the complaints lamented by tim and Bruce, but you'd think somebody who was so publicly fired for fake news would be a little more circumspect about calling people out for it.

The Rather story sits in the ashheap of history where he gets fired for forging news, actually, Henry.  No matter how people are reporting it now, that's how it went down.

No, that's not really how it actually went down.  He received documents from a dubious source, failed to properly vet them, investigated claims within the documents, though less vigorously than he should have, but the Department failed to reasonably investigate the documents themselves, which may well have been forgeries, and it ended with him voluntarily resigning from that job and becoming a correspondent on 60 minutes.

Dan Rather lost his anchor position for fake news. No gentle way to put it even describes what happened. CBS does not get rid of its anchor unless the typewriter he owns drops a letter and he gets caught in the act.

The official position is brilliant. What a golden parachute. I'm entitled to facts when facts are ...

bull####.

It concerns me when someone shouts that inaccuracies are fake news and states that someone was fired when he resigned and took an inferior position with the same network. I'm sure you understand.

Let's talk about those possibly-forged documents.  The main thrust was that he was ordered to take a physical in 1972 and did not, raising the question of whether he went AWOL.

It is unquestionable that he did not take his 1972 physical and as a result lost his flight status.

That's why I say it's a gray area.

I understand. Anchors of network news get fired everyday. So did Brian Williams.

I don't think this is the cross you want to hang facts on, Henry. I don't think you're doing yourself any good.
