Why is Football Only 5 Months Per Year? (1 Viewer)

Is there anybody that would be against NFL football being 8 months per year rather than 5 months per year?

If the XFL had started in May instead of February, there'd probably be at least a small chance at that.

Although the media slamming that accompanied it (to appease the monster NFL?) certainly didn't help it, the XFL wasn't bad for what it is as long as people didn't expect NFL-caliber play.

No way the players could handle it on their bodies.
How about shortening the regular NFL season back down to 12 games?Let it run from October week 1 - January week 1. Playoffs and Superbowl at end of January.

Then, second football league starts up in April week 1 - July week 1. Playoffs and Superboal at end of July.

Months of rest between league games = minimum 8 weeks.

Plenty of recovery time.

you obviously don't play football.
i wish, i wish, i hadn't squish that fish.I would love to see football run a longer season, but you're right it's physically impossible.

It wouldn't be hard to make the schedule twice as long and have teams play every other week. Small injuries would actually have a better chance to heal rather than get aggrivated. Instead of 10-12 games on Sunday you have 5 or 6. You just have to wait an extra week to see your team play.

Never happen. It would oversaturate the market with football. The NFL knows what it's doing, and it knows that we're dying to get more football. Why do you think football is more popular than baseball? Baseball's on all the time. Football - they leave you wanting more. And yes, I'm ready for the season to start!

Not saying it would happen either, just saying they could do this -- as a response to people who are saying that the players wouldn't be able to survive more games in a season.

I thought the "off-season" was only that short period between the Super Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine?!

There's 8 divisions, 32 teams and 16 regular season games. One thing I've thought would be nice would be to extend the NFL season to 18 weeks (instead of 17), then giving every team a bye week in the first half of the season (1 week off in Weeks 1-9) and another bye week in the second half of the season (1 week off in Weeks 10-18).

The only problem with that is teams will cry foul if their playoff opponents will have their byes coming in Weeks 17 or 18.....getting to rest-up and/or game-plan for an extra week while the other team needs to be on the field. However, I have to believe that adding an 18th week to the regular season, without adding any more games, would mean HUGE $$$ for the league via its television contracts. That, and it is one less week that fans of the league would have to go without football. :football:

Sorry you're sitting at home bored and have nothing better to do. The players may PLAY about 5 months/year, but they are practicing, lifting weights, etc. to get set for the next season just about 12 months/year. It would be ridiculous to ask players to play some 8 months/year. No one's body would stand up to that. RBs especially would last like 3-4 years at most, and you'd see every team with RBBC, with 2-3 RBs getting significant playing time every year. It would be a very very different NFL...I like it the way it is...

I never said the players' bodies could handle playing one game per week for 8 months a year.

There are several things that could be done, whether realistic or not, some of which were mentioned here

1. Spread out NFL season by a few more weeks without adding the number of games (increase the number of bye weeks)

2. Move college football a little earlier/later and the NFL season later/earlier. It might be more difficult to move college football by a few weeks because of the school semester, but the season could be in the spring rather than the fall (Feb-May). There would be more bad weather days in February than in December, but football can be played anyway. This would be a little drastic, but let's say college football season should remain Sept-Dec, that does not prevent the NFL from moving their season a few weeks earlier or later.

3. Add a 2-week "final four" in college football.

4. Improve the availability on TV of other football leagues in the U.S.. Some have already expressed an interest for the CFL, especially with Ricky playing. NFLE?

I don't see any of this happening any time soon, but it would increase football-viewing time :nerd:

It's special because it is so short. I love baseball, but the season is so long I don't pay attention to every single game. I never miss a NFL Sunday, or Monday Night game. It's quality, not quantity.

The good news is the season is almost here ! Less than 2 mos away now, that should fly by. Looking forward to training camps starting up, lots of questions this year and waiting to see what happens so I can get my rankings solidified. Glad the NFL season isn't longer, the other sports are too long IMO. I know once NFL kicks off, I tend to lose interest in baseball. Have a hard time even watching the baseball playoffs as I am about burned out on it by October.

:goodposting: I've always loved baseball, but it's soooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooOOoOo long that some of us tune it out until you get closer to the playoffs...

If anyone other than Vince Mcmahon owned the XFL it may have stood a chance. ESPN & the sportscasters on the networks were making a mockery of it before it even started.
